HORVATH — Cleveland, Ohio !■■■■■■■■■■■ ■ I ■■JV ■ ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ ■ B ■ ■ ■ ■ I The author of the VERHOVAY WATCHTOWER extends to each and every Verbovay-Rakoczi member a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR. Features of the November 6 Branch 14 meeting were the reading of the Amendments to the Bylaws and the report of the four delegates to the National Convention. We learned ipuch and, in our opinion, our delegates did well. However we lost one director, the vice presidency, but we gained a few dollars a month for Branch 14. Director Coloman Kolozsvary gave his report on the convention. Nick Yuhasz, Sr. was present as an unofficial observer. Tony and Ann Pinter bought themselves a 1956 four door Chevrolet, two-tone and fully equipped. We saw it and can say it is a beautiful car. Sigismund Kadar is a collector of antique china ware, chairs, oriental ornaments, and so forth. We have been informed that the New Year Eve parfe at the Verhovay will be private, that is, by invitation only. We have heard that all former and all present local Verhovay bowlers are now bowling at the Business and Tradesmen, E. 115 Buckeye Road. A farewell banquet honoring Dr. Andor Leffler, retiring Pastor of the First Hungarian Lutheran Church, was given by the council and other organizations of the church. Many dignitaries were present and appropriate remarks were made by Mayor Anthony Celebrezze of Cleveland, Dr. Joseph Remenyi of Western Reserve, Dr. Stephen Szabó, Pastor of the First Hungarian Reformed Church, Zoltán Gombos, publisher of the “Szabadság,” and the Rev. Gabriel Brachna, succeeding pastor. Chairman of the affair was Theodore Horvath. Toastmaster was Andrew Dono, President of the United Hungarian Society. We looked over the crowd of five hundred or more and saw many Verhovay members, some of whom were John Nagy, Recreational Commissioner of Cleveland, his charming wife, Joseph Stearns, Municipal Judge, Frank J. Pokorny, Chief of Liquor Stores, Louis Petrash, Municipal Judge, Mary K. Sotak, 29th Ward Councihvoman, Frank Szappanos, radio announcer, Julia Kémény, reporter for the “Szabadság”, Jack P. Russell, 16th Ward Councilman, Mr. and Mrs. Coloman Kolozsvary, James Kovach, Charles Katuskey, John Boda, Coloman Karnya, William Ruschak, bailiff, Sam Hank, Jr., George E. Balogh, president of the church council, Louis P. Takacs, president of the Square Club, Steven A. Jakab, mortician, et al. We have heard that Bela Kastan, Ted Beres and his son joined Branch 14 as members. WELCOME. We saw Oscar Federau with a sport coat that is “out of this world” — must be from the planet Mars. We saw Steve Vache, Sr. trying out his new wooden leg. We heard that Sandy and Mel Hegedűs, who own a small shop on E. 93 and Cumberland Ave., were held up November 19th. From reports we have received, Sandy gave a “good account of himself.” Sandy is said to have “clunked” one of the. hold-up men with an 85 cent bottle of wine. Now Sandy is “moaning” that the same job could have been done with a cheaper wine! The men were caught by the police. We hear that Dorothy Kasten is selling ties for Christmas. Steve (Susie) Piscalko will have open house for Sport Club members on Christmas Day at his home. We believe the following organizations will have New Year Eve parties Report of Deaths TheVerhovay Fraternal Insurance Association announceswith profound sorrow the death of the follow- 1 ingmembers: FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER, 1955 Br. Across the street the Szatmár Megyei new hall. There is usually something at the Bethlen Hall. We do not know yet whether or not the new Kossuth Lutheran Church Hall will have a party. St. John’s Hall at 95 and Buckeye always has a New Year party. The Verhovay will have a private party. Of course there are other organizations that will have affairs. So will all the taverns on December 21, 1955 Buckeye, E. 116 St.,' etc., celebrate. There will be no trouble finding fun spots. May I add a few words of advice for those going out on New Year’s Eve: Take the world as it is, not as it ought to be — be careful and don’t drive if your conscience tells you that you OUGHT TO WALK.
