Patients sometimes consult the doctor about moles because they fear cancer. * * * It is true that a mole may turn into a cancer, although the chances are rare. * * * The mole that gives no trouble is usually ignored, except for cosmetic reasons. * * * It may vary in color from pale tan to jet black or blue-black with all tints in between. A mole is a growth or tumor on the surface of the skin due to an excess of cells in the area, with a relatively greater excess of pigment-bearing cells. • * * * Cells comprising a mole collect melanin, the pigment that gives color to hair and skin. * * * The average person has five or ten and some have thousands of moles, some of which are flush with the skin surface while others are raised and warty. A mole may he almost microscopic or it may cover half of the body, as a birthmark. * # * Moles may be removed simply, quickly and painlessly by surgery. * # * A mole that increases in size, or bleeds readily, or becomes irritated or inflamed may become cancerous. * # * ( Such a mole should be removed at once.
