MASCOT Branch 50 j By District Mgr. Frank T. Kajdi ChíCttgO, IlUnOlS On February 12, 1955 it was a beautiful day in Chicago. As the morning papers were unfolded across the breakfast tables of Chicagoans, the headlines stood out in big black bold lettering; “Minus 5.” The suit appeared later than usual and by .lunch time the mercury had climbed to “Plus 5.” As the sun began its downward fall, the mercury began a nose dive. By supper time one could hear the slow er-r-r-’s of automobiles, and if you looked out you could see the cars playing tag- with one another. The. members of the Branch 50 Valentine Dance committee had prepared, in detail, arrangements for an evening of fun and dance. At the stroke of 8:00 P.M., the orchestra began playing and above the music could be heard shouts which became familiar to all quite suddenly, “Close the door.” As the doors would open, in would come clouds of white mists, the cold outside air mixing with the warm inside air. Steaming hot coffee awaited the chilled guests. J want to report that Sepessy’s Orchestra did a splendid job with its excellent arrangements of polkas, csárdás-es, waltzes, featuring the Bunny Hop and the Hokié Pokie. With such a fine selection the guests went wild. The musicians had to play over-time, and when they finally stopped playing, yours truly was backed against the stage. I can’t put into writing the threats and finger waving that were extended for not continuing the music. It is needless to say the crowd was happy, gay and having a jolly time. The first annual Verhovay Branch 50 Valentine Dance was a gay evening, and the general opinion is to have a bigger and gayer evening next year. Special tnanks go to the Hungarian Social Dance Club for its participation and leadership in helping to J put across the special evening fea! lures of the Bunny Hop and the Hokié Pokie dances. Thanks to Branch 15, Mr. Joseph HoeJics, District Manager Ernest Taylor, their families and friends for having braved the sub-zero cold to participate in our first annual dance. To the members of Branch 30. their friends and guests: thanks folks for having been with us. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. George Opalko, Jr., the proud parents of a new baby boy. It is a pleasure to announce that the new youngster is already a Verhovay member. It is with sorrow that I report the recent departure of our member, Mr. Stephen Pinkoczi. May his soul find peace and rest. A recent tragedy sent Joseph Petruska to his final resting piacé In the flower of his youth he left this earthly abode. The members of Branch 50 pay their last respects to the above members and extend their sympathies to the bereaved families.
