Specimens. - A 2-yr old male, skin made into a rug with skull Included in the possession of the hunter, Mihály hill, Zebegény, 16 April, 1983. Coll.: L. CSOBÄK. There Is no doubt that this subadult animal migrated southwards from the known range of the brown bear in Czechoslovakia, where in 1977 there were 469 individuals (SABADGS& SIMIAK 1981). The nearest known population of bears lives about 100 km north of the Hungarian locality, In the Jávoros mountains (RADNIK 1970). The animal had been in the area for some days before being shot by the game-keeper. It was observed feeding on the carcass of a mouflon, but It could not be ascertained whether the bear killed It himself or found It as a carrion. One of the excuses brought up to justify the shooting was that it was clearly harmful to game management and since it fed on meat it would be "obsessed by this passion" and become a so-called blood-bear dangerous to people. During the summer of 1983 several brown bears were reportedly seen In the northern part of the Börzsöny Mts (Z. HOMONNAY pers. comm.). Bears can peacefully coexist with man, e.g. examples are from Italy and France (SMITH & VAN WIJNGAARDEN 1981), but of course there are fatal incidences with re-introduced bears, e.g. in Poland (BUCHALCZYK 1980). Brown bears had been maintained In a hunting reserve in the Aggtelek Karst Region In northern Hungary before World War II. They were fed with horses from slaughter-houses. Lynx ( Fells lynx L.) Specimens. - HNHM reg. no. 84.1.1., o*, skull (skin In the possession of the collector), Háromhuta, Zemplén Mts, 1 May, 1981. Coll.: A. FARKAS. This Is the first specimen of lynx In Hungary since 1915 when one was seen in the Pills Mts (HEGYALJAI 1915). KRATOCHVIL (1968a) indicated the occurrence of the lynx in northern Hungary in his maps of the recent distribution of this large-sized cat in Europe, though In another paper in PLATE I.
