June 17, 1953. Verhovay Journal PAGE 13 POWER CITY NEWS SPRINGDALE, PA. AND VICINITY by Edward A. Mattie Branch 296 Another tournament has come to a close. And needless to say, everyone had a very enjoyable time. Brandi; 296 was well represented at this tournament. For the first time three teams from the local branch attended the event. The men’s No. 1 team consisted mostly of bowlers who had attended previous tournaments. Members on this team were Ed Mattie, Joe Balia, Nick Koricich and James Borrasso. Gabe Nemeth served as a substitute due to the illness of Louis Antal, Jr. who couldn’t make the trip because of illness. The men’s No. 2 team was made up of Steve Üveges, James Zigarrella, Louis Bodnar, Walter Wesoloski and Jim McPherson. The women bowlers who participated in the tournament were Mrs. Walter Wesoloski, Mrs. Steve Üveges, Mrs. James McPherson, Mrs. Louis Wislie, Mrs. Helen Stull, Mrs. Louis Bodnar and Miss Anna Marie Fintor. Also attending the tournament was Mrs. Joseph Balia. The trip was made in four cars. Unfortunately, no trophies were won. But many of the men and women, who for the first time participated in a tournament, made a very good showing. Mrs., Louis Wislie and Mrs. Helen Stull placed high in the doubles event. From last reports this was about fourth or fifth place. So all in all, the women did very well. As for the men, better luck next year! The remark was made a number of times as to why isn’t the tournament held earlier in the year, at, least near the first of May. I think that an earlier date would be much more suitable. The ' Memorial Day' week end is too long after the closing of the bowling leagues. Most of the bowling establishments in this area are closed. With an earlier date, cooler weather could be enjoyed. After all, bowling is not a warm weather sport. MOTHER’S DAY On Sunday, May 10, after the; regular branch meeting, the mothers were honored with a program. The mothers were each given a corsage of spring flowers. Father Nyest of St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church gave a prayer and said a few words to the mothers. The women were then served with a luncheon. MRS. BAUMAN FETED On Sunday, May 17, a group of fifty friends and well-wishers surprised Mrs. George Bauman, Sr. with a chicken supper. The event was held by the Ladies’ Auxiliary of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church. The affair was a combination of birthday party and a testimonial to Mrs. Bauman’s faithful work for the past ten years as secretary and for her ardent interest in church work. The honored guest was deeply moved by the many tokens of expression given to her by the group. I might also add that Mrs. Bauman, along with her church work, has for years been an active member of Branch 296. Her active interest and devotion to duty has indeed been admirable. It is the hope of everyone that Mrs. Bauman will be with us for a; good many years to come, and that she will continue being an active! part of her church and branch work. PITTSBURGHERS IN LONE STAR STATE Elmer Borovich and Julius Toth, Jr., members of Branch 34, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, are in technical training with the armed forces in Texas. The cousins are well-known back home, which is the Hazelwood district of Pittsburgh.
