Those animals showed a definetely progressed fusion of epiphyses, that Is the fusion of those in metapodii and phalangi happened at an earlier stage of life than in the specimens from Karelia, Soviet Union (see Table 4). The early fusion resulted in metapodii shorter, broader and thicker (IREGREN 1975) in the Swedish elk than in elk in Karelia. A difference in the development of dentition could also observed between the Swedish elk (MARKGREN 1964) and Karelian as well as Volga-Kama specimens (HEPTNER & NASIMOVITSCH 1967). That Is, the milk dentition of the Swedish specimens changed earlier and permanent teeth erupted and reached their final row and height sooner than In the ones in Eastern Europe. We could infer from the osteometrlcal data of the Zoo specimens that they had narrower and dorsoventrally thinner metapodii, than those of free-living animals (see CHAIX & DESSE 1981 and Table 4).
