1 February 18, 1953 Verhovay Journal PAGE 9 INTRODUCING — New President of Branch 27 Toledo Stephen Ivancso, Jr. with his family Stephen Ivancso, Jr. is one of the main guarantees that the 1953 tournament will be at least as successful as the most successful tournament to date —. perhaps it will even surpass all other tournaments! A BRIEF SKETCH OF PRESIDENT IVANCSO: He was born in the county of Abauj, Hungary in 1920 from where he migrated to this country when he was three years old. He later returned there and attended school in Hungary, However, when he was 16 years old, he was already taking an active part in Hungarian organizations’ activities in Johnstown, Pa. At the present time, he is in the grocery business with his father in Toledo., The above picture shows the new president with his wife Mary and three of their four children. The latest arrival is just a few weeks old. Stephen Ivancso is a great sportsman. In the summer he is a baseball umpire. The picture shows some of the bowling trophies which he has won. His two brothers, Frank and John, are outstanding bowlers .too, who will also be participants ‘in the tournament. With the great enthusiasm shown by Stephen Ivancso, Jr., Toledo Br. 27 President, the hard work of Julius Vallay, District Manager of V;he Toledo District the 1953 TOURNAMENT IS BOUND TO BE A SUCCESS! BE SURE TO ATTEND! ■ ■II ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■! Verhovay Watchtower j By JOS, J. HORVATH — Cleveland, O. February is a short month but rich in history — Lincoln’s and Washington’s birth days . . . ground hog 'day . . , winter about half over . . . looking forward tó the month of March and spring ... St. Patrick’s Day .' . St. Joseph’s Day . . . Kossuth Celebration Day . . . robins, blue birds, cardinals, etc. . . . plants and grass starting to wake up and grow . . . about this time nature gives the: go sign — grow, yield and multiply, to make humanity happy.. Congratulations to Leslie J. Dus upon his marriage. Stephen Gabocz may receive a federal appointment such as assistant U.S. district attorney. Nick Yahas Jr. is home from Cincinnati, Ohio indefinitely. We heard that Steve Barry became the secretary of the entertainment committee1 . . . also heard that Steven A. Jakab, local mortician, may back a Verhovay tournament team from Cleveland. William Kastan and his wife Dorothy are worried. Why? Because Bill may have to go back into service. Yep, it looks like NO NEW Pontiac for the Kastans. Mary Karnya is expecting about, Easter. She has a pet name. Frank O ravis, calls her “Lucy” of T.V. fame. Met the former Betty Toth of 366 and her children, three of them. The joy of being married. They live in Parma, Ohio.’ Mr. and Mrs. Matyas, local eatery moguls, recently returned from Florida. Nice tan. But they said thte nights were pretty chilly. 'We met a lot of Verhovay members at the annual Rákóczi #62 Society hurka and kolbász dinner. It was a little sad because their president, John Mayer, had died. But Denis Szász and his wife carried on. WTe Were introduced to many people including a Miss Haydu, who, we thought, was extremely nice. Mrs. Szász went out of her way to make our stay most pleasant. Thanks loads, Rákóczi #62, for a good time. Frank Oravis and John Knapp went to Erie, Pa. to buy a boat and motor — imagine in the middle of winter on January 25th. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Oralik bowling in a mixed doubles league — with their daughter keeping score. # We heard that Gene Toth resigned as manager of St. John Hall . . . also heard that Steve Bresnayak became the new manager of the St. Stephen’s Club. The Verhovay Sports will hold a card party at Verhovay hall Satur- * day March 14th 1953. Tickets will be 50<j. Door prizes will be offered, cake and coffee will be served, and a program of music, perhaps singing too, will be on the agenda. We are inviting all you Verhovay members and your friends, former Sports Club members and their friends, and all Verhovay ans from the Cleveland area — the more the merrier — to participate. Yep, we want to buy that farm. And this is one way of getting money to do it. So give us your support, won’t you. We heard thru the underground that a “Sándor” and “József nap” will be held at the hall on Saturday March 21st. The Verhovay Sports Club has decided that two picnics would be enough for the club, dates to be announced later. Whenever the DPs hold a dance at Verhovay hall the place is jammed to the rafters. Whenever others try the same thing they are glad to meet; expenses. Why? Joseph Semock, our West side: Verhovayan, would like to see some hctivity among the younger element there. The Verhovay Sports Club Yearly Handicap Bowling Tournament (for members only) will he held the latter part of April or the middle of May. So members who come to the meetings and are active otherwise should get on the floor and talk sense not sentiments. I say let’s charge for the bowling and the party be on the house. There’s a lot of work connected with an organization, and it can’t live on sentiments alone. We must go forth and conquer friend and foe for the good of the Sports Club. Ex Animo, JOSEPH J. HORVATH c. o. Verhovay Home 8637 Buckeye Road Cleveland 4, Ohio Says Branch 14, “No Lull for us During 1953 Because of our Unusual Activity Last Year.” All members of this branch still remember vividly the events of last year -— of the fiftieth birthday celebration of Branch 14. After such a large event, a lull usually occurs, not only in social life and business, but everywhere. This is the law of averages. But not at Branch 14! This branch with its plans for 1953 will make the new year even more memorable than the jubilee year. The news of the reelection of everwilling Emery Kovács as branch president has already reached all our members. It is also noteworthy that in addition to the reelection of the “Old Guard” — consisting of Jacob Torda, John Bozsvay, Joseph Hegedűs, and Sigismund Kadar — two young men have been added to the list of officers. Joseph Semetko became Vice President and Entertainment Chairman, while Stephen Barry was elected Controller of the Verhovay Home. These two young officers merited these honors because of their useful services in the past. Plans are being formulated for an OHIO VERHOVAY DAY to be held this year. Every effort will he made to insure our guests from all sections of Ohio a real good time. Several valuable prizes will be given away. In connection with the OHIO VERHOVAY DAY an OHIO BOWLING TOURNAMENT is also beingplanned. The branch members have already pledged some attractive prizes for the event. Naturally, the customary HARVEST FESTIVAL, plus the usual dances, card parties and suppers will be held this year, too. In addition to the above mentioned (mostly social) plans, there are two other very interesting and worthwhile plans. One concerns reviving the ever-popular cultural meeting’s with well-known lecturers. But perhaps even more important are plans for a branch bulletin. At first this will appear quarterly, later it is hoped, monthly. This homeprinted bulletin will be mailed to each member. The object: To bring members closer together in fraternalism. The bulletin will not just print cut-and-dry announcements but also interesting events and incidents in 'the lives of the Branch 14 members. The Branch Officers, through the Verhovay Journal, ask thieir members to submit newsworthy articles to the Branch Office at 8637 Buckeye Road, Cleveland, Ohio. The best items will be published and prizes offered for the most outstanding. Brief essays by professionals will; also be given space. THE VERHOVAY JOURNAL CONGRATULATES BRANCH 14 FOR UNDERTAKING THIS NEW EXPERIMENT AND IN THE NAME OF ALL THE MEMBERSHIP WISHES THEM GREAT SUCCESS!
