Man alive, if the yearly ..Verhovay rally keeps getting better and bigger every year, just where will we head? We’ll create a monster, but what a wonderful monster! This year, for once, we didn’t hear one single complaint from any of the people there. Mind you, not a single gripe. That’s what we call conducting an affair right down to a “T”. Yessir, it was great. First of all, no one commented on not having enough room to spread out at the hotel. After all, the Conrad Hilton is the largest hotel in the world. Pat Nameth, wife of Field Supervisor Gabriel Nameth, was reluctant letting son Jeff roam around the place for fear that, if he got lost, it would take two days .to recover the lad. Luckily for Casanova Stan Ruz, he recovered his bag which was headed for the Chicago Airport had not> one of Joe Toma’s boys from New York got sight of some feller toting it out the door. It was purely a case of mistaken bag-identity. One of the biggest excitements we received was the pleasant surprise John Sabo and the Directors pulled off during the banquet. It was the sensation and high light of the entire affair. Picture, if you can, in this mammouth ballroom all aglitter with more than, a thousand people awaiting the meal to begin, the band striking up a fanfare, the lights going out, and beautiful infra-red rays sparkling throughout the place — when about fifty waiters inarching and carrying bottles of wine atop ten foot poles, with a table display leading the parade and showing the society’s initials, V.F.I.A. in smart design. It was beau - - tiful. And to top it off, each table got a bottle of the refreshing wine. What a celebration! Of the five teams entered from Verhovay Youngstown, we didn’t believe any serious threat would be given the champs, but, after all, that’s the way things go — I guess. With a few substitutions our teams (shaped up at roll-off time with the following: WOMEN’S TEAMS: St. Stephen's A.C. Anne Frew, capt., Mary Wittway, Freda Benish, Margaret (Grandma) Bunchy, Velma Miller; No. 2 Team. Irene Gianfrancisco, capt., Audrey Mislay, Margaret Ashley, Irene (Shorty) Vigosky, Anne Nemeth. MEN’S TEAMS: Branch 108. Joseph Turner, capt., John Ashley, Frank Horvath, Gabe Nameth, George Skebo; Br. 511. Andy Blasko, capt., John Barkó. Stan Ruz, Paul Koch, Lou Shirilla; Br. 364. Steve Durda, capt., Steve Simon, Dick Safron, Phil Houser, Steve Houser. Then of course we had one of the strongest cheering sections in Mrs. Paul Koch, Mrs. John Barkó, Mrs. Andy Blasko and Margaret Milligan of Niles. Some of the observations made disclosed that Annie Frew and Grandma Margaret Bunchy had one of the best times ever at the Windy City, and we do mean windy. It seemed that while downstairs at the Dairy-Bar soaking up soda after soda, the gang of girls was sitting next to some of the Cleveland hitless Indians. Being a group of Ohioans, as Ohioans are, they all immediately began to strike up some small talk about the good ole Indians. And before long, sodas, milkshakes and such were consumed with reckless abandon. Margaret Bunchy entertained with a few songs and the boys began to shout for more beer — oops, I mean more sodas. Dick Safron confirmed that all reveled well. Seen spending money in the downtown Chicago stores were Mrs. Barkó,, Blasko and Koch ... Steve Durda enjoyed the 01’ South Room downstairs.... The Steve Simons took in the Art Show on Wabash Avenue . . . Frank Horvath and Sports Club president George Skebo were seen rooting for the Indians at the ball game... Dick Safron and Stan Ruz tried to shake the town loose, but alas, too, too much town ... A few paragraphs back we neglected to mention that Mrs. Joe Turner and their two children were also present at the alleys to help cheer Dad on to more strikes and spares. Then, of course, during the banquet ceremonies we were proud to see Mrs. Joseph Turner. Sr. receive a token of remembrance in behalf of her late husband, one of the Directors in whose name graced this membership campaign ... Andy Blasko and John Barkó were there to give the gals plenty of encouragement during their roll-off. . . We didn’t get to see often the Ashleys, but then of course things wei'e going so fast a pace that you couldn’t keep abreast... Mrs. Steve Houser was a good pal by helping Pat Nameth who wasn’t feeling well.. Beaver Falls’ Irene Vigosky did a mean shinny and shake while the balls rolled down the alleys . . . Mary Wittway says she had much better luck on Sunday in the doubles than on Saturday in the team events ... Irene Gianfrancisco and her friend Margaret Milligan flew up, so they leisurely stayed another day to enjoy themselves.. . That good looking Audrey Mislay enjoyed her first trip on the tournament trail and is looking forward to next year’s affair . . . We met the charming Mrs. Frank Kajdi at the banquet, also had quite a few chuckles with the wife of Field Supervisor Joseph Toma of New York ... All we field men got a chance to exchange a few words of insurance talk together... Once again, congratulations to Supervisor Frank Wukovits and his men for having done a splendid job in securing new members. Remember Youngst owners, our Sports Club is slowly coming along and we need your help, so attend the meetings and let’s all get together for our big July 17th picnic at the German-Hungarian Manchoer on Benning Ave. For information on club doings, call either secretary Velma Miller or the downtown office, RI-3-7717. Also, if you’re in the market for added or new insurance, that’s the number to call. This is your ole friend, smiling Steve, signing ofí for now and saying: GO VERHOVAY YOUNGSTOWN!
