EFFECT ON TOWN WATER SUPPLY AND ON SEWERS I. Holló (Figures and pictures on pp. 64—77. of Hungarian text) UDC. 628.1+628.2:627.51 The Danube flood put town and industrial water works and sewers to a heavy test. There was no appreciable downtime for power failure. Győr waterworks got into the tightest situation. The city receives 80% of its water supply from wells in the suburb of Révfalu, inundated because of burst of levees (Fig. 1.). With the aid of gasoline engine driven pumps located on top of the collecting pit and by chlorination of the water, supply could be partially secured (Pictures 1 — 3), and the city was supplied with water also with help of the smaller water works and of waterworks of the industry. Experience gathered here and at other town water works and sewers (Pictures 4 — 9) leads to the following recommendations to prevent such difficulties in future : 1. Design and construction of waterworks and sewers : a) In,, the design of works (especially of pits) buoyancy has to be taken more care of. Discharge pipes of wells have to be fitted with as many valves as will permit individual starting and shutting down each pumping unit. b) Bank protection works at sewer discharges, and floor level of waterworks jn the inundation area have to be raised above highest flood stage. c) Every pumping plant has to be provided with 100% standby gasoline engine units and with emergency lighting. d) Levees subjected to unilateral water pressure have to be examined whether it is not more expedient to let exceptionally high floods flow behind them and relieve them from excess pressure. e) Watertightness of walls and of line junctions, if designed as such, is to be examined severely at the acceptance test. 2. Operation of waterworks and sewers : Sewer discharges and sluices have to be kept clear of mud deposits. Chlorination or disinfecting equipment, buckets, hand and gasoline pumps have to be kept in stock. Facilities of mutual aid and of cooperation with industrial water works have to be provided. 3. Organization : Every plant has to work out a detailed flood protection plan and organize flood protection service. 1.).
