PAGE 10 Verhovay Journal June 16, 1954. FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF HUNGARY AND HIS LADY TAKE A BOW The Honorable Miklós Kallay and his charming wife sat at the No. I table together with National President John Bencze, Mrs. Bencze and their daughter Miss Yolanda Bencze. Others who are pictured above are John Szalanczy, National Treasurer, and George K. Borshy, Executive Secretary, Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. MARGARET EMODY THRILLS VICTORY DINNER AUDIENCE The Night of Budapest atmosphere is very much in evidence as Margaret Emody sings her way into the hearts of the 1,000 members and guests who attended the Victory Dinner and Dance. She and the other lovely ladies, members of Branch 18, New' Y»rk, contributed much to the gaiety and splendor of the evening. I should like to thank each and every Verhovay member, 'their friends, relatives and neighbors for their kind support at the primary of May 4, 1954. I was nominated. I am very happy. But the big work1 is ahead of us, that is, to see that I am elected this November 2, the day of days for me. I have no fear of the outcome -if I get the support of my fellow Verhovayans and their friends. “X” beside my name on the ballot will do the trick. I solicit your vote in November. I am a Democrat but I ask also for Republican support. THANKS AGAIN. We have heard that John Smith, Verhovay member’ from Barberton, Ohio, was nominated on the Democratic ticket for representative from the 14th Congressional District. Good luck, John Smith. We saw at the Cuyahoga County Convention of the Democratic precinct committeemen Joseph Szalay and Joseph Hegedűs, bath former presidents of Branch 14. Joseph Hegedűs, Jr. may run for political! office next year. We no longer see Sam and Adeline Sovoca. Steve Szekely was in Florida for a month. Yep, those wealthy people! Bela Bertalan, having returned from two weeks in Hot Springs, Arkansas, will now tour Washington, District of Columbia, New Jersey and New York. Ah, those itchy feet! Steve Barry will be the controller for the picnic on June/ 27th — at Alexander and for Branch 14. A1 Ganim’s, retired industrialist, will now go out ta Woodland Hills Park to see soft ball games. Mrs. Mary Matusz was a recent visitor next door to our home. We were glad to see her. Bert and Marge Luscik are frying speck nearly every Saturday and Sunday in their back yard. To top it, they have a picnic table. Bert Stofcho, master carpenter and builder, has been ill. He certainly has our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Judge Louis Petr ash has more pictures taken of him with ladies than anybody else we know. Oscar Federau, engraver, fisher, and so forth, will now take up horse shoe pitching. Irene Nagy, wife of Joe from Branch 366, was in the hospital. We wish her speedy recovery. Several members of Branch 14 have expressed their disapproval of suspending meetings for the summer. Don’t forget the Branch 14 picnic on Sunday, June 27, at Alexander Grove, Canal Road and Sagamore Road. It will be) Frank Gyürke and his orchestra for the dancing, with plenty of refreshments for all. Go out early to fry speck. The grounds are spacious. Ye outof-towners ,go to the Verhovay home, 8637 Buckeye Road, Cleveland, for directions. EVERYBODY IS WELCOME. This is the first of the two picnics to be held at the same location with the same orchestra. The onlv difference is the time and the name. On Sunday, August 29, it will be Ohio Verhovay Day and valuable prizes will be given. PLAN TO ATTEND BOTH AFFAIRS. Judige Andrew Kovachy is! in the field for probate judge this fall. The judge is a Verhovay member deserving our support, has been humane and distinctly deserves a promotion. I’d bet that Charles A. Vanik. who is the Democratic nominee in the 21st Congressional District, could be persuaded to become a Branch 14 member if the proper approach be made. There is no good reason why he shouldn’t become a member'. Some of his most influential backers are Hungarians and Verhovayans, to wit, Louis Varga, Joseph Krupansky, Alex J. Horvath, Sigismund Kadar, Joseph Szalay, Joseph Hegedűs, William Ruschak, Judge Joseph Stearns, and many others. Come into the fold, congressman. We saw the bowling teams •of Branch 361 and Branch 366 practising at Colony Recreation. They were perfecting themselves for the Verhovay tournament. Joseph A. Kadar, probation .officer of the Cleveland courts, will lend a hand to the Verluv vay soccer team. Joe was one of the stars of the game years ago. We heard that Coloman Revesz, Verhovay National Secretary, was in Cleveland Sunday, May 23, at a dedication in th<j Hungarian Culture Gardens. WELCOME. Did you know that out of the total number of teams in this last tournament, of which there were 70 teams, 9 states) were represented. Ohio sent the most teams, 34; Pennsylvania, 14; Michigan, 6; Illinois, 4; New Jersey, 4; New York, 3; Indiana, 2; West Virginia, 2; and Wisconsin, 1; Verily, Ohio’s contribution was about 250 people, about $3,500 to the tournament fund and the dinner-dance. We won’t figure' the hotel, traveling expenses and incidentals. A rough guess would be about $11.500, thei least. How about holding the next tournament in Pennsylvania? Shall it be Pittsburgh? Next year will be the Verhovay National Convention. Be ,sure to elect delegates who will do constructive work at the convention — and who believe in FRATERNALISM. My personal congratulations '(o the members of Branch 14 who were successful in the lastj election; Governor Frank J. Lausche, Senator Thomas A. Burke, and John Smith for Congress. 14th District. Let’s put our Verhovay members “over the top” in November. Ex Animo, JOSEPH J. HORVATH c.o. Verhovay Home 8637 Buckeye Road Cleveland 4, Ohio (Editorial Note: In general! conversation it has been asked of the editor what Mr. Horvath means by his complimentary closing, “Ex Animo.” This is a Latin expression meaning “from the heart,” “sincerely.” Columnist Horvath indicates that what he writes has a purity of purpose and his own deep sincerity.)
