Verhovay BRANCH 15 — CHICAGO, ILL. — SENTINEL By: Andrew Janovics, \ ice-President Our Christmas Party went off as scheduled. We had a large Christmas tree and the Revelers (our own young (people’s group) presented a short play, '“T’was the Night Before Christmas.” in the midst of which Santa Claus appeared with his loud, jjolly laugh. The youngsters just loved him, to this day remark as to what a booming, jolly laugh he had. The Iplay was presented by Paul Mate, Steve Mate and Rita Lux. We thank them and Santa for their kind efforts to put this over. After the •play Santa called the children to him for their candy-filled stockings Und apples, and the mad scramble was on to see who could get there first, However, everything was pretty orderly. Then the movies were shown. After the movies free hot dogs, ham isandwiches, coffee and pop were served. Other drinks were available at a nominal cost. Thanks to you all who helped in any way at this event, trimming and untrimming- the tree, tit the kitchen and bars, with the loud speaker, and in all other ways, with laure's to our piano player. Also [thanks to Antal Skolny and his accompanist. who played Christmas und folk songs for the assembled group at the bar. Fodor, Jr., Treasurer Joseph Hodits, Comptroller Louise Janovics, Recording Sec’y. George Sabik, Joseph Exner, Sr., William Feirfar, Jr., Auditors. Congratulations, fellow officers, and welcome to the new members on this list. We hope to be able to show great progress during 1954 and know you will all do your best as in the past. We are very sorry that Paul Hetzel and Matt Balog declined to accept their nominations. We are sorry to lose them from our midst as they did a grand job during 1953, but trust they will still do as much as their time permits to help us with our entertainment committee 'and at our various affairs. To Paul Hetzel, Matt Balog and Steve Ehas, we wish to say a hearty big “Thank You” for your work during the past year. Please note! Our MEETINGS, th? third Sunday of every month, are held in the Blue Room of the Lions Building, 4306 West North Avenue during the year 1954, at 3:00 P. M. SHARP. It has come to our attention that Miss Irene Simon, President of the Revelers, will be wed in February to George Stulz. Best of luck to them. Well, gals, another eligible male must be wiped off your list. He is none other than Paul Mate, who during *1116 Christmas holidays presented lovely Marion Cervenka with a diamond ring for their betrothal. It is with a sad and heavy heart that we report the death, December 25, Christmas Day, of William Feifar, Sr., who had been residing in Michigan for the last few years. His funeral was held Monday, December 28, at Buchanan, Michigan. Mr. Feifar was for many, many years active in Verhovay affairs and held several branch positions, among them treasurer for a great number of years. He was a fine man and was well liked by all. He was so interested in Verhovay that he took the trouble to come from his home in Michigan ito the first meeting of Branch 15. He enjoyed the progress Verhovay made and always wished us success. Besides members of his family, among the Branch 15 members present were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rak, Mr .and Mrs. Joseph Exner, Mr. and Mrs. Louis C. Fodor Jr.. Anton Lachman, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Taylor and my wife and I. John Nagy, of Branch 132, South Bend, Autón Lachman, Ernest Taylor and I had the honor of being among the pall bear- Vrs. I am sorry I did net get a chance to get the names of the other two men. To his dear wife, Mrs. William Feifar, Sr., and his three sons, WILLIAM, Jr., and his family; Frank and his family; and Theodore and his family; we extend our sincere sympathy. His memory shall remain with us always. MAY HE REST IN PEACE. James Fodor, our first place bowler, proudly reports that there is a new edition to his family. Gary Stephen Fodor, his third chid, was born Thursday, December 3, 1953, at St. Anne's Hospital. He weighed 5 lbs. 101 ozs. Gary has an older brother and sister who are very .proud of their new baby brother. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Fodor upon this great occasion. The Frank Feifar’s of Michigan are stork-ancicipating within the month. On the sick list we have Joseph Pszota, Mrs. Joseph Kadon, Mrs. Margaret Kunstadt, Paul Tarr, Sr., Andrew Tork and Andrew Vancso. A speedy recovery to them all. A great big WELCOME to our new members: Jack Zubor, Paul S. Dudás, Irene Lefton, Joseph Putz, Joan Steinkellner, Julius Steinkellner, Ellen S. Heinrich, Steve Leonardo, Mrs. Steve Leonardo, Joel L. Whited, Joan Bonit'ert, Steve Stefely, Keith Allen Olsen, Patricia Stefe'.y, Mrs. Joyce Stefeiy, Joseph Boka, Steve Hubay, Margaret Cieso, und Casey Dana Gilfoy, who is tho 15th grandchild of the Senior Andrew Risko’s who proudly state that all 15 are Verhovay members. Congratulations to members Dan Igyarto and John Fodor on their bowling accomplishments. Dan just missed a 300 game when a stubborn No. 4 pin failed to topple, leaving him with a 299 total. As a result, he had a 643 series for his Hetzel Tavern team. His team mate, John Fodor, came through with 257-232-669 to share individual honors. We hope fyou fellows will bowl with us next Year so that you can give James Fodor, Jos Sailor, Paul Hetzel, Ernie Taylor and the other high bowlers some stiff competition. They surely would love that! That winds up our news for this j month. Among your New Year’s resolutions, I hope you made one to [ (the effect that during 1954 you will j secure at least one new member for | our branch. Next month, I shall have news for you regarding our dance of May 15, which promises to be a big- gala affair. Journal January 20, 1954 THE FERRET SEZ News from Detroit " T T" ~~ What nicer way is there to start a New Year than to feel that a minor talent is needed and can be used by a very fine group of people? That is exactly what happened to your old Ferret who has been out of circulation so long that her vocabulary will have to be taken out of moth balls, and dusted off, before using! Here 1 was, minding my own business, and wondering what sort of year 1954 will become, when the telephone rang- and a vaguely familiar voice asked for your Ferret. So here we are, Andy, and you nice people of Branch 36 in Detroit, Michigan. I don’t know just how it will sound, but the facts will be presented as they were given to me . . ATTENTION — BR. 36 AND ALL BRANCHES The officers and members of Br. 36, particularly the men’s and women’s bowling teams, would like to invite all Detroit branches, members and their friends to a disznótoros supper (something about pork) on Saturday evening, February 27th at 7:30 p.m., to be held in the former Verhovay Home, 8005 West Jefferson Avenue. More particulars, such as price, will be given in the next issue of the Journal. District Manager Stephen Lukacs, and members of the men’s bowling teams, will have tickets available, perhaps before this issue goes to press. Let’s have a large crowd and start the ball rolling socially in the Detroit area. (Between you and me, and the ever silent flag pole, Verhovay activities have been pretty dead around here, and your Ferret feels it’s about time to find out how old friends are doing.) The members of the men’s bowling team are Captain Andrew Konkoly, Joe Lorincz, Frank “Skeets” Novak, Andy Bobrocky, John Paycheck and Joe Moss. The women will be listed in the next issue, just as soon as the gals know who will be the participants. Gee, folks, it’ll be nice to see the old gang again and have the sort of fun we used to enjoy way back when our families were mostly younglings rather than the near-grown men and women they are now. The bowling teams will also have a short meeting on January 16th, with bowling, and fun at someone’s home afterwards. To top off Verhovay activities in Detroit, a tentative plan is being made by Branch 36 to hold a Children’s Day on ^Sunday, March 28th. More details on this as plans develop. (Looks like your old reporter will have to attend Branch 36 meeting to find out what’s going on.) * * * * Regardless of the problems the majority of people may have ha-d in the past year, I myself feel that it’s been a grand year, and this in spits of the fact that our son “Skipper” left the good old U.S.A. in April for the Far East. “Skip” was stationed in North Japan, went to Sasesbo, Kyushu in south Japan in June to participate in the Armed Services A 1 Far-East Track Meet, and is now stationed on that dot of land, Okinawa. The Lucas Family, and one particular bit of femininity from Branch .36, are eagerly awaiting his return home in July. Our Larry will enter Cass Technical High School in February, with big plans to enter U. of M. in three years. Luke and our “Frosty” dog and your Ferret are “kicking around.” In Branch 429, we have our latest Horvath grandchild, the 15th, bom to sister Mary and Steve Horvath. Young Paul brings the total to eight boys and seven girls . . . WOW! * ¥ * Doggone it, I have forgotten how to write and present news. You Detroit and Dearborn Verhovay members had better call me and let me know what’s doing-. Happ£ New Year to all. —By JOLÁN LUCAS Your Health From the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania and the Allegheny County Medical Society The man is a fresh air fanatic. Regardless of how cold it is outside, he insists on opening the window of the bedroom. “Let in some fresh air,” he says. Warm air can be just as fresh as cold air. When sleeping, the beat-regulating mechanism of the body is less active, and there is no point in sleeping cold. The best temperature for the bedrom is a comfortable one.
