1954 / Verhovay Journal

Enjoy Memorial Day Week End In New York City Verhovay Journal VOL. XXXVII. JANUARY 20, 1954 51 NO. 1. New York Tournament Tribute To All Eastern Branches The 11th Annual National Verhovay Ten Pin Bowling Tournament, swarded to New York City, will in reality be a special event not only because of its locale in the most fabulous city of the world but also because the thousands of Verhovay members in the East will receive just recognition for their loyalty and many years of service to Verhovay. National President John Bencze, we have learned, shall officially proclaim .this year’s National Verhovay Fellowship Days also as Eastern Verhovay Recognition Days. We will properly acknowledge not only the worthy achievements of the members of Branch 48, New York, New York, but in addition the similar accomplishments of the members of all Verhovay branches in the East. The Middle West, the W'est and the Southern branches, honored in the past, will this year trek to the East to celebrate with their fellow members of that heavily Verhovay-populated area. The eyes of the entire Verhovay membership will be directed toward that section of the country which gave birth to Verhovay — the East. It was at Hazleton, Pennsylvania that our society was organized in 188(5 by a group of 13 coal miners, and it is fit ting that in the year 1954, 68 years later, as many as possible Verhovayans should go East on May 29-30, 1954 to participate in Verhovay’s greatest yearly event to be held in New York City. The 11th Annual National Verhovay Bowling Tournament and National Verhovay Fellowship Days of 1954 will obviously be the biggest Verhovay affair ever staged. New York and other Eastern Verhovay centers are even now planning how to assure the great success of this coming titanic venture. They have been given advance warning by the National Executive Tournament Committee that members in the thousands from over all the nation will assemble in New York City to take part in the as yet most promising of Verhovay national fraternal and social endeavors. As for the New Yorkers thpmselves, well, President Albert Ibos and Field Supervisor Joseph Toma of Branchi 48 are so confident of the interest their own townsmen have in the 1954 rally that they are sure two Gothamites will attend the big event for every member from another part of the country. Such sentiment is indeed t'- 3 graphic expression of the attitude the New Yorkers have in regard to the big Verhovay event. It is fully the intention of the New York Tournament and Fellowship Days Committee that every one of the 2,500 (!) dinner places be sold well in •advance of the Victory Dinner to be held Saturday night, May 29, 1954. It is ouite understandable that thé Hotel Commodore needs to know in ample time the number of Victory Dinner guests, and the cooperation of the members can not be too strongly urged. Imagine 2,500 Verhovayans seated together at this dinner — truly the acme of fraternalism. BOWLING TEAMS NOW MAKING PREPARATIONS Many letters have been received at the Home Office from branch •>*> *<rcrs and team captains inquiring about the rules and regulations of the forthcoming tournament. Many of the branches are planning to send additional teams to this year’s bowling contests, particularly the branches in the Eastern part of the country. While it is true that some of the teams in other sections have brought up the great distance they must travel from their horne« to New York, they are nevertheless going to take part in the New York tournament, for, in their fairness, they are aware of the fact that New York and the other Eastern points have many times, since the advent of our tournaments, traveled equally as far in the westerly direction; also, it is the first time that the East will be this signally honored, and the teams of the other areas would not deny the East the great tribute it will receive in just a few months. It is quite heart-warming to know that new Verhovay branches will be represented in the tournament. The Eastern end of the country has many special Verhovry bowling leagues or teams. These will contribute teams to vie for victory. The National Executive Tournament Committee, when making arrangements for a suitable bowling establishment, definitely kept in mind that there would be at least 100 teams entering the 11th Annual National Verhovay Bowling Tournament, consequently the Committee reserved Freddie Fitzsimmon’s Bowling Lanes, 120 Empire Boulevard, Brook yn, New Vork. There are 40 alleys all in a row on the ground level capable of handling the 100 teams. Of course certain arrangements have been made with the i luagement to assure a smoothly operating successful tournament. Despite the increased costs of bowling in the New York area, and other expenses normal in this section, the National Executive Tournament Committee is leaving the bowling entry fees as they have been for the past few years. The difference will be borne by the Association. ATTENTION TEAM CAPTAINS Applications will be ready for distribution within a few weeks. Team captains will report to their branch managers the number of applications needed so that these may be ordered by the branch managers from the Tournament Administrator, National Auditor John Sabo, Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, 436 Fourth Avenue, Pittsburgh 19, Pa. The team (Continued on page 5) THE MEMBERSHIP DRIVE IS ON NAMED FOR VETERAN DIRECTORS In 1952 it was the Beneze-Revesz New Membership Campaign. Result: SUCCESS. In 1953 it was the Szalanczy-Sabo New Membership Campaign. Result: SUCCESS. Now in 1954 it is the MACKER-VIZI NEM MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN. Result: We don’t know yet but we feel certain it will match the two previous membership drives BECAUSE Verhovayans are INTERESTED in the WELFARE of their Association and are THANKFUL for having the two stalwart Verhovay Directors, Vice President Julius Macker and Director Louis Vizi, FAITHFUL GO-GETTING Verhovay servants. Our experience has shown us that the new membership campaigns, which we inaugurated in 1952 to precede the Bowling Tournaments and Fellowship Days, and which conclude for tabulation at the yearly national Verhovay gathering, are timed most appropriately when the social and fraternal spirit best permeates the membership, thus advantageously' affecting our organization in the enrolling of new members, the life guarantee of our society. The Tournament, the Fellowship Days, the Membership Drive — aT blend perfectly in the harmony of a bigger and greater Verhovay, surely the goal of every member of this organization founded on nobility of purpose and ever striving to maintain the high ideals upon which rests the foundation of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. Any member conversant with Verhovay knows the names MACKER and VIZI as the cognomens of two outstanding Verhovay members, leaders and officers. JULIUS MACKER and LOUIS VIZI have for years stood forth as human symbols of VERHOVAY FAITHFULNESS and VERHOVAY SERVICE. Both Vice President Julius Macker, of the Detroit, Michigan area, and Director Louis Vizi, of the Scalp Level, Pennsylvania area, are serving their fourth consecutive terms as members of the Board of Directors. This honor is theirs only because of LOYALTY, HARD WORK and TRUE LEADERSHIP. Years ago they proved their worth in their own local areas to such an extent that it was inevitable that national Verhovay attention would be focused on them in time, and that time of national recognition came an appreciable number of years ago. The names of Julius Macker and Louis Vizi are genuinely inspiring guides to our latest membership drive. Their value is showing by the numerous applications for membership increasingly coming in. Yes, the names Macker and Vizi were not picked at random, but because they carried real Verhovay value and because they merit the honor given them. Every adult member should enthusiastically assist our field workers in the securing of new membership during the MACKER-VIZI NEW MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN -— first, for the love of Verhovay itself, second, to honor the Verhovay Directors whose names we are privileged to use for this latest membership drive. Julius Macker and Louis Vizi, in tneir humility, would advise you to secure new members only for the sake of Verhovay itself, caring nothing about honors for themselves. There are always prospects. Become active in this campaign by recommending prospective members to your branch managers, district managers Vnid field supervisors. They will follow your reccmendations through, and our beloved Association will prosper immensely in a wealth of new members. Every adult member is a part of this 1954 membership endeavor. Team work with the field workers will be richly rewarding to our membership ranks. Work together and win together. Vice President Julius Macker and Director Louis Vizi regard their name-lending to the 1954 membership drive as a tribute to their persons. verhovay feels equally honored to have the privilege of using their Verhovay-tried names.
