Ivancso '«! amagwig» xi Hiai.g-H'«! w a «i'grg»'a.g«i ».Hagai «mmih HHSiHiHmaiHHHiHiHiHiaiiHHiaiiaiHiHiKtH) After attending- two Verhovay National Fellowship Davs and their Ten-Pin Bowling Tournaments. I was asked the following question: “When is Toledo going to be represented with a women’s team?” Well, fellow leaders and members. I am more than happy to report that for the Chicago Verhovay National Fellowship Days it will be a reality! We are going to be represented by a team composed of proven champions in the feminine ten pin game. My many thanks to Hazel Vischer for her real help in makings this team. The members of this fine team are: Hazel Vischer, Rose Bodnar, Gizella Bochi, Betty Boehi and Verdis .Stephens. I would like to can your attention to a few of the bowling records that some of these girls have written in Toledo’s bowling his torv. Hazel Vischer, for two consecutive years, had a high average ■ of 189 to lead the city’s feminine keglers. Her high 3-game total was a rousing 712 — roiled in 1952 at. the Marathon Alleys — games were 225, 243 and 244. Her high single game is 269. which I think, is really shootinghigh for a woman who throws a 16- pourd bowling ball — and after three games, say, “Heck, Steve, I’m not tired- let's roll a couple of practice games!” Rose Bodnar, whom I can proudly call my charming- neighbor, has not been bowling too long — but — she has a few 200 games to her credit and a very high 500 series. Rose is still shooting for her first 600. I personally wish her all the luck to do it in Chicago! Rose has advanced so rapidly in the last few years that she bowls in the fastmoving Van’s Ladies’ Classic League here in Toledo. The attractive Bochi sisters, Betty and Gizella, have been bowling for 7 years. They each have a 230 game to their credit — but have missed the charmed 600 circle a few times. These two sisters, with Rost arid Hazel, make up one team that is entered in Toledo’s Women’s City tournament which, at this writing, is starting to take place. Good Luck. Girls! Verdis Stephens is another champion whom we are very proud to introduce to our readers. Her average was about 189 last season. In November of 1954 she shot a nifty 700 series on games of 279, 256 and 165. I presume the pressure was a little too much on the last game. During the first week of February of this year, Verdis captured the 600 club championship. where only women who shot 600 or better in the past may bowl. These are Toledo’s women team entry to Chicago, and we wish them all the luck in the world to bring back a trophy of a true champion. I am sure that they will write their names in the Verhovay record books as they are doing in Toledo. Welcome and good luck to all of you! We welcome another sports figure to Verhovay Branch 27, namely, Sam Botek. an All-American in soft ball, and our champion as far as bowling iis concerned. Sam, along with Dick Sendi. came in second place at the Central States Tournament which was held in Battle Creek. Michigan. I may add that it surely was good to get a slice of that melon! Sam’s high 3-game series is a 753 total — games of 279, 221 and 253 — which he bowled at the First Base Recreation. As long as I’ve known Sam, he’s been a friendly competitor in the bowling game, but his greatest sports thrill is in soft ball. Sam plays for Post 4906, veteran’s championship team here in the Birmingham neigh borhood. In 1948 and 1952, they captured the world’s Championship in Austin, Texas, and in 1948 Sam was voted All American 2d baseman, and in 1952 All-American left fielder. It was in the 1948 series that Sam’s big thrill came. Playing against Colorado, with a man on base in the late innings and the score 0 to 0, Sam came up to bat in the winning run to win the game and the national championship. To Sam it was just as big; a thrill as Tommy Thompson’s home run was for the New York Giants a few years back. Sam’s batting- average in the tournament was a 316, which merited his All-American rating. I truthfully can say that in my ten years as a baseball umpire, whether I called Sam out on strikes, which I did, win or lose, he’d come to me after the game and say, “Nice game, ump." I knew he meant it. Welcome to Verhovay Sam. I know you’ll be a long, good standing, aggressive member. Louis Cherko, our fisher at Branch 27, has a good record icefishing- — no runs, no hits and no fish! Lon, I think you’ll have to buy me that fish dinner in Chicago, if you keep this up. A distinguished visitor to Toledo during; the past month was my sister Ann, Mrs. John Koleszar of Detroit, Michigan. She informs me that she has to pay an extra 2-cert postage to get the Verhovay Journal in Detroit (seems as though someone missed the boat in transferring her address). Sis, I did my part now, and since my Parker “51” is never out of ink, how about giving me your autograph on the usual three lines? O. K.? I’ll be in to visit you at a moment’s notice, or even a telephonecall will do! Mr and Mrs. Leo Szabó of Swanton, Ohio have another daughter, their third, and in true Verhovay spirit have added her to the growing roster’of Branch 27. Congratulations! I saw, Jula Vargo, “dressed io kill,” at the Rumpus Room Lanes one Sunday afternoon. I asked him, “What’s up?” He said, “Steve, only another girl for you to sign up for Verhovay.” Congratulations, Pat and Julius, on the second daughter, Joanne Lynn. As I always say, the boys will come later. Congratulations are also in order for Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Mandl! foV their first grandchild, a boy. The boy’s great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Takac-s of Birmingham Terrace. Mr. Takacs is past president of Branch 27, Toledo. Answering Marge Nemeth’s query, '“What is a feather party?” Marge, we used to call this a “turkey raffle,” but in Toledo, we give you not only the raffle but a feast along with it! At St. Stephen’s Church, just before Thanksgiving Day we have a banquet of paprika chicken, stuffed cabbage, salad, Hungarian pastry, coffee or any other beverage which you prefer to have. As you sit down to have your first bite of delicious chicken, someone — it may be I — nudges you in the ribs and says, “Marge, ticket so-and-so series is going on the first turkey. Tickets are 2 for 25 cents; befox-e the meal is over and you are lucky, you may walk out with not one but 2 wellfed tuxkeys. So, if you-re in Toledo the Sunday before Thanksgiving, give me a buzz and I’ll ari-ange a good meal and some fun for you. It seems to me that Julius Feyes, our president, purposely keeps his average to about 170 plus. Could it he the Verhovay Tournament, tourney, or the jackpot, because he bowls every Saturday afternoon at the Playdium Lanes? When Juia bowls jackpot or he doubles up with Rip Tinta, he is unbeatable. A telephone call told me he took a few dollars again from the boys — and as for the doubles defeats — just ask Dick Sendi or Jula Vai-g;o. (Who bought the new ball for Feyes, boys?!) It seems as though another doubles match for a steak dinner is in the making between Feyes and Tinta — versus Sendi and Vargo — with your truly keeping score. Please note: the loser buys the score-keeper a steak, too. Is that in the conti-act, boys ? With St. Valentine’s Day a few days gone — and maybe you forgot to get the “little woman” something — here’s a short reminder: Run down to the corner store, get her something, and tell her that you were just waiting for her to mention it to you. You had the gift all the time. Please don’t get caught bringing in the o-ift lest you be "ostracized to the dog-house. I hope this short reminder may help some fox-getter. To Branch 27’s bowlers: Please hand in your highest average as of February 1st as soon as possible. All entries must be áu the Home Office by March 15th. ’until next month, good bowling to you all. MOTOR CLIX NEWS BRANCH 36 — DETROIT, MICHIGAN ~~fr By Jolán Lucas It’s that time of year again in the Motor City — the Annual Verhovay Children’s Day which was very successful last year. It will be held on Sunday, March 27th, beginning at three o’clock in the afternoon, at the former Verhovay Home, 8005 West Jefferson Avenue. Admission is entirely free, and a hearty and cordial invitation is hereby extended to all Verhovay members, their relatives and friends. Refreshments will be served to everyone, and the kiddies will have an exceptional treat in store. To date, a gi-eat number of parents have already volunteered the excellent talents of their youngsters, thus the program promises to be even more varied and entertaining- than last year. Under the capable dii-ection of Mrs. Julia Danko (who is the daughter of Mr. Gaspar Papp of the National Auditing Committee), a dance, group of 22 youngsters is rapidly becoming one of the’ headlining acts. Those parents who would like to see their young talented children perform on this Children’s Day, please contact Stephen Lukacs, Traveling District Manager and Manager of Branch 36, at the district office, 8005 West Jefferson Avenue, or at his home, 9159 Marlborough Avenue. Allen Park 10, Michigan, or call at WArwick 8-2317 for further infornition. Mr. Lukacs and his committee promise a very entertaining and enviable afternoon, so let’s have a large gathering. REMEMBER, SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT 3 O'CLOCK, MARCH 27 th! ♦ I understand that the February meeting was very successful, not only because of the large crowd but because of the refx-eshments' and social gathering after the meeting. Mrs. Stephen Lukacs, Mrs. John Dienes and Mrs. Joseph Marczis were hostesses who sex-ved a tasty feast of sandwiches, delicious cakes aixd other refreshments. Quite a number of the second-generation crowd were thex-e including members of the Branch 36 bowling teams. I certainly am sorry to have missed it all — virus “X” you know. Don’t forget the meetmg in March — Sunday, March 6th, at 2 p.m. sharp. More details of the Children’s Day program will be discussed, also plans for the bowling tournament participants. Thanks to old pal Rose Freshley of South Bend, Indiana for “them kind words” about our newsy “Motor City News” column. You can repay by writing a bowling column for the Verhovay Joxxi-nal. After all, gal, if you write for the "Woman Bowler” paper in South Bend, yoxx oxxght to be an expert, and if you are going to Chicago for the bowling- tournament, who better to wx-ite the bowling angle of the story than, an expert bowler like yourself. Look for my letter and thanks for remembering friend hubby (who remembers you as one fine gal). Until next month, all ye faithful x-eaders (???).
