1952 / Verhovay Journal
Febnary 2o, 1952_____________________________Journal PAGE 1) POWER FAILURE BLACKS OUT VERHOVAY BUILDING Wednesday. February 6, 1952 will long toe remembered by the employees, officers and tenants of the Verhovay Building because of the extraordinary occurrence affecting Verhovay that day. At precisely 1:55 P. M. — we know because our electric clock stopped then — an underground explosion caused by excessive rain water seeping into the underground conduits short circuited the main electric cable connected to the Verhovay Building. A manhole cover across the street was blown about six feet into the air, narrowly missing a woman pedestrian. Strangely the cover almost fell back into place. The darkness that enveloped the interiors of the Home Office structure brought memories of the disastrous 1936 floods and the 1946 city-wide power strike. A rescue squad led by National Treasurer Szalanczy and National Auditor Sabo freed a passenger who was trapped in the self-operating elevator. The j passenger was an employee of the Keystone Adjustment Corporation located on the third floor. His “big boss,” the president of the Keystone Adjustment Corporation, happened along and poked fun at him good naturedly. Lighted candles were placed at intervals on the stairways and emergency flashlights were used to prevent any accidents. When the light company officials and repair men surveyed the extent of the damage and notified the Verhovay officers that there would be no electric power until 10 o’clock that evening, the employees were dismissed about 3:45. The other companies in the building followed suit. It has been officially confirmed by the authorities that the sudden and unexpected power failure and the birthday of Albert Jozik, an employee of the Home Office, both events occuring on this same day, were merely coincidental and that neither had anything to do ; with the other. 1* ~" 1 ---- ----- • ■■ ........ -■> --DA WFP PITYMFW^ * t m vtliK lii i PUjWo SPRINGDALE, PA. ANDVICINITY by •j| Edward A. MattieBranch 296 Due to an early deadline, the “Power City News’’ did not appear in last month’s Journal. The column had been written, but it was sent to the Home Office too late to be published. Many thanks to all of you fine members who inquired about it. To bring- you up to date, I’ll give you a brief resume on the branch activities for the past two months. December was one of the most active months at the Home in years. During this time, four orchestras appeared, two suppers, the Children’s Christmas Party, the election, and the New Year’s Eve Party were held. Arthur Nagy and his Hungarian orchestra appeared on the 1st and 29th, “The Polka Kings'’ played on the 15th and Irene Grill and her orchestra played on New Year’s Eve. On the 15th, the very icy roads Und cold weather caused poor attendance, but on the other three nights the Home was filled to capacity each time. The chicken supper held December 1st was very successful. The pork supper held December 29th <and 31st proved to be very popular also. Many thanks to all of those members who made these affairs, ft success. CHRISTMAS PARTY In the November edition of the. Journal, it was announced that the party would be held on December 22nd. Because of circumstance, however, it was necessary to have the party on the 15th. In view of the changed date and the extremely poor weather conditions, the party ; was well attended. The children were shown movies and were entertained by a magician. Santa Claus, jin the person of Bill Wanamaker, presented a gift bag to the children as- they were leaving. I might also pdd that Bill played the part very weil. ELECTIOl/ The election of officers was held during the regular meeting in December. At this election the complete slate of officers could not be filled. It was then necessary to fill the three remaining- vacancies during the January meeting. For the first time in the history of Branch 296, women were elected as officers. Though their elections seemed to be somewhat of a novelty, I am sure khe membership could not have elected more capable women than Mrs. Emma Beganyi and Miss Ann Marie Fintor. Branch officers for 1952 are Stephen Üveges, Sr.,president; Joseph Wislie, Sr., Vice-president; Elmer Charles, branch manager; Mrs. Emma Beganyi, treasurer; Edward Mattie, secretary; Andrew Ross, Sr., comptroller; John Farkas, Joseph Barta and William Mattie, auditors. Trustees are August Veres, Julius Telegdy, John P. Balia, Bill Wanamaker, George Charles, Walter Wesoloski and Anna Marie Fintor. Thanks and a vote of appreciation iis due to retiring president, Louis A. Antal, Jr., and to the retiring treasurer, Alex Kozma, for their work and interest during the past Year. It was nice working with you. COMING EVENTS On the 12th of January, “The Polka Kings” played at the Home, and on the 26th Arthur Nagy and His Hungarian orchestra was engaged. Unless there is an unexpected change in plans, these two orchestras will continue to play at the Home. It has been the policy of the branch to engage an orchestra for the second and fourth Saturday of each month in the same order as mentioned above. LADIES AUXILIARY At the December meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary, an entirely new slate of officers was elected for the coming year. Elected were Mrs. Mary Wesoloski, president; M.rs. Mary McPherson, vice-president; Mrs. Helen Dudzinski, seccretary; and Mrs. Joseph Fintor, treasurer. Best wishes go to the newly elected officers, and as their new president has said, “I hope that all the new officers will take a greät interest in their new positions and make a great success of it for th^ coming year.” With the Ladies Auxiliary under new and younger leadership, we still should not forget the old offieers who have guided the auxiliary for a great number of years. Some of these women are up in years and have worked as officers since the auxiliary was first founded. The work and untiring efforts of thesewomen should certainly be appreciated and a generous thank you is in order. It is sincerely hoped that 'the retiring officers will continue to give their interest and assistance to the new officers as they have done in the past.
