1955 / Verhovay Journal

PAGE 12 Verhovay Journal August 17, 1955 Michael Puskas Elected Legion Post Commander A good Verhovayan in an Eastern city of large Hungarian population strong in Verhovay membership recently added distinction to his name. Michael Puskas, member of Branch 518, New Brunswick, New Jersey, won a unanimous victory after the first ballot in a three way contest and was elected commander to the Middlesex County American Legion at the 24th annual county convention held at Dune’len. Mr. Puskas, who succeeds William Carter, is a member of Joyce Kilmer Post 29, New Brunswick. The new commander, who bested the candidates from Highland Park and Perth Amboy, was installed, I spent much time trying to find an appropriate way to open this new column and, the more I thought of it, the more I convinced myself that the best manner would be to initiate this journalistic adventure with a figurative roar. So if you imagine sound waves of stentorian quality issuing from this mishmash, lo and behold, it is only Branch 226 coming back to life after many years of playing Rip Van Winkle (you recall he was the character who slept for twenty years). We, in our idealism, sincerely hope that other branches will follow suit and will take advantage of the most general form of fraternalism we have — the medium of our official organ, the Verhovay Journal. Every branch should have a publicity agent to report the social and fraternal activities of his branch. NEEDED BADLY. MORE BRANCH PUBLICITY AGENTS. Our first effort is the organization of a bowling league. A committee was picked consisting of Andrew Toth, Alex Goydan, Steve Poliak, Helen Goydan, Julia Lovas and yours truly who manages Branch 226. We have been fortunate enough to get reservations at the newest and most modern bowling alleys in the city. They are Palay’s on Sixth Avenue, fully air conditioned, containing a beautiful lounge, etc. In fact, these alleys are so new that they are still in the making. But along with other new county officers, by Department Vice Commander Joseph G. Danley. The convention was opened at the home of Dunellen Post 119 and was concluded with a dinner at the Arbor Inn. The name of Michael Puskas is one of our best known in Eastern Verhovay circles. Mr. Puskas was manager of Branch 518 until not too long ago when the Home Office appointed a full-time man to manage the branch. He has been Convention delegate and will again represent his district at the Verhovay Convention next month. Congratulations to Mr. Puskas! they will be ready by the start of the bowling season. There is a disadvantage in that the only hours available, rather the best of the available hours, are on Sundays from 6 to 8 P.M. But the promise was made that the next year we will Be able to get a more suitable time. After all, this is our first year. We of the bowling committee ask all those who wish to bowl to get in touch with any one of the committee, so that the plans may be formulated soon. Most of you have the past experience to know that our bowling provides almost as much fun as it does sport. And if we aim for participation in the National Verhovay Bowling Tournament — well, that is an event which is joy supreme for the Verhovay bowler. Before closing this my first column, I should like to remark that Branch 226 has members living many “light years” away from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, the seat of this branch. We have members dwelling in such states as New Jersey, Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, California — to name them as they come to mind. But our “ace in the hole” is member Joseph Mondák in the frozen North —) SUNTRANA, ALASKA. Match that if you can. I repeat. Let’s make our bowling i league a huge success, for if we do our officers have interesting plans for the future. You’ll hear from me again next month — I hope. In . 1950 these stalwart female bowlers shone in Youngstown, the following year, 1951, in Chicago, in 1953 Toledo knew their bowling fame, and in 1955, again in Chicago, the Branch 366 Bowlerettes carried away the top trophy for the Women’s Division, the ALBERT B. ARI MEMORIAL TROPHY, for winning the Team Event in their division. The unselfishness of the Bowlerettes in that they have presented all their trophies for public display in the Cleveland Verhovay Home has evoked much admiration and positive comment. Recently the Verhovay Home in Cleveland held a kind of informal gettogether for these friendly enthusiastic women Verhovay bowlers. At this affair the Bowlerettes pledged one another to future Verhovay bowling victories. < The photograph above, by the Abahazi Foto Arts Studio, shows the Bowlerettes at their festive meeting, with Field Supervisor Leslie J.
