tal distance being greater than diameter of eye, preorbital distance being about 2.5 times diameter of eye /1.4 in beliny l/,barbel longer; caudal peduncle lower and wider; spots on sides of body large and dark, annulate beyond dorsal fin. The establishing of the correct name of the species caused grave difficulties. I deem it advisable therefore to submit, in a historical order, a short recapitulation of the relevant descriptions, then my own examinations aiming at the settling of the problem. VLADYKOV /14/ was the first to inform in 1931,us on this species,as s hybrid of Goblo goblo carpathicu s VLADYKOV and Goblo persa carpathorossicu e VLADYKOV, from the rivers Latorca and Ung.He notes in his paper that the hybrid can be caught in great numbers and that they breed normally. Subsequently, LUKASCH shew in 1933, a new form from the Volga, designating it as Gobio albipinnatu s. Shortly thereafter, in 1934 SLASTENENKO /12/ found a new species in the Dnyeper, naming it Gobio beling i .Finally ,FANG /7/ declared VLADYKOV* 8 hybrid a distinct species in 1943, calling it Gobio vladykovi. BERG /5/ synonymized Goblo beling l with Gobio albipinnatu s in 1949, but he remarked that the specimens from the Dnyeper differ in several characteristics from the typical form, and thus beling i might hold good as a subspecies of albipinnatu s. BANARESCU /1/ shew the species from Roumanie /from the rivers Béga and Temes/ first in 1946, as Gobio beling i SLASTENENKO,denominating it later /2, 1952/ as Goblo albipinnatus vladykov i FANG, since, in his opinion, Goblo vladykov i FANG belongs to the species Gobio albipinnatus LUKASCH, but as the Roumanian and Carpatho-Ukrainian populations deviate in several features from the geographically nearest albipinnatus beling i SLASTENENKO from the river Dnyeper, these populations should be regarded as a well separable subspecies. When BANARESCU separated the two subspecies, he had no specimens for comparison from the Dnyeper and thus relied
