SPRINGDALE, PA. to Honor New York Members With Special Delegation PAGE 10 Verhovay Journal April 21, 1954 JUST 50 YEARS AGO We suppose that 50 years to the elderly, as to Mi. and Mrs. Mike Varga who recently celebrated their golden wedding, does not convey the magnitude of time as to the young who must look ahead. Mr. and Mrs. Varga might sigh and say: “Just 50 years ago we were married.” It was open house from 3 to 7 Sunday, March 21, 1954, for the friends and relatives who came to fete Mr. and Mr5. Mike Varga of Route 8, S. 4th Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan on the observance of their 50 years of wedded life. The wedding of Mike Varga land Miss Esther Makai took place March 10, 1904 in Hungary. They came to Kalamazoo 47 years ago. Mr. Varga worked for Ingersoll Steel and Disc Company for 45 years before his retirement two years lago. Gardening and chores around the home now interest the old couple. The Vargas have two sons and a daughter, Steven in Kalamazoo, Peter in Detroit and Sophie (Varga)’ in Hungary, seven 'grandchildren and one great-grandchild. They :are members of the Evangelical Reformed Church. We may add that the Varga family has generously contributed members to Verhovay. Mr. Varga himself has been a member for 45 years, almost as long as he has been married. He is a member of Branch 123, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and was its president for 10 years and its manager for 21 year's. To Mr. and Mrs. Mike Varga we say: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, AND MAY YOU ENJOY THE DECEMBER OF YOUR LIFE MOST FULLY. POWER CITY NEWS SPRINGDALE. PA. AND VICINITY by Edward A. Mattie Branch 296 After years of hoping and planning for a new Verhovay Home, our dreams were finally brought to realization March 12th. On this day a great event took place in the history of Branch 296. Five months after work was started on the building we moved in and the social quarters opened for business to its members. On Friday, March 12th, an “open house” was held. At this time the general public was given the opportunity to come in to inspect the premises. This event proved to be very successful. Branch officers served as guides to the guests and at the end of the tour the visitors were served coffee and home made pastries. The pastries were donated by the members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary. Many thanks to those who sent floral tributes: H. J. Clowes, Walter Wesoloski, Martin and Gemsky and Tarentum Beverage Co. The new Verhovay Home is located at 130 Walter Lane. Members are cordially invited to bring their friends to the new home. An orchestra is engaged at the home every Saturday evening. As yet no definite group has been engaged, thus so far each Saturday there is a different band of musicians to see what one appeals to the members most. BOWLING Three bowling teams will represent Branch 296 at the annual bowling tournament in New York City. Two men’s teams and one women’s team will try to bring back a few of the many prizes offered. No definite decision has been made on the mode of travel to the tournament. The trip may be made by chax-tered bus or train coach, if there is a sufficient number of people wishing to attend this event. Nonbowlers who would like to make the trip are asked to get in touch with the president, John Balia, or the branch manager, for details. Everybody is welcome, and the more going the merrier. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE The branch membership drive is progressing very well. But there are still a few members who have not participated in getting their quotas. Members taking part in the branch membership drive will also be taking part in the national Macker-Vizi membership campaign. This campaign is honoring two of Verhovay’s outstanding members and officers, Julius Macker, Vice President, and Louis Vizi, a member of the Board of Directors. MOTHERS DAY PROGRAM On Sunday, May 9, our yearly Mother's Day program will be held after the regular branch meeting. All mothers, young and old, are cordially invited to attend. MISCELLANEOUS Belated congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tarpay on the birth of Margaret Elizabeth who came into this world November 22, 1953. Our secretary, Frank Fintor, is back to work after being a patient in the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for two weeks. A number of other memoers were in the hospital recently, and they are: Louis Bodnar, Mrs. Louis Wislie, Mrs. Stephen Üveges, Charles Molnár and Steve Zimerlink. SAGA OF YOUNG (CHARLIE YOUNG OF BRANCH 383, BUFFALO, N. Y.) Charlie and Helen Young, husband and wife, recently celebrated their first year in the business world as the owners and operators of “Krakomperger’s,” 52 Rano Street, Buffalo, New York’s one and only Hungarian restaurant which has been featuring fine food, music and refreshments for the past 31 years. Charlie, age 45, is one of a wellkonwn family of 8 sons and 1 daughter, all members of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. He has been living in Buffalo for some 27 years, and as a youth lived in Struthers, Ohio, a small town near the better known Youngstown, Ohio. A member of Verhovay since early youth, Charlie has served as publicity agent, secretary, part time organizer, vice president and now controller of Branch 383, Buffalo, New York. Charlie finished “in the money” in several Verhovay membership campaigns and contests. He represented the “Buffalo Híradó” (Buffalo Herald), Hungarian publication, at the 1943 Verhovay Convention. He was delegate to the Verhovay Conventions in 1947 and 1951, serving as 2d vice chairman at the former and taking a very active part of the floor of the latter. Charlie has been columnist and reresentative of the “Buffalo Híradó” for the past 14 years. He is a former contributor to the Verhovay Journal and is best remembered as a pioneer in proposing a name change for our organization. In this he met violent opposition and powerful support, his efforts rewarded when the 1951 Verhovay Convention voted in favor of a new name. The aforementioned activities and others nave made Charles A, Young well acquainted with the majority of the Hungarians and Verhovay members in Buffalo. Under the leadership of this staunch Verhovayan, Branch 383 of Buffalo was represented at most of the national Verhovay bowling tournaments. At one time the female bowlers of Branch 383 finished second place at a Verhovay tourney. The intercity bowling events with Detroit and Youngstown are still happy memories to the 383’ers who participated, and behind all these was energetic Verhovay-conscious Charlie Young. Before going into business Charlie worked for Dupont DeNemours Rayon, Inc. for 21 years in the Experimental Department. While with the company he served as president of the Dupont Athletic Association, chairman of the Social Committee, lieutenant of the Fire Company, and was secretary of the Dupont Rayon Workers Independent Union until his resignation to enter private business. With an average of 158, Charlie was also on the team winning the Plant League Championship. Charlie’s pet sport is boxing — and for obvious reasons. At 17 he started competition in this field and continued for 8 years. After his second year he won the Niagara District Middle Weight Championship which he held for several years. He fought in intercity bouts at Cleveland, Youngstown,-' Alliance, Detroit and Pittsburgh, also in Madison Square Garden for the New York State Championships. His record: 136 amateur bouts, winning 80 by K.O.s, losing only 12. After hanging up his gloves, Charlie married the lovely Miss Helen Vereb of North Tonawanda, New York on June 9, 1934. They have two children, Jean Annette, 19, and Judy Ann, 12. The Youngs invite all the Verhovay members and their friends, while visiting or going thru Buffalo on their way to the 1954 National Verhovay Fellowship Days, to visit them at their restaurant. Charles A. Young, who prefers to be called Charlie, hopes that some day Buffalo, with its spacious bowling alleys and scenic beauty — and near-by Niagara Falls — will be Verhovay’s bowling host. John Lesinski, M. C. Branch 443, Detroit, Michigan, recently added a distinguished member to its roster. Congressman John Lesinski of the 16th District, Michigan, is a member of the House of Representatives, Washington, D. C. WELCOME INTO OUR RANKS, REPRESENTATIVE LESINSKI!
