FAMOUS CONRAD HILTON HOTEL March 16, 1955. Verhovay IN RECENT TELEVISION PROGRAM MARIA REVESZ Journal PAGE 5 Pittsburgh area Hungarians and others who viewed Channel 13 WQÉD, from 9 to 9:30 the evening' of February 16, were treated to a fine Hungarian program from Pittsburgh’s educational and cultural television station The program was designed not only to entertain the district Hungarians themselves but to acquaint non-Hungarians in a small measure with facts relevant to the históriai greatness of Hungary, including clarification of present Hungary’s unwilling i-ole as one of the Iron Curtain countries. Géza Zold, as master of ceremonies. was exceptionally adept as he, answered the questions put to him by 10 year old Maria Revesz, only child of National Secretary and Mrs. Coloman Revesz. Little Maria, endearingly known as “Csöpi” in Hungarian, is a precocious child attending the 5th grade of Jefferson School. Opening and closing the program,' Maria showed her usual dramatic talent. She has portrayed true acting- ability in Hungarian plays and at Jefferson School. We believe that she would The work at Branch 27, here in Toledo, is at the fever-pitch for the forthcoming 'bowling tournament which is going- to he held in Chicago, Illinois this May. It seems as though everybody is preparing a schedule so as not to forget the important "last minute” items, which most of us do. Some have filed their income tax returns early, then if any money is coming back in refund, it can be used for a short vacation over Memorial Day week end. I personally be a happy.find, fftr some talent, scout. The dance numbers, some ancient and some modern, some done by all males, some by all females, som© mixed, were performed by the groups under the direction of dance master Stephen Babnigg. The dancers were Mr. Babnigg, Dorothy Nagy, Grace' I Drienka, Mary Kovács, Pearl Fides, Debra Molnár, Nicholas Zex-invary, Zoltán Toth and Michael Kara. Missf Nagy and Miss Drienka are employees of the Verhovay Home Office. All wore Magyar costumes. Hungarian songs were sung- by Helen Sttpkovits of McKeesport, also in Hungarian dress. The musical background was the Thcgze-Gerber Hungarian orchestra under the direction of Nicholas Thegzc-Gerber. Members of the orchestra area Dr. Gabriel Szent-Ivany, Dr. Emery Hisnyay-IIeinzelmann and Joseph Meszai. It would be a pleasure to see this entire cast again on television. WQED deserves congratulations! for ;ts ív,any fine programs and merits the continuous support of alb I the people. think that the income tax refund check comes mighty handy, and if some of us wonder where we’ll get some extra expense money, here is one source, that is, if you don’t have to give Uncle Sam some extra money! Robert “The Big Bear” Nickel and his charming wife have joined our expanding Branch 27. WELCOME TO VERHOVAY, MR. AND MRS. BOB NICKEL, Being Toledo’s outstanding Dowler for the 1954-1955 season, Bob is a fine addition to our membership. During the past month in Chicago, Boh finished in fourth position in the National Elimination, and for a day and a half held first place, holding his own among the world’s outstanding keglers. This tournament was won by our fellow Hungarian from Cleveland, Steve Nagy, whom Bob beat 3 out of 4 games on Sunday morning during the round robin series. Bob’s high 3 game series is a 791 — and — on Nqv. 25, 1954 shot a 390 GAME on alleys 11-12 at the Marathon Alleys in West Toledo. At Present Bob is'holding . first place in the Toledo Times Traveling Classic League, with an average of 201, being the only member of this fait moving league with an average of plus 200. At the marathon Bob carried a grand 210 average. Rob drills new bowling balls at Playdium Lanes, also repairs the old - ones to your own personal satisfaction. He informs me that if any members of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association want instructions in bowling for the forthcoming tournament — just look him up at the Playdium and he’ll be more than willing to instruct you. When Hob is not at the Playdium, he can be found tending- bar. at Stephen’s Cafe, corner of Front an I Consaul Streets here in Birmingham — or Hungarian — neighborhood. (Aside to/Julies Feyes — these instructions do not apply to you — Bob remembers what you did a few Saturdays ago.) Some of the fine bowling scores for the past few weeks: Dick Sendi had his seventh 700 series,, 729; Bill Curry, 675; and Jula Vargo, 6-15. Nice playing, fellows. Keep it up. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Yan lo, Rossford, Ohio, were very thrilled to see their mommy home fro hi the hospital. WE WISP. HER THE BEST OF HEALTH DURING THE YEAR At this writing, our pastor of St. Stephen's Church, Monsignor Elmer Eordogh, is in critical condition at St. Charles Hospital, Toledo. WE WISH MONSIGNOR EORDOGH A SPEEDY RECOVERY. Cousin Joe Bodnar is on the sick list ip Cleveland, Ohio. Joe, we know that you are from Abauj in Hungary, and the fellows are tough from that part of the country, so get well in a hurry, andJ’ll see you at the tournament in Chicago. The treat will be on me. John Simon, our secretary is hobbling around. He tells me that if his feet do not get better soon, I’d better look for another bowler for Chicago. Tell that specialist to get you in shape. After all, John, you’re Verhovay’s tallest bowler. To some of us, birthdays come and go unmentioned, but we have a gentleman whose birthday is on the same day as that of the Father of our country (George Washington, Feb. 22). This distinguished gentleman, and I very respectfully call him “ The Father of Toledo,” is the editor of our only Hungarian newspaper, "Toledo,” the one and only one Dr. Géza Farkas. The years have piled up so quickly that Dr Farkas will admit that, “I’m over 39.” MAY THE UORD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU WITH US POPMANY MOKE YEARS, FOR YOU ARE A TRUE INSPIRATION FOR THE SECOND GENERATION. I AM QUITE PROUD TO BE A FRIEND OF YOURS! May I too extend the happiest of birthdays to Miss Rose Bodnar whose birthday also falls on the same day. Last week I received a letter from my brother Jimmy stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He tells me that he receives the Verhovay Journal there, wants me to save him “another bur.k” as he’ll be with us in Chicago to attend the tourney. THANKS GO TO MY SISTER ANN WHO SENDS HIM THE JOURNAL AS SOON AS : SHE RECEIVES IT. She reads the Journal first — of course. Some fan mail answers: I received a few inquiries from Windber, Pa. and Scalp Level, Pa., why I never mention mj old stamping grounds. My dear friends from good old Pcnnsy: I haven't forgotten any of you, and never will, but being associated with Branch 27, Toledo and Northwestern Ohio in the capacity of District Manager, I seldom see anyone from Windber, etc. I depend on the Journal for knowledge about you. I was pleased (o read that Louis Vizi was elected president of Branch 59 for the umpteenth time — don’t know the exact time — but if someone will drop me a line and tell me the exact number I’ll mention it in my next month's column. Mr. Louis Vizi is also a member of the Board of Directors. He practically lives next door to my wonderful mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Krempasky! Fraternalism certainly takes hoid in the coal mining towns. Last summer, several of the women pitched in and cooked a delicious meal for their banquet. I saw a long line of familiar names —• the Stephen Galls of Mine 40, the John Spisaks, the Tokis, the Modoks, the Geigers, the Pasztors, the Vitezes, the Millers, and many more. Through the efforts of these people, and many others, Branch 59, Scalp Level, Pa., is put on the map and is one of Verhovay’s most successful active branches. HOW’S THAT, KATY? Hazel Vischer told me that 3he had met a few Verhovay bowlerettes from Columbus at the Women’s Ohio State Tournament which was held here in Toledo. It I know the • Verhovay bowlers from Columbus, all I can say is, “YOU’RE A GREAT GROUP.” I HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL IN CHICAGO. ‘Tis good to see the names of Kajdi and Taylor writing from Chicago. Good luck, boys — makes me fee' good — seeing that I’m not alone among ojur reporting district managers. This being the Journal issue before Easter — Happy Easter to each and every one of you *— have a nice holiday — and remember Scalp Level ar.d Windber — when we — Muzzy, Johnny and Joe and I used to go around on Easter Monday, watering (he women and girls?! Wouldn’t it be fun to revive the old custom?
