Rhinitis is an inflammation of the membrane lining of the nose, the membrane -becoming swollen, with watery secretion causing running nose. Rhinitis may be due to an infection such as causes the common cold, or it may be due to an allergy from pollens, foods, or drugs. The sinuses are air cavities in the cheek bones, back of the nose, at the base of the brain behind upper part of the nose, and in the frontal bones in the lower part of the forehead. One purpose of the, sinuses is to decrease the weight of the bones in the cranium, but chiefly they provide space through which the incoming air may circulate and become warm and moisted. ^ The lining , of the sinuses is continuous with the lining of the nose. In most colds the sinuses are inuo’ved. Treatment of sinusities has l'ecently included use of the proper antibiotic, with penicillin favored in most cases. Your Health From the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania and the Allegheny County Medical Society A new drug developed by two Pittsburgh physicians has just been announced which promises to be effective in acute and chronic sinusitis and both infectious and allergic rhinitis. The new drug is said to produce prompt and lasting shrinkage of the nasal mucosa without secondary congestion. Acting as an antibiotic, it clears the nose of trouble-causing germs and sécretions of pus. The new drug so far has produced no undesirable effects other than slight stinging sensation in some case. Sinusitis and rhinitis relief is increasing.---------'-£■? § ---------DO YOU KNOW? — Flouridation of water is now. being processed in Pittsburgh, Wilkinsburg, Ford City, Brookville, Ebensburg, Easton and Natrona and permits for thus treating public water have been issued to five other communities, including Philadelphia. —1 One child in 16,000 is born with a defect ca led funnel chest, in which the breastbone and rib cartilages are pulled inward by failure of the diaphragm to develop normally. w eXrTF TO REMIND OTHERS Accident and health benefits paid by life insurance companies in the United States in 1952 totaled $887,- 763,000 with $58,019,000 being paid in Pennsylvania, the third largest amount in any state.-11-Potatoes boiled whole in their skins (retains practically all of their vitamin C and a high degree of the other nutrients present while paring before boiling decreases several of the values as much as 30 per cent. —i r— Eskimos, because of their isolation, are often relatively free from widespread infectious diseases such as inf.uenza, measles, and the common cold. —1\— Deaths from heart disease are onethird higher among males.-u-Many persons do not go to high places as they suffer from dinophobia, a morbid fear of becoming dizzy.
