1954 / Verhovay Journal

TEAM EVENTS to be ROLLED FIRST—SATURDAY, MAY 29 PAGE 6 Verhovay Journal March 17, 1954 FORTY AND EIGHT NEW YORK’S NEWS AND VIEWS As we look out at the front lawn and see the foliage of the bulbs so high and the maple tree full of buds, we can’t help thinking that now that Spring is almost here, May, bringing with it the tournament, is not too far behind either. Like the new green leaves pushing their way up, so we here at Branch 48 are forging ahead with our plans for the great event. We too are full of budding ideas and hope to blossom forth with the best yet! It’s very heartening to read the Verhovay Journal and see all the preparations being made for the tournament. I almost keeled over when I saw Columbus, Ohio was sending 15 teams to N. Y.! Somehow We always thought New York had the biggest everything’s! Just shows to go you! And — isn’t it wonderful news to hear that Jenő Bartal shall be playing for the Budapest Dance? I can remember him from my young and single days when dancing was an almost nightly affair instead of the annual event it is now, and boy! he sure can play!! He must be heard to be appreciated. The committee is to be congratulated on being able to obtain him for the gala event. We are sure you will all agree with us when you hear his orchestra. On reading of all the teams coming to our fair city, it was nice to know that our friends from New Brunswick will join the festivities. If. there is a friendlier group than those fellahs, we’ve yet to meet them ... The last time we were out to New Brunswick for a match game (and believe me I can’t remember the scores) we ate and drank like the proverbial Armenians. It was a rainy Sunday, but w’hat a time we had indoors! The orchestra was “out of this world” and, before the evening was over, so were we! The káposzta we had at the dinner was simply delicious and if the cooks were observing, they must have gone to bed real happy souls that night because we never stopped eating. Beal chow hounds! Messrs. Simon, Hill, Teddy, Lou Kish are the members who come to mind at the moment. There were others who took uá under their wings too, and although we are rather late in saying so: Thanks for the WONDERFUL DAY. We hope you have as much fun here as we did there. A1 Ancsanyi, our genial V. P., Chuck Fabian, A1 Ibos, our president, and Victor Horn spend one nite a Week soliciting boosters, doing a splendid job. Keep up the good work, fellows. The album committee is right proud of you! However, it has turned into a rather wet proposition as we hear it — seems that when said gentlemen approach these various establishments they treat one another to liquid refreshments, and When one stops to think of all the places to go to, yiyiyi! (Make mine Scotch and Soda, please.) Welcome back to Steve Nemeth who for awhile was on our sick list. Glad to know you’re back with»the team; you were sorely missed. Stay with us, now, boy. It was quite a shock to hear our former Vice President and his wife were in a rather serious automobile accident and that Katie had to be hospitalized. George suffered two broken fingers and, believe me, the team was relieved to know it wasn’t his right hand! Hope this finds you both well on the, recovery road. Did we mention that one of the popular rendezvous on LONG ISLAND CITY is JOF RONGO’S MERMAID BAR? Please boys, if indulge you must, patronize your fellow team mate and Verhovay member! Mr. Joe Toma tells me we have three teams all set for the tournament. He is hard at work on a fourth. Come on boys, call Joe, tell him you want to join in the fun. There is still a little time left. The Charlie Grubens have a nice new green Ford, Helen does right Well at the wheel. Their girls are growing into real beauties, and if I could I’d hold time back a little until my boys could catch up to them! Incidentally, as I write this, I have one eye on the television set, as our Richard is appearing on the Merry Mailman Program all decked out in his best HOPPY outfit, and darned if he wasn’t the one chosen to be spoken too! There’ll be no holding that cowboy tonight! (His loot, by the way, was a jar of Bosco and Fluff.) On February 28 our bowlers played the first game of a Home and Home match game with the Catholic War Veterans of the U.SJA., Commander John Barry Post #67, at Sonny Fox’s. In spite of some excellent wood toppling by “Old Reliable” Chuck Fabian, our boys managed to drop the match. An old friend, Julius Galya, was on the Vets’ teams, as was Walter Huthansel with top scores, but we are happy to say that these boys are joining forces with us and shall be in the tournament. Welcome boys. It’s a pleasure to have you on our side. We do hope to do better at the next match game, however. The boys playing this Sunday were — A1 Ancsanyi, Joe Toma, A1 Ibos, Joe Rongo, Chuck Fabian, Johnny Partmann, add to these the following and you have our teams so far — Bjll Celio, Ernest Nemeth, Steve Nemeth, Frank Rico, John Pollack, Thomas Plunkett, John Paukovits, Julius Galya, Walter Huthansel. It was nice to see Mrs. Lucas back in print again — had wondered why we hadn’t seen her articles in the Journal of late. I want to thank all the nice people who called and wrote to me, commenting on the first column in ten years. (A decade sounds to old to me, downright ancient.) Thanks to the editor for those kind words; they were much appreciated! I hope to see you all at the next meeting, and should anyone have any news to tell me or comments to make, please contact me. This is your column. I’m only here to write it up, so please don’t hesitate. I’m open to all ideas and will greatly appreciate any help extended to me. Fraternally, MARGE NEMETH 199-13 26th Avenue Bayside, L. I. N. Y. JOIN and SERVE ...answer the call! MAESTRO JENO BARTAL Jeno Bartal and his famous orchestra, gracing the finest entertainment spots in New York City, will with their superb music entrance the Verhovay members and guests at** the Victory Dinner and Night of Budapest Dance May 29, the social high light of the 1954 National Verhovay Fellowship Days and 11th Annual National Verhovay Bowling Tournament. Jeno Bartal hails May 29—30, 1954, calling it the deepest expression of Verhovay brotherhood. BRANCH 15 — CHICAGO, ILL — SENTINEL By: Andrew Janovics, Vice-President On the surface it seems things are calm at our branch this month, but actually, unseen, there is a hustle and bustle going on: The entertainment committee is very busy with its plans for the May dance and June picnic. Tickets for the dance are now available. Other necessary orders are being attended to and everything is being done to make it as pleasant for our guests as we can. Lest you forget, this is for our BIG MAY DANCE, May 15, in Chicago’s Beautiful Lions Ballroom (Den) at 4306 West North Avenue, starting at 8 P.M. Music will be played by SEPESSY’S orchestra. Another very busy force is our bowling committee, and, it reports a bowling contract was signed for the 1954-1955 season for brand new alleys just being completed. These alleys will have automatic pin setters and are in the vicinity of Belmont and Kedzie Avenues. We will have 16 teams and the bowling league will bowl Friday evenings at 9 P. M. In the near future there will be a match game between our Lakeview and Gateway Bowlers. After the bowling a party will be held in a hall at Lakeview Recreation. At this writing the plans are still incomplete, bpt if you are interested do get in touch with a member of the committee handling this and the details will be given you. The members of this committee are George Reedy, Paul Hetzel, Tony Barango and Joseph Hodits. Plans for the 11th Annual National Verhovay Bowling Tournament at New York, May 29—30, are going great. At this writing Branch 15 will enter 5 men and 1 woman teams. Best of luck to these bowlers. May they come home with the trophies. Please note that we have discontinued sending out postal cards announcing our meetings as by now we believe all of you know that our meetings are held REGULARLY the third SUNDAY of every month in the Blue Room of the Lions Building, 4306 West North Avenue, at 3 P.M. Do attend all the meetings. A picture card post marked Miami, Florida, from Mr. and Mrs. Anton Lachman, briefly tells how much they are enjoying themselves. Congratulations to Chicago’s Southside branches on their merger. We know they will find (as we did) that there is strength in unity. SUCCESS TO THEM. The manager of this newly merged branch is Mr. Frank Kajdi. I met Mr. and Mrs. Kajdi at Bi-anch 96’s Valentine Dance (which by the way I thoroughly enjoyed) and I found the Kajdi’s to be a very nice couple from whom great accomplishments are awaited. We are sorry that, now that the merger is completed, Elmer Charles, Field Assistant to the President, had to return to Pittsburgh. We hope to see him back in Chicago before too long. We look forward to much success and great accomplishments from our sister branch. May Verhovay ever prosper!
