VERHOVAY TOURNAMENT AND FELLOWSHIP DAYS AWARDED TO NEW YORK CITY May 28-29, 1954 (Saturday and Sunday) Dates of Big Annual Event. The most fabulous city in the world will open its doors to thousands of Yerhovay members when the next bowling tournament and fellowship days arc staged over the 1954 Memorial Day week end. NEW YORK! NEW YORK!! NEW YORK!!! This is the first occasion for a Verhovay tournament to go East. This is big' news and good news for all members of our fine society, for we shall see a sensational trek of team members and other members, plus non-member guests, many of whom will be making their first visit to the largest city, the richest city, the most exciting city in the world. The Board of Directors deserves full credit in the awarding of the tournament and fellowship days to New York City, Verhovay center where we have thousands of members in the very active Branch 48. Again, the selection of New York City was solely the decision of the Board of Directors (the Tournament Committee presented facts on several possible sites, without recommendation, as it wished to be neutral in the best interests of all concerned). It goes without a doubt that the Board of Directors made a very wise selection, and the bowlers and non-bowlers will receive this news with great favor and acclaim. Certainly it is high time for our many members, who yearly have participated in our tournaments, usually held in the Midwest, to have the opportunity to go East, especially to such a city as New York, to meet and greet one another in a spirit that contributes much to the general good of a rapidly growing, service-conscious fraternal insurance society. VICE PRESIDENT J. MACKER AND DIRECTOR E. VIZI TO BE HONORED WITH MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN The Board of Directors, having chosen New York City as the site of our next national event, announced its intention to have anothher giant membership drive to tie in with the National Verhovay Fellowship Days. It very appropriately named the campaign the J. MACKER—-L. VIZI NEW MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN, in honor of one of our Vice Presidents, Julius Macker of Detroit, Michigan, and Director Louis Vizi, Scalp Level, Pennsylvania. These two men, in point of service, have been on the Board of Directors for the longest period, 14 years, and it is fitting that this fine record of service be given proper recognition. The campaign, directed by National President John Bencze with the assistance of Field Assistant to the President Elmer Charles, will begin immediately and will be directed in New York City and area by Field Supervisor Joseph Toma, who also manages Branch 48 of New York. It is the sincere wish of the Board of Directors that this campaign be as successful in gaining new members for our society as were the Bencze- Revesz and Szalanczy-Sabo New Membership Campaigns in the two previous years. Every member of our society ought to secure one Adult and one Juvenile member between now and the conclusion of the drive in May. The ',:iVi(poirtant thing is to get the new members as soon as possible. Every branch manager is ready and willing to help write up new prospects, and all the members should cooperate with trie branch managers toward that end. NATIONAL EXECUTIVE TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE VISITS NEW YORK After the selection of New York City by the Board of Directors, the sanie body authorized the National Executive Tournament Committee to go to Now York to make hotel, bowling and other arrangements. The National Executive Tournament Committee, made up this year of Vice Presidenet Dr. Andrew Kovács of Cleveland, Ohio, its Chairman; Director Albert Ibos of New York, New Y'ork, and National Auditor John Sabo, Tournament Administrator, visited New York November 6 and 7. • The Committee soon realized that it would be a momentous task making a selection of a hotel for headquarters and a bowling establishment for the contests. The New York Convention Bureau did a fine job of alerting the hotels which showed an interest in our coming tournament, and many of the hotels contacted the Tournament Administrator. The task of picking a suitable bowling establishment, however, is a harder one. and at this writing no definite arrangements have been made with the bowling houses. It is almost definite, however, that contracts will be signed very shortly, if not already by the time this issue appears, not only with the bowling places but also with the hotel management. The thrill of seeing New York, the fun of walking along Broadway, the exciten :nt of milling with the throngs at Times Square, the gay carnival spirit of the entertainment district, the many world-famous night clubs, the stars of radio, television and theater, the fantastic subway system — these things fjhall be experienced by the members who will make this out-of-thisworld trip to New York City. The National Executive Tournament Committee, as it went from one hotel to another, from one bowling center to another, could not but help sense the pride that will go with the grand Verhovay gathering in New York. Verhovay has indeed selected a site that will give complete travel satisfaction to all the members who will take part at the New York City Verhovay big event. The National Executive Tournament Committee is keeping in mind the extra-curricular fun of the members when they (Continued on Pag-e 3) ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS Payment of monthly dues for December, 1953 should be made as early as possible in December to give your branch manager an opportunity to forward his December, 1953 monthly report in time to reach the Home Office no later than December 31, 1953. (All branch managers must mail their monthly reports and money no later than December 28 in order that these reach the Home Office by December 31.) On December 31 the Home Office will officially close its records for the year 1953, so that work may be started on the very detailed and exacting new Annual Statement and Valuation Report required by the various Insurance Departments. This year we must work with an entirely new accounting statement, thus extra time will be required for the preparation and completion of these state reports. Y'our cooperation will be appreciated very much in making early monthly payments in December. HOME OFFICE Auditing Department Election of Branch Officers In December • The month of December will be a very important one for our society in as much as all our branches shall in December elect their officers for 1954. Each branch must elect a president, comptroller and an auditing committee consisting of at least two members. (The branch manager is appointed by the Horne Office, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors.) It is VEF.Y IMPORTANT that all the branches have their elections in December, and every branch, regardless of whether it is managed by a full time manager or part time one, MUST ELECT the officers stated above in the first sentence of the second paragraph. In addition to the offices that must be filled, each branch has the right to create additional offices according to local needs, but only the officers required by the By-Laws are responsible to the Association, and their duties CAN NOT be transferred to holders of offices created for local branch need. Every Verhovay member OUGHT to make it a point to attend the regular December meeting of his her branch to eiect the men and the women best qualified for branch leadership. Elect those who shall best serve the branch and the Association.
