Ivancso Hello everybody! It gives me great pleasure to report to you that Branch 27 of Toledo is ^celebrating it’s 50th year as a unit of the great. Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. As we clean the dust off of the minutes of the first meeting of Branch 27, we find that we have one living charter member in our midst. His name, fellow members, is Joseph Rasi, Sr.! Over the 50 long years, Mr. Hasi held every office, and sev era] times, more than one. He has also been a delegate at one of the Verhovay National Conventions. It is my pleasure to be able to tell you that Mr. Rasi is still working actively for the betterment of our branch and for his fellow members — a very loyal Verhovay member, if there ever was one! Members who are in our organization for over 40 years are: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Veres, Mr. John Nagy, Mrs. Andrew Tamas and Mr. Julius Gombos. Over the course of 50 years at Branch 27, many loyal Verhovay members have put in their fullest effort' into making Toledo one of the strongest Verhovay branches. At this time we should like to mention Mr. Joseph Beres, Mrs. Michael Feyes, Julius Kerekes, Sr., John Mokri, Sr., Joseph Poes Sr., Stephen Takács, and Monsignor Elmer Eördögh, pastor of St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church — one of our most beloved, outstanding and respected members. As this 50th Jubilee Year rolls around, Toledo is in a happy, joyful mood. Our beloved National President, John Bencze, is being honored for his 25th year as a National Officer. We here, in Toledo, are doing our very best to help put bricks ott bricks to the building which National President John Bencze is raising to higher levels — by securing new members as never before in the history of the branch. Congratulations are in order for National President John Bencze for bis 25 years as a National Officer and to Branch 27, Toledo, for it’s 50 years as a branch of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. Your truly is indeed honored to be a member of this select group! Bowling season is just around the corner — can you hear that familiar early season crying towel song — that the pins have plastic bottoms, that the alleys are too slick, that the pins are too heavy, and the old, very favorite — “this is my first time out — never touched the ball all summer” — remember? Later, one finds out the party was bowling all summer at the other end of town! Some of the Verhovay boys are going to bowl in the best league in town — the “Toledo Times Traveling Classic” — and are going to bowl under the name “Jack’s Men’s Shop.” Members of the bowling team are Steve Sosko, Andy Zigray, Julius Vargo,, “Dick” Sendi and yours truly. This league operates in 16 different bowling establishments, and you visit each one twice over the course of the season — each time on different alleys. The team average this year had to be at least 950 — any bowler with an average under 180 over the season is automatically dropped and a new one added to have a high enough average to make the said league average standard each new year. Each team bowling in the Times Classic League is fully uniformed, and should a member of the team show up for bowling without his regular uniform, he is fined one dollar -— this dollar goes into the banquet fund. The League will start .bowling at 6:45 P.M. on Thursday evening for the first half of the bowling season — and at 9:00 P.M. for the second half. Total prizes that will be distributed for the eight teams is about $4,850.00 — the largest in Toledo’s bowling history. I will do my very best to keep you informed on the averages, standings and other good or bad news for the coming bowling season. As all of the bowling league have their own officers, I’m very proud to report to you that the president of the Toledo Times Traveling Classic is William A. Smith, a new member of Branch 27, Toledo. “Bill”, as we know him, is a prominent sports figure. In his younger days, Bill was one of the most feared soft ball hitters in this vicinity. A month or so ago, I -saw Bill playing in an Old Timers game — he hit for the cycle — single, double, triple and a home run! After the game, he Came to me and said, “Steve, I’m getting too old for this game.” I replied, “I see! Four for Four! Some of us wished we could do this good in our better and younger days!” As for bowling, Bill is one of the best com* petitors in the business, always averaging close to 200, and, if my memory serves me right, he bowled a 296 single last year and a perfect 300 game the season before, not to forget the numerous 700—3 game totals. Bill has been an officer for many organizations, and we are proud to welcome him to Verhovay Branch 27, where we know his presence will be respected. Mrs. William Smith is also a new Verhovay member We wish Marge Nemeth a speedy recovery from her illness — hoping it wasn’t too serious — so that she can get back to her column. We ask all of our good friends in Cleveland to back Joseph J. Horvath in his candidacy for State Representative to the General Assembly of Ohio from Cuyahoga County. Welcome to the following new members of Branch 27: Mrs. Lewis “Dick” Sendi, Mrs. Dorothy White, Terence Lee, Michael and Barbara Jean Szabó, children of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Szabó, Linda Ann Turi, Mr. and Mrs. John Kocsis and Matthew Harley Stecker. So long for now. I’ll be back next' month with more news.----------*•§ £ a------------1954 RED CROSS CAMPAjGN THEY SPEAK FOR OUR MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGNS There has never been a Verhovay membership drive that did not accomplish its express purpose. Our membership campaigns always bring in new members who might never have been enrolled but for the extra effort demanded by a! particular Verhovay drive for added membership. Robert Donald, born September 21, 1949, who will begin school in fall, and Vilma Susan, born April 9, 1945, an outstanding pupil in the 5th grade ,are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Sigismund Filep, 3221-46th St., Astoria 3, Long Island, New York. Yes, they are recent members THANKS to another Verhovay getout-and-get-‘em spirited search for new members. The youngsters have joined theiri parents and brother Ernest, who have been in Verhovay for the past ten years, as members of Branch 48, New York City. Right now we have a new membership campaign in honor of the 25th Verhovay anniversary of National President John Bencze. Every Verhovayan is earnestly requested to aid this latest Verhovay membership crusade.-----------■— —----------------— POWER CITY SPRINGDALE, PA. AND NEWS VICINITY by Edward A.
