Motor City news BRANCH 36 — DETROIT, MICHIGAN By Jolán Lucas “If Ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed . . . nothing shall be impossible unto you.” ...Matt. 17:20. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! There really isn’t too much to write about these days with reference to branch activities in Detroit, but I couldn’t let the old year out without an encouraging remark or two. Since the Lucas Family fire in February, and moving into the new estate out here in the suburbs, we have all been mighty busy getting organized and into a brand-new routine. I myself haven’t had too much time for my former hobbies, or fraternal work of any sort, beyond trying to ready the new house, struggling to get in as much planting as possible for next summer’s enjoyment, meeting my new neighbors and getting into some community projects. Now that I have said all about my new home, I can again begin to concentrate on Verhovay. First, and most important, was the yearly meeting on Sunday, December 5th. Of course, since I am writing this so near the Journal deadline, I must wait until the next writing to give you my report. 1955 is a Verhovay Convention year. It will be doubly interesting to see how a branch, which is a district in itself, goes about the important choosing of its delegations to the National Convention which will be held in July of next year, if I interpret the minutes of the Board of Directors correctly. It rather astonishes me, that for once in my life, I am not breathlessly eager to attend a Convention. In the first place, July in Pittsburgh can be mighty devastating; in the second place, summers from now on will have a fascinating angle for me because of working in my own my flower garden, and the cruiser that Luke is planning to get in the next month or two for sailing on the Detroit River. * ¥ * District Manager Stephen Lukacs and family have moved to their new home. The address is 9459 Marlborough, Allen Park, Michigan, on the corner of Moore Road. The telephone number is still the same, WArwick 8-2317. All members please note the new address for your information. We hope the Lukacs family will enjoy their new home as much as we do ours; * * About the only social activity here was the Millionaire’s Party held by Dearborn’s Branch 429 on November 20th in the recreation room of Branch Manager Nicholas Horvath at 9955 Fox, Allen Park. The entire familiar membership attended — the MacLeod’s, the Julius Szalay’s, the Robert Pavella’s, the Plesivic’s, tha Parsons’, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Toth, Mrs. Anna Horvath, and the Horvath Clan, and perhaps many others who were there earlier in the evening, as the Lucas couple didn’t get there until after midnight. Why? Because Larry was having a teen-age birthday party to celebrate his sixteenth. If you want to have fun, plus a triple head ache, try entertaining about three dozen teen-agers with their “hot” dancing, their “c-r-a-z-y” records, feeding them at 9:30 rather than at a more proper 11 p. m., and booting out “party-crashers.” Let one teen-ager have a party and the whole neighborhood tries to “crash in.” WOW! Anyway, we got to the Millionaire’s Party about 12*:30, and the first thing we had to do was buy a million dollars worth of stage money for a buck, to be cashed back in at a discount of ten per cent, or 90cent for very million dollars. Heavy winners were Mary and Tony Plesivec who counted for a half hour the $15,860,000 for $15.86 minus $1.58. Talk about big “loot” “floating around!” Brew was $25,000; sandwiches were likewise; card playing and other games were all in the big money. Branch Manager Nicholas Horvath (brother Nick to me) was top man of the evening in forma! evening dress, top hat, tails, cumerbund, and a foot long cigarette holder. It was lots of fun, and different from the ordinary run-of-themill dull entertainment. Too bad we didn’t get there earlier. The old gang looked as good as ever, and I surely miss them all. Irene MacLeod baked an enormous and lavish cake which went to the winner, brother Steve Horvath, but Branch 429 is such a fraternal group that Steve had them cut up the cake so all of Us could have some. Let me know about the next shindig. We’ll go! * ¥ * Just a word to Marge Nemeth of New York. Look for a letter from me soon, as I believe I have a solution for that outsize basket of your sons’. After all, I reared two of them to manhood, so who could be better qualified to give you a hand with your problem. You sound like the Ferret of younger Days. I’d like to know you better! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! 12996 Rosedale Avenue Wyandotte, Michigan AVenue 5-0106 Total: 15.
