1953 / Verhovay Journal

VOL. XXXVI. JANUARY 21, 1953 No. 1. THE NEW YEAR REMINDS US THAT TOURNAMENT TIME IS NEARING Count ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR. It didn’t take long to complete that count, did it? Well, ONE, TWO THREE, FOUR in this article is in reference to the remaining number of months, plus a certain number of days, left before the windup of the TENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT and the close of the SZALANCZY-SZABO NEW MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN. Given just fleeting thought, four more months hiay seem rather long. But that time will go into the realm of memory so fast that the giant yearly Verhovay event will be upon the scene much sooner than we now think. Of course the Verhovay' bowlers who will participate in the games are realizing, even now, how little time remains for the perfection of their skill before the national sports contest. The National Executive Tournament Committee, composed of Vice-President Dr. Andrew Kovács, Director Richard J. Phillips, Director Gay B. Banes, and National Auditor John Sabo, who are responsible to the Board of Directors for the successful administration of the affairs of the annual tournaments, recognize, probably belter than any other interested group or individual, the grave importance of the ELEMENT OF TIME as pertaining to our bowling tournaments. That is why the tasks of these enthusiastic and energetic Verhovay leaders in connection with our annual event ean not be called seasonal. Their particular assignment is not continual —but CONTINUOUS. When the National Executive Tournament Committee writes finis to one tournament they barely breathe another supply of life-giving air before beginning the prodigious job of planning the next, tournament. So, Dear Readers, don’t delay whatever you must do now to assure your participation at the TENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT and the SZALANCZY-SZABO NEW MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN May 30-31 — in just a few months. If you have not already begun to lay aside a few dollars for the event, do so from now on to make it financially easier for yourselves. And if you work for others, as most of us do, it would be wise now to inform your working superiors that you want time off for the gi'eat Verhovay dual event. Follow the example of the National Executive Tournament Committee and you won’t be unprepared for the NATIONAL VERHOVAY FELLOWSHIP DAYS. Last month we made a sincere attempt to acquaint you with Lne principals and the details of one half of the NATIONAL VERHOVAY FELLOWSHIP DAYS, the SZALANCZY-SZABO NEW MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN. Now let us see what the other half, the TENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT, is accomplishing by way of branch and team preparation, etc. Let us start off logically, by seeing what the host branch of the next tournament, Branch 27, Toledo, Ohio, is doing. Branch 27 has organized two men’s and two women’s teamsin anticipation of the next Verhovay bowling tournament which will honor* industrial and cultural Toledo. The branch has decided 'to form a permanent sports club to carry out ilhe new sportsl program of Branch 27. and this club will cooperate with the branch officers in assisting the National Executive Tournament Committee. Credit for this new program of Branch 27 is due largely to District Manager Julius Vallay, Branch President Steve Takacs, and to Joseph Poes and Andrew' Rasi. These farseeing men have stimulated Branch 27 with their new ideas and forward outlook. Other branches planning to enter, new teams in the tournament are Branch 8, Johnstown, Pa., which should do well under young branch manager Steve Petruska, who attended last year’s, tournament in Columbus and went back home with the fire of zealousness for next year’s tournament. Branch 89, Homestead. Pa. has indicated that there are possibilities the branch will enter a men’s team. And Branch 482, Beckley, W. Va., led by itsj (Continued on page 8) Toledo Room of the Commodore Perry The Commodore Perry of Toledo is a hotel of many beautiful rooms. The Toledo Room above will be used for our meetings during the Tenth Annual Bowling Tournament of Verhovay May 30-31. Note the gorgeou- murals^ a thrill both to artist and layman alike.
