VOL. XXXV. APRIL 16, 1952 NO- 4 FRANK J. LAUSCHE, GOVERNOR OF OHIO, TO ADDRESS VERHOVAY MEMBERS MAY 31 The Governor of the State of Ohio, Frank J. Lausche, in response to an official invitation from the National Tournament Executive Committee and the Columbus Tournament Committee has informed the committees that he will be most happy to spend an evening with our Verhovay members on May 31. Governor Lausche, a Verhovayan himself, is a member of Branch 14, Cleveland, Ohio. He is one of the best liked public officials in the country, a man of courage and conviction and action. Time and time again he has demonstrated his popularity with the people of the most beautiful state in the union by his smashing victories at the polis. It is no secret that our Verhovay friend and member will again seek the highest office in the state, and it is no secret that the Verhovay members residing in Ohio appreciate his willingness to continue serving them. It is no wonder that the National Tournament Executive Committee has sought to invite Governor Lausche to our Ninth Annual National Ten Pin Bowling Tournament. This organization has been noted for its democratic ,and progressive leaders who have always administered in the best interests of the common men and women who make up the majority of our membership. Likewise Governor Lausche, an American of foreign extraction, has always acted democratically and thought progressively for the good of the masses in the thriving State of Ohio. We members of Verhovay are proud that this great leader is a loyal, member of our Association. We shall be very happy when the Governor1 appears at the tournament to make it possible for the thousands of Verhovay members not only from Ohio but from over all the country to meet and talk with him. The National Tournament Executive Committee made up of Dr. Andrew Kovács, Vice-President from Cleveland, Ohio, Director Richard J. Phillips of Detroit, Michigan. Director Gay B. Banes, Esq. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and John Sabo, National Auditor of the Association, together with David George and Louis Miller, Manager and President, respectively, Branch 129, Columbus, Ohio, will meet with the Governor on Wednesday. April 23 ft 11:00 A. M. The National Tournament Executive Committee will be in town several days to go over all plans with the Columbus officials and committee members. Everything possible will be done to assure a very successful tournament. 85 TEAMS TO TAKE PART IN TOURNAMENT The Tournament Administrator has received and has accepted applications for 85 bowling teams. This tournament will be one of the largest ever held. Last year there were 92 teams enrolled. However, Branch 132 of South «'■end, Indiana sent 25 teams to the tournament because of the fact that they were so.close to last year’s tournament city, Chicago. This year there is a more even distribution of teams, and there are new faces that will be seen. Branch 48 of New York, Branch 525 of Los - Angeles and Branch 137 of Racine, Wisconsin have entered teams in the tournament for the first time. Of the 85 teams to participate 24 teams will be made up of women. Mr. 1C. R. Diliinger, Tournament Secretary, and his crew of bowling technicians,, will have a difficult task of setting up a schedule this year because we are limited to 30 alleys — last year we had 50 alleys for 92 teams, whereas this jear we have 85 teams. In order to assure completion of the bowling schedule on time and to permit everyone to have a pleasant time at the .social events, the doubles and singles will be rolled off on Friday, while the team events will be scheduled for Saturday. Team captains will receive! bowling schedules and prize lists just as soon as these are completed. We shall do our best to have these schedules and prize lists in the hands of thq team captains four weeks prior to the tournament. The reservations are to be made directly to Hotel Deshler- Wallick, Reservation Department, Columbus, Ohio. The committee has arranged such a grand program of social events and entertainment to take place after the bowling on Friday and Saturday that no one should miss any one of the events. Every member has the right — in fact we hereby OFFICIALLY invito each and every member — to attend our National Verhovay Fellowship Days. The registration fee for the entire affair — two days — is only $5.00 per person. The registration fee for Saturday night — May 31 — is $3.50 per person. It is suggested, however, that those who possibly can do so register for the entire affair, because the committee would feel sorry for anyone who would miss even the smallest part of this great event For instance, the slight fee of $5.00 will entitle each member to attend: Friday night “Night of Budapest” nightclub dance in the Hotel Deshler- Wallick New Ionian night club room which will be turned over to us exclusively. The music for this affair will be furnished by the nation’s best Hungarian-American dance orchestra—Ziggy Bela from Detroit, Michigan, hired right out of the nationally-famoUs night club and restaurant known es the “Hungarian Village of Detroit.” (The National Executive Committee is spending a fortune for the services of this fine dance orchestra because it believes in nothing but the best for our members.) On this night will be selected the 1952 Verhovay Beauty Queen who will reign during the tournament. She will befittingly be crowned and awarded a beautiful loving-cup. Two other beauties will be selected who will assist the beauty queen winner. On Saturday night the spacious and magnificent Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Deshler-Wallick will be ours. At 5 p. m. we shall serve a very delicious buffet dinner. After dinner National President John Bencze and National Secretary Coloman Revesz will conduct mass initiation ceremonies for all new members written up in the Columbus-Dayton area during the Bencze-Revesz New Membership Anniversary Campaign. After this the bowling tournament winners will be announced and beautiful trophies will be awarded to the champions. Other surprise entertainment of a high-class calibre will also be provided. And Ziggy Bela’s dance orchestra will again play fo* dancing till the wee hours. Who would want to miss a program such as that outlined briefly above. It is requested that registration be made as soon as possible, but no later than May 19, 1952, because it will be necessary for the Committee to make plans with the hotel pertaining to buffet-dinner reservations, etc. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR BRANCH MANAGER THIS VERY DAY TO REGISTER FOR THE AFFAIR.
