35 In designing, general considerations, and in execution, details come into prominence. For both kinds of work important points are : thorough knowledge of the existing milieu, safety, and economy. In the field of hydraulic structures, the extent of the milieu to be known does not always stand in apparent proportion to the dimensions of the work ; thus, for instance, it often occurs that a wide study of a large watershed is needed for the design of a work of small dimensions. When designing a hydraulic structure, the question of safety cannot be settled by multiplying by a simple coefficient, but by thoughtful deliberation ; and in the matter of economy, importance must be attached to the estimates of maintenance as well as to the costs of production. The field was established in 1930, and covers 28 hectares. Irrigation water is obtained for part of the field by backing up the water of a surface drainage canal in the vicinity. Parts of the field situated at a higher elevation are provided with water by a mobile pump of 150 litres per second. The field has been divided in such a way as to be submerged by a water layer of 25 cm as a maximum, and the overflow should be completed within 24 hours. Prompt drainage has also been provided for. The amount of water required is 3050 millimetres during a growth time of 131 days, which equals a water jet of 2-7 litres per second per hectare. The costs of construction (earth work, sluices) amounted to 78 pengő, and that of production 105 pengő per hectare. In the last four years the yield in the dif3*
