Sports Promotion Can Be Beneficial No one can deny the fact that where a certain common interest exists there you will usually find people, and where you find people there is where you should find the Verhovay Fraternal Insuranrce Association. Our society has for years carried on programs of interest for its members, and there is no better opportunity than the present for the continuation of social and sports promotions. Evidence is being compiled of the need for activities which will bring together people and which will keep them engaged directly for their entertainment benefit and indirectly for the society’s benefit. Sports clubs are making their appearance almost everywhere — like mushrooms popping their white heads through the lovely green carpeting after the blessing of a generous rain. Why is it that our members have given recently so much emphasis to sports endeavors? Simple yet true the answer is: because they like it! People have just a certain measure of free time available for entertainment. This free time can be very beneficial to them if their pursuit of entertainment be a wholesome program of sports. The question before us is: What are we going to do about it? Are we going to say, “That’s fine, let them do it!” Are we going to ignore this social need of our people? Or are we going to help lead the way for all sports-seeking members? If we choose the latter course, we shall be doing the right thing both for the membership and the Association. True we are primarily a fraternal benefit society offering various types of insurance and accident and health benefits. It is granted that people need these types of protection. However, these protectives are available at many insuring institutions. Why, WE ASK WHY, is it that thousands of members of Verhovay secured these types of protection with our insurance, organization instead of some strictly insurance company? We like to feel that the majority of them did so because of the very convincing, the very capable field force we have working for us. But was it just that? In our humble opinion it was something additional — that something extra known as fraternal benefits plus! Where can you give your members not only insurance protection but also an opportunity to carry on a program of social needs such as they shall determine for themselves. At Verhovay of course! And here we shall be doing a service for the whole of the organization, because this type af a program can yield only success, and there is nothing like success to convince others to be with you. Large numbers indicate strength and it is usually the strong and the mighty who find others rallying to them. No other kind of insurer could compete with the fraternals if the fraternals would realize that it is FRATERNALISM PLUS that is the force which leads more people to their doors. Additional members can be ours and the interest and the enthusiasm that will engulf these new members will in turn bring more new members, a veritable cycle. As an example of what good can be done even with a few, take, for instance, the Verhovay Sports Club of Branch 14 Cleveland, Ohio. The writer had an excellent opportunity to attend the fifth anniversary dinner of the above. This small, but very active, group of Verhovay members arranged and staged a very BEGIN YOUR BOWLING PROGRAM NOW The echoes of the last bowling tournament, still ringing in our ears, remind us once again that' immediate action should be taken to organize the. branch bowling teams. Every year the National Executive Tournament Committee, carrying out' the decisions of the Board of Directors, tries to fulfill its obligations well, and year after year we have seen many improvements as new (angles are tried and old kinks are ironed out. While it has been a difficult task to satisfy all concerned, the Committee has tried its best to • tnake our tournaments satisfactory to the great majority of the bowlers. It is our desire to do a good job to please as many members as we can, and, with this in mind, we call attention of all the bowlers to the necessity of beginning now the program of bowling for the coming season. At the present time no one knows where the next bowling tournament will be held. This matter will be given consideration by the Board of Directors at its September, 1954 meeting. The Board will review the Nevy York tournament, then decide what action should be taken for the future. The findings of the Board of Directors will be known to us after the September meeting. Every year we receive letters from members seeking information on how to get a team or league| started. To help our branches organize teams or leagues we publish the following, which we feel will be of invaluable aid: If your branches does not have a tenpin bowling team but would like to form one this year, the proper place to turn for assistance is your City Bowling Association. The City Bowling Association is a branch of the American Bowling Congress, similar in respect to what your own branch is to the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. City Bowling Associations are located in almost every city, town or village where bowling alley establishments exist. Each association has a regular body, of officers-president, secretary, treasurer, etc. These bowling leaders regulate the tenpin bowling activity of their locality in the interest of the American Bowling Congress, They are in these functions to help all male bowlers in the organization of bowling teams and bowling leagues. These officers, principally1 the secretary, will give whatever aid is necessary to help your branch properly organize its team or teams, They will also assist you in organizing your own bowling league if you have four or more teams in your branch. If you have only one team and you wish to find an A. B. C, sanctioned league which will admit your team to league membership, these officials will render this service also. No problem is too small or too great for them: they are serving to help all tenpin bowlers to organize and to play under the sanction of the American Bowling Congress. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CONTACT THE OFFICIALS OF YOUR LOCALITY’S CITY BOWLING ASSOCIATION, VISIT ANY ONE OF YOUR BOWLING ALLEYS. THE PROPRIETOR OR THE MANAGER WILL BE QUITE WILLING TO GIVE YOU THE .NAME AND ADDRESS OF THE OFFICIAL TO CONTACT. Now just for the sake of example, in the Pittsburgh district any branch wishing to organize a team or league need simply to contact R. R. Dillinger, 1729 Chartiers Avenue, McKees Rocks, Pa. Mr. Diliinger, who is Verhovay’s tournament secretary, is also secretary of the City Bowling Association of Pittsburgh. Years ago, when we began our howling tournaments, it was the aforesaid bowling association, and chiefly Mr. Diliinger, who gave us the technical advice essential to the organization and promotion of our tournaments. The above has been about American Bowling Congress sanction for male bowlers. The same information, however, holds true for women bowlers except that their sanction is under the auspices of the Women’s International Bowling Congress. The W. I. B. C. maintains City Bowling Associations for women bowlers throughout the country, just as the A. B. C. does for men bowlers. It is our sincere advice that yon contact the officials of the City Bowling Associations as early as possible for their services. Their expert guidance will make easy the fulfillment of your bonding plans. Friends are like souvenirs or brica-brac; some of them grow dearer to you though the years, others you discard. Thanksgiving always comes at an appropr-iate time ... after the November elections. interesting afternoon of entertainment, plus good food for the benefit of an appreciative audience. The good influence exerted by these sports enthusiasts was a credit to Branch 14 and a big fraternal contribution for the society as a whole. We feel sure that new members for Verhovay was the ultimate goal, and the good will which was established was another salient gain for us. This group, encouraged, by Branch 14 as well as the Home Office, is enjoying fraternal life and at the same time making a progressive contribution. To keep such enthusiasm and such interest alive, we should be of assistance, we should encourage such endeavors, we should promote this kind of fraternalism. Just as Verhovay today leads among the fraternals with a Hungarian background, in the field of bowling, so should we lead in all forms of sports. The national bowling tournaments, the national fellowship days, must be kept alive, and in fact new developments should take place. Promotion of sports, social programs and all fraternal endeavors will mean a bigger and stronger Verhovay consisting of members who value not only their solid insurance protection but their membership as well. It is quite obvious that socials and sports can and do make our beloved Verhovay an attractive organization naturally conducive to new membership.
