1955 / Verhovay Journal

VOL. XXXVIII. FEBRUARY 16, 1955 NUMBER 2. Attention: Bowling Team Captains and Branch Managers Entry blanks lor the 1955 Verhovay National Howling Tournament to be played in Chicago, Illinois, May 28-29, were ready for distribution by the Home Office on February 1, 1955. All team captains should apply for these entry blanks by information to the branch managers of intention to participate in the tournament. The branch managers in turn will forward the letters to the Home Office, requesting entry blanks from the Tournament Administrator, National Auditor John Sabo. There should be no delay in applying for these entry blanks because, as in the past, certain branch approval shall be necessary to comply with the rules and regulations. All team captains are urged to apply now through their branch managers. Plan Now for Tournament and Cooperate in Membership Drive “There’s no time like the present time” is an oft-repeated expression with which most of us are familiar. To us Verhovyans and others who are thinking about going to the 12th Annua! Verhovay National Bowling Tournament, to be held in Chicago, Illlinois May 28-29, 1955, the above bit of advice is highly recommended because it is applicable here. 1955 Verhovay National Fellowship Bays need not rise and disappear as the smoke of a pipe dream. If you are contemplating attendance at Verhovay’s climactic yearly sports-social get-together, then there’s no time like the present time to initiate preparation. What are the serious factors that REALLY decide whether or not you will go? EXPENSE and TIME. The1 resolution of these is a simple problem when taken in time. Advice No. 1. From the reading of this article start putting aside in your “Tournament-Fellowship Days Fund” regularly a small sum of money, then by May 28-29 you will have accumulated enough expense money to make your Chicago excursion one free of financial worry. For your information and guidance, the cost of normal participation at the Verhovay Tournament-Fellowship Days is, thanks to the commendable negotiations of the National Executive Tournament Committee, surprisingly reasonable. (Ask those who have gone.) You get the most for the least expense. Advice No. 2 Since the majc-iity of us are da':y working people tied down to the schedules of our respective occupations, we must reckcc with the e'ement of time. By making at rangements now with our employers, we can gurantee ourselves the free time essential to our taking part in Verhovay’s big-time yearly funfest of bowling and entertainment. Ag-ain, your all-considering National Executive Tournament Committee by design — NOT by accident — every year chooses the Memorial (Decoration) Day week end in part to make it easier for you to get time off. Finally, we repeat, there’s no time like the present time for you to save your money and arrange for your time to go to the 12th Annual Verhovay National Bowling Tournament and 1955 Verhovay National Fellowship Days. The Membership Campaign Forerunner of the sports-social spectacle is the membership drive which ends at the Tournament Fellowship Days celebration. This year it is the Turner-Falussy- Phillips Membership Campaign, named in honor of Directors Joseph Turner, Aloysius C. Falussy and Richard J. Phillips. Director Turner died January 11, 1955, but we honor him posthumously also by continuing the use of his name in the title of the membership drive. The late director certainly deserves this honor. It is unfeasible to think of the Tournament-Fellowship Days without the association of a great membership campaign, and so, with appropriate personal names of Verhovay reputation, we promote a drive to swell our membership, then at the big event announce the results. Honor the Directors whose names grace the present campaign — officers whose past Verhovay performances make inspiration — by doingall you can to make the membership drive a tremendous success Our full-time and part-time field workers shall do their part — BUT THEY NEED THE ASSISTANCE OF EVERY VERHOVAY MEMBER. Participate in the Turner Falussy ■ Phillips Membership Camipaign. INSIDE THE CONRAD HILTON Here is beauty that would require a wealth of adjectives to describe. The scene is part — yes, just part — of the gorgeous lobby of the Conrad Hilton Hotel, where you will stay during our national bowling tournament May 28—29, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois. Louis Vassy Succeeds Late Director An Ohio veteran member has been called to fill the directorate left vacant by the death of Director Joseph Turner on January 11, 1955. He is Louis Vassy (Vészy László) who is well-known for his participation in Verhovay activities and who formerly was employed as a field worker by our Association. In accordance with our Bylaws and notification by National President John Bencze, Mr. Vassy, as Alternate from the 6th Directorial District of the 1951 Verhovay Convention, assumes the position of the late Director Turner who represented the aforenamed dis trict. The new Director has a wealth of Verhovay background. He joined the Alliance. Ohio branch December 22. 1920 while still attending school. His branch activities immediately followed. He attended the 1939 Verhovay Convention as a delegate from the 33d Convention District and was elected as a member of the Auditing Committee, holding this position for nine months. He next was appointed October 1, 1910 district organizer of Cleveland and continued in this capacity until November 20, 1942, at which time the pressure of other duties made it imperative for him to resign. At the 1951 Verhovay Convention he came as delegate from the 23d Convention District. Director Vassy was born in Dicsó'szentmárton, Kis-Küküllő County, Transylvania, Hungary, and as a child immigrated to The United States. He now' lives in Dayton. Ohio and is a member of Branch 219 of the same city. Our best wishes to Director Louis Vassy!
