TRAINING OF HYDROLOGISTS ABROAD by Dr. W. Lászlóffy and Dr. K. Szesztay (For the Hungarian text see pp. 571) There is no training for hydrologists in Hungary at present neither on medium nor on high scale. In order to obtain the best solution corresponding to the conditions of Hungary, the authors discuss the training system for hydrologists in the USSR and review thereafter in brief the state of affairs in Poland, England Roumania and in the United States of America based partly on their study tour records and partly on literature. High-degree hydrologist training in the USSR is ensured by two high schools for liydrometeorology and the geographical chairs of the universities. The curriculum of studies extending to 11 semesters (Table I) affords four years of theoretical (school) erudition, the fifth year being spent in practical work, whereas in the last semester students are required to prepare their diploma work. As an example the program of the subject ,,Runoff and hydrological computations" is given more detailedly in the study. Medium-degree training of hydrologists is ensured by the hydrological section of five hydrometeorological technical schools. The time of study for students having passed secondary school final examination is 2 years 10 months (Table II), whereas for those from public schools is 4 years. For the details of training, the program of "Hydrometry" affords information. The training of observers is provided for by the individual hydrometeorological directorates by means of boarding school-type courses of 3—-10 months duration . Students in Poland, within the frames of hydraulic engineering curriculum extending to 10 semesters, may specialize in the last two semesters, among others, in the field of water conservancy and hydrology. In England a one-year hydrologist postgraduate course is being organized since 1955 for certified engineers and experts in natural sciences. Hydrologist training in the USA takes place at the universities, being included in the curriculum. (Authors' summary translated by Dr. B. Konkoly, tech. translator).
