MERRY CHRISTMAS - HAPPY NEW YEAR VOL. XXXV. ,*s^> 51 DECEMBER 17, 1952 No. 12. The Real Christmas The real Christmas Spirit which enters our hearts today should dwell there in permanence so that every day of the year find us faithful followers of the Christ of Bethlehem. Christmas, much to our sorrow, somehow or other, has lost much of its true meaning when viewed in the light of what it means to some of our people today! Our Christmas of today is sadly commercialized to the point that it is sometimes difficult for some of us, and especially for the children of some of us, to interpret the real meaning of this glorious day. Weeks before Christmas we busy ourselves with the arduous task of gift shopping; days before the eve of Christmas we make detailed plans for the feasting and merriment we want for ourselves and our friends and relatives. Millions of greeting cards are put into the mail to herald our greetings. Yes, we spend millions and millions of dollars to celebrate this one day. Yet when this day comes, jiow many there are among us who do not know, or treat with alarming indifference, the reaLmeaning of Christmas!! If we are to be better followers of Christ we must put first things first on Christmas Day and every day of the year. Gifts which we give or gifts which we receive should not be substituted for the real meaning of Christmas. Our children should know Christmas first as Christ’s Day, then as the day of Santa Claus. This day of rejoicing should first find us in the House of God of our choice; feasting and the opening of gifts should come only thereafter. The spirit which engulfs us on this heavenly day should not end at midnight but should carry us through each succeeding day of the year. Let us never remove Christ from Christmas— the practice on the part of many to refer to Christmas as X-mas is indeed disheartening. Bethlehem’s bright Star is still gleaming in the still of the night. Let us find ourselves traveling the lighted way to Christ our Lord. On this day when Jesus, our Saviour, came from heaven s? above, let us pray to be better Christians, to be good neighs' bors, to mean it when we say, “Peace on earth, good will to men.” Christ is born! Rejoice!! The Verhovay Journal and the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association sincerely wishes everyone a joyful Christmas which will keep Christ in our hearts not only on Christmas Day but every day of the years to come. —JOHN BENCZE, National President; COLOMAN RÉVÉSZ, National Secretary; JOHN SABO, National Auditor; JOHN SZALANCZY, Nätional Treasurer; JULIUS MACKER, Vice-President; DR. Age-old, yet ever new each Yuletide, His message inspires all the world to strive toward those ideals of good will which were heralded by a star in the East nearly two thousand years ago . . . Szalanczy-Szabo New Membership Campaign Tied in With TENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT The yearly national Verhovay bowling tournaments held in late spring are a tremendous undertaking. They require a vast amount of groundwork and preparation and every effort must be taken to assure their success. Lethargy can not be brooked before or during these wide-reaching events, or even after their fulfillment. Last year a new angle was tried — and succeeded well. The Bencze-Revesz Anniversary New Membership Campaign was inaugurated as the forerunner of the Ninth Annual National Bowling Tournament, coupled with the big bowling contest, and both associated events wound up known as the NATIONAL VERHOVAY FELLOWSHIP DAYS, a beautiful designation indeed, with compliments to the one who thought up this title. Now in close connection and genuine harmony we have the 3ZALANCZY-SZABÓ NEW MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN to give push and drive to the 1953 TENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT. Also, we have this campaign to honor two fine officers, National Treasurer John Szalanczy and National Auditor John Sabo. It is wholly fitting that since we gave such honors last year to National President John Bencze and National Secretary Coloman Revesz we should repeat the same for the 1953 new membership feampaign honored officers. Of course this was the express desire of National President Bencze and National Secretary Revesz. The Board of Directors at its September last meetingapproved the SZALANCZY-SZABO NEW MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN and authorized the membership drive to run from OCTOBER 1, 1952 to MAY 31, 1953, culminating at the TENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT in Toledo, Ohio. A while back National President Bencze and National Secretary Revesz announced the opening of the new member(Continued on page 2)
