PAGE 6 VerhovayJournal November 17, 1954. News From Northwestern Ohio BRANCH 27 TOLEDO, OHIO By Stephen J. Ivancso Joseph Szalay, treasurer of the very successful Ohio Verhovay Day Picnic, asks each and every member, who received books for the picnic, to settle their accounts at onc§. The Verhovay Branch 14 soccer team has won its first game. Joseph A. Kadar, probation officer and coach of the team, asks for support of these fine boys, who are carrying the banner for Branch 14 and Verhovay in general. We were unable to go to the Branch 14 grape festival. We did hear that St was crowded and that all who attended had a pleasant time. We looked in on Branch 366’s bowling night. The players were going great with the exception of Bill Torda whose thumb stuck to the ball. Louie Torda was bowling for the first time this year. A fractured toe had sidelined his activities in bowling. Mr. John Matyas, former manager of the Verhovay hall, has been ailing. We are hoping that he will regain his health soon. Valentine Nagy has been in the hospital for several weeks. Friends, under the leadership of Louis Varga, got together and staged a card party in his behalf at Settlers Tavern. About $650 was raised for him. Judge Louis Petrash’s pet project is the Lander Road Catholic Home for the Aged, which celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary October 3d at St. Margaret’s Hall. Judge Joseph Stearns of Branch 14 will be glad wh#n he leaves the traffic bench. It is a straining grind. We have watched him mete out "justice. He has a thorough understanding of these problems. I wish to t^e this opportunity to thank our editors for their help in this latest election. I don’t know how I’ll make out because I am writing this column October 28, 29, and it) will go in before the election. I am deeply grateful for all the help received, for the kind words of our columnist, Mrs. Margie Nemeth of New York Branch 48. Thanks and more thanks. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Pinter attended the American Catholic Society’s 60 year anniversary banquet at St. Elizabeth Church hall, where the society originated. We attended the Woodmen of the World banquet of Camp 212 held at St. Stephen’s hall. This is a 95% Hungarian camp. Camp 212 was celebrating its 45 th year. We saw Joseph Barry and Daniel Kali, also Mr. and Mrs. James Kovach (he is president of Branch 14). The Verhovay sign on the Cleveland building ,should either be printed or removed. Why do not the responsible ones have the sign repaired or replaced? The entertainment committee has shown real progress this year in its program and will climax 1954 with a New Year’s eve party at the Verhovay home. Joseph Barry, entertainment committee chairman, already has an orchestra for the event, that of Németh Baráth Dezső. Let’s get our reservations now from Leslie J, Dus, field supervisor and manager of Branch 14, Mr. Nicholas Yuhasz, manager of the Verhovay home, Mr. Joseph Barry or Mr. Joseph Szalay. The profits from these affairs go toward defraying expenses connected with the Verhovay dead, such as! wreaths, cars, pall bearers, etc.; cultural activities, sports and general welfare work. Your attendance at the Branch 14 affairs is your support of these worthy causes. You will help, won’t you? The Sports Club bowling league didn’t get going, neither did the meeting. So the November meeting is expected to be hectic. The yearly Christmas party will be discussed, and this should make lively conversation. Santa should be nice this year. The Sport Club card party, held October 23d, was attended by about seventy-five people. The women of the club did all the work with the exception of Bela Kastan, who was tending bar. Oscar Federau and Melvina Hegedűs danced rather professionally together. There were plenty of door prizes, thanks to the committee of Mrs. Joseph Bodnar, chairman, Mrs. Anthony Pinter, Mrs. Betty Knapp, Mrs. Helen Oravis and Mrs. Dorothy Kastan. Frank Oravis, president of the Sports Club thanked the members and their friends for their support of the card party, then drew the first door prize. In the Buckeye Road district here in Cleveland, Ohio, which is considered 70% Hungarian, we usually have two political rallies’’ before election. One is held on lower Buckeye and the other on upper Buckeye. People behind these rallies are prominent Hungarian men, many of them members of Verhovay. The Sun Theatre rally, which was held October 27th, was a masterpiece of showmanship. Jack P. Russell, councilman of the 16th ward. Cleveland, handled with finesse this meeting. Our congratulations to him for a job well done. The Moreland rally was held the following day, October 28th. Three prominent Verhovayans appeared, Governor J. Lausche, Senator Thomas A. Burke and Mayor Anthony Celebrezze. We extend our greetings for a Merry Christmas and a Hapgy New Year to all Verhovay members, their families and friends. Ex animo, JOSEPH J. HORVATH c.o. Verhovay Home 8637 Buckeye Road Cleveland 4, Ohio The meetings at Branch 27, Toledo, are beginning to create a great interest among the younger members. During the months of September and Octobér, the younger set was wondering about the next sit© for the future bowling tournament. A discussion was held in regard to getting the tournament committee to bring about some action on actual pins. This and only this, shows thei true champion — and creates a greater interest among the higher average bowlers. Word of interest to this effect was heard in Cleveland — from a few of the better bowlers — who would also like to see some action taken on the actual pin side of the tournament. Other fraternal organization’s bowling tournaments started out like ours and grew to such proportions that actual pins with handicap were brought in, and showed such overall increase in the pctual pin side that some of the nations top bowlers now are members and participate in their tournaments. We, here in Toledo, have bowlers that are for handicap, and we also have bowlers that have to shoot 600 to make up their, handicap — in other words, we should surely go for both. After the September meeting, the entertainment committee, under the very capable supervision of Julius Feyes, revealed the names of the five bowling prize winners. The bowling ball was won by J. Meir; the bag and shoes go to J. Molnár; the 3d prize to S. Kijowski; the 4th prize to S. Meis; the 5th prize to F. Szollosi. Julius Feyes wishes to thank each and every one who made this social get-together a success. One of the best matches of the season in The Toledo Times Traveling Classic was held at the Auburndale Lanes, on Alleys 1 and 2, between Hertzfeld Olds and Jack’s Men’s Shop — on which yours truly and several of our Verhovay members bowl. We won all three games! Here are the scores: Hertzfeld Olds — Totals were 971 — 999 — 945 — 2915 Jack’s Men’s Shop 974 — 1012 — 946 — 2932 The Harvest Ball held on Saturday, October 23, was a real success. The affair was held by the Branch 296 Mixed Ten Pin Bowling League, It proved to be one of the most successful! events ever held by that group. The beautiful decorations and grapes made a very colorful sight. Adding to the occasion were Afina, Marie Fintor, Mrs. Helen Dudzinski, Mrs. „Mary Wesoloski, Mrs. Mary Toaso, Mrs. Helen Stull and Mrs. Mary McPherson, who were dressed in native costumes. * # * A 270 Winchester Rifle awarded by the bowlers on October 30 was A total of 17 pins shows a 3-game1 victory, which put our team one game out of second place and 4 games out of first place. We won all three games. Bill Smith, fellow member and president cf the Times Classic, is back in action after having been out for better than a month with a bad wrist. His presence is already felt I by the opposing teams. John Mokri, our treasurer, walked into our meeting last' month with a wide smile on his face. His dear wife, Agnes, had presented him with a handsome assistant treasurer. Their son is named Michael Jeffry, and he, too, is added to Branch 27’s roster. After the distribution of cigars to the officers and the members, the meeting resembled a Los Angeles smog! Congratulations! John and Agnes, and we hope some day that Michael may do as good a job for Branch 27 and Verhovay as his father is doing. Branch 27 extends its sympathy to the family of the late Joseph Potoczki. Mi-. Potoczki was present at our October meeting on Sunday, October 10 — joking with the members — and it was a shock to all of us when we heard the sad news that he had passed away on the following Monday. His heart could not take any more. At this writing, Toledo opened up its new airport which will be served by the largest airlines. It is located west of the city of Toledo, on Route 2. About the time we read this column, Thanksgiving Day will be around the corner and Election Day will be past history. We, in this country, should bé proud and thankful — for we have the right to voice our opinions by voting, and once a; year thank the Lord for that Freedom. Until next month, a blessed Thanksgiving to all of you — go easy on that turkey — and good bowling to the bowlers! Happy Thanksgiving! given to George Mason of Logans Ferry. * * * Time for election of branch officers is just around the corner. The election of officers will take place at the meeting on Sunday, December 12, beginning at 3:00 P. M. The members are urged to attend this all-important meeting. * * * A surprise birthday party was held On Saturday. October 23, for Mrs. John Bal fa, Sr. More than fifty friends attended the banquet to extend their best wishes. Mrs. Balia expresses her thanks to all for the many beautiful gifts she received. FLASH! - FLASH! We have been sent the good news that columnist Joseph J. Horvath was elected State Representative to the General Assembly of Ohio. CONGRATULATIONS, State Representative Horvath! We know that you, as a true fraternalist, will work for the best interests of the fraternals, as you will in your other duties also. POWER CITY NEWS SPRINGDALE. PA. AND VICINITY by Edward A.
