PAGE 6 Verhovay Journal November 18, 1954 Verhovay Watchtower By JOSEPH J. HORVATH — Cleveland, Ohio We like the selection of the bowling committee of New York City. It’s hbout time the East received this recognition. I predicted that there will be more than a hundred teams. Good luck. We offer our best wishes to Mayor1 Thomas A. Burke, who was selected by Governor Frank J. Lausche as Senator from Ohio to the United States Senate. Congratulations to Gay B. Banes, Esq. upon his promotion to Verhovay General Counsel. We saw in our last month Journal that Branch 27 of Dayton, Ohio was represented at the Ohio Verhovay.1 bowling tournament. Yep, we muffed that one. (Editor’s Note: Occasionally mistakes sneak past our watchful eyes, as in this case of Branch 27, TOLEDO, Ohio identified wdth Dayton, Ohio. We really did not attempt to move Branch 27 from TOLEDO to Dayton!) Carl (Hercules) Pertz informs us that son Carl Jr. will be married sometime in the latter part of May, and under the circumstances Senior will be unable to make the Verhovay national bowling tournament next year at New York City. We’ll miss him. Betty Knapp, the genial Sports Club secretary, slipped and fell down at her place of employment. She was indisposed for several weeks. All we can say is: Betty, get off that diet of yours. Probably she was weak. Tony Pinter has retired from bowling. It’s the easy chair, slippers and (television this winter. We looked in on #366 bowling nite. We offer our congratulations to the branch for its splendid spirit. Our best wishes to Emery Készéi of Branch 45. We have heard thru the grape vine that the United Hungarian Societies of Cleveland, Ohio, thru their president Andy Do-no, may sponsor four scholarships in the near future for Hungarian boys or girls. A commendable move, and our personal felicitations to Andy. We do hope he carries this idea through. Elmhurst College, take notice of the above statement. Branch 14 grape festival. About 600 attended. Steve Barry was the major domo. He organized the parade — about 30 cars — which was very good. He also arranged to have pictures taken of the dancers, helped out at the refreshment stand, which was under the supervision of Frank Oravis and John Knapp. Of course, the kitchen was taken care of by Mrs. Ihász, Mrs. Krabasz, Mrs. Kadar, Mrs. Isak, Mrs. Wolf and Mrs. Ladanyi. We met Amos Barry, brother of our Steve, who said that his son Jimmy, 8 years old, was a Branch 14 member. He stated that any Verhovay member who wants a good deal in an automobile of the DeSoto or Plymouth class would receive his personal attention at Ed Couden, Inc., 11810 Superior Ave., Cleveland. Margaret Olah, the dancing teacher, had her charges in tip-top shape. At first we thought that professionals were performing. George Bubonic was entertaining the musicians with his renditions on accordion and horn and everyone enjoyed the playing. The Sports Club meeting was well attended, with excellent oratory by President Piscalko, Anthony Pinter, John Knapp and several others. The Christmas party has been set for Saturday, December 12. No gifts this (time. Thank goodness. Many Verhovay celebrities were [present at the Cuyahoga County Hungarian Democratic Club’s 20th year (anniversary, among them Joseph Szalay, Sig Kadar, Peter G. Shaw, Joseph Krupansky, Coloman Kolozsvary, Charles Kautsky, Frank Pokorny Sr., who was the first president, Judge Joseph Stearns, Anthony Celebresse, candidate for mayor, Valentine Nagy, •Judge Louis Pe,trash, Louis Varga, manager of Settler’s Tavern and our caterer for the occasion (best dinner served Continental style), August Bessenyei, police prosecutor, Mr. and Mrs. Gall, Henry- Speeth,, county commissioner, and many others. It was Ian excellent affair in the Hungarian Verhovay manner. The Verhovay Ladies’ League at Ithie home is going full blast. All kinds of male rooters, also plenty of advice which the women take good naturedly. The dean of the lady bowlers, Mrs. Gall, was having trouble with her spares . . . Only left-handed bowler is Mrs. Helen Oravis. .. The one who travels the farthest is Mrs. Catherine Torda, to Willoughby, Ohio ... The rest of the ladies have excellent hooks and comeback on their bowling ball. In closing may I quote about “Things to Remember:” the value of time, the necessity of perseverance, (the pleasure of working, the worth of character, the dignity of simplicity, the power of kindness, the wisdom of saving, the virtue of patience, the job of originality, the beauty of cheerfulness, the influence of example, and the obligation of duty. As explained in the letter each member received, each member is requested to recommend at least one new member. By talking to your friends, neighbors, or fellow workers it is very simple to recommend a member through the forms that were also included in the letter. .Since it will take a little time to process these forms, each member is urged to turn in his recommendations as soon as possible.
