REGULAR CONVENTION OF THE VERHOVAY FRATERNAL INSURANCE ASSOCIATION taken in the Ball Room of Hotel Roosevelt in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Monday, September 10, 1951, and the following days. 1. ) The Convention opened with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, rendered by DeLoris Randall vocalist, daughter of branch-manager Blasius Csonka. 2. ) Then John Sabo National Auditor led the participants of the Convention in giving the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. *5.) National President John Bencze calls the convention to order at 9:15 a.m., and in his opening address welcomes the delegates urging them to diligently apply themselves to the great task before them. He briefly, outlines the work performed with unselfish devotion by the Board of Directors, the Auditing Committee and the national officers during the past, four years aad concluding’his brief address declares the Convention opened. 4.) The National Secretary announces that the Convention has 119 accredited members and that of these only the following have not appeared: Peter Toth from District 4/C, Phillips S. Houser from District 33 and James Lorencz from District 34. The report is unanimously adopted by the Convention. 5.) National President John Bencze then calls upon the members of the Convention to elect the chairman and the two vice-chairmen of the Convention. Speaking in behalf of Branch 52, Alexander Puskas moves that the Convention elect the present President and two Vice-Presidents as the chairman and the two vice-chairmen of the Convention. The motion is followed by a brief debate which is concluded when National President John Bencze announces that the delegates may nominate and elect whomever they prefer and in the event they should be elected, they will accept these offices since this is made possible by the provisions of the By-Laws. By open nominations the following are nominated for the convention chairmanship: John Bencze, John Bozsvay and Moses Bokor. Frank Radvany, Alexander Gyulay and Charles Kun do not accept the nomination. 6.) National President John Bencze appoints delegates Joseph Heck and Charles Smith as the Committee of Elections for taking and counting the ballots. 7. ) President announces that an absolute majority is required for the' election of the Chairman of the Convention and this is duly noted by the delegates. 8. ) The Committee of Elections reports that the result of the election is as follows: John Bencze ..................................................................i................ ....... 78 votes John Bozsvay ....................,...’7................................................................ 27 votes Moses Bokor .............................................................................................. 8 votes 9. ) Accordingly, National President John Bencze is the duly elected Chairman of the Convention and he expresses his thanks to the Convention for the confidence placed in him. 10. ) Chairman introduces to the Convention Mr. Oscar A. Kottler, Deputy Insurance Commissioner of the State of Pennsylvania who, in a brief address, calls the attention of the convention to the following: He reads from the reports on the examinations held in 1948 and 1951 the recommendations of the Insurance Department, the most important of which is set forth in the following paragraph: “It is recommended that the Association increase the contributions made by the members to the Expense Fund and/or charge its members specific contributions for the official organ, convention and charitable and relief funds or adopt some other feasible plan or combination of plans for the strengthening of the Expense Fund.” He further calls the attention of the Convention to the fact that societies much larger than the Verhovay conclude their conventions in three-four day's’ time and that it is impossible to understand why in the past conventions of the Verhovay have lasted longer than a week. He hopes that the present Convention, realizing that times have changed, will last no longer than a week at the most. At the same time he points out that the salaries paid to the -National Officers and the Home Office employees are not on par with the responsibilities with which they are burdened. In conclusion, he extends his best wishes for the continued success of the Association. 11. ) Vice-President Dr. Andrew Kovács expresses the sincere appreciation of the Convention to Mr. Kottler for his appearance and his impressive address. 12. ) Chairman, then, calls upon the delegates to nominate the two Vice-Chairmen, one of whom is to be elected from among the representatives of the older genei’ation and one from the younger generation. 13. ) Nominated for the Vice-Chairmanship from among the representatives of the older generation were the following: John Bozsvay, Joseph Marczis and Frank Radvany. Julius Macker, Charles Kun and Moses Bokor did notj accept the nominations. From among the representatives of the younger generation the following were nominated: ’ Gay B. Banes, Albert Ibos, Joseph Miller Jr., and Charles Young. Banes...................................................................................... 9 votes Accordingly, John Bozsvay' and Albert Ibos are the two vice-chairmen, duly elected by the delegates. 13/A.) Nominated for Recording Secretary were the following: Alexander Gyulay, Gay B. Banes, John P. Kelemen and Joseph Letenyei. Due to Alexander Gyulay, John P. Kelemen and Joseph Letenyei not having accepted the nominations, delegate Gay B. Banes has been unanimously elected Recording Secretary. 14. ) Chairman declares a 5 minute rest period. 15. ) Following the rest period, the next item of business is the presentation of the agenda of the Convention which is unanimously adopted by the members of the assembly. 16. ) The National Secretary announces that in keeping with its economizing program the Board of Directors decided to invite to this Convention only the representatives of the daily newspapers and one weekly newspaper. The “Amerikai Magyar Népszava” is represented by editor Eugene Szebedinszky, the Szabadság by editor Alexander Gondos and the Association of Weekly Newspapers by editor Coloman Kaldor. Representing their newspapers published in the east, Laslo Dienes and John Kerekes also appeared, but the Convention cannot grant them honoraria because such action would give offense to the other editors who have not been invited. 17. ) Chairman, then, introduces to the delegates George Szecskay, the Hungarian poet and author. 18. ) The National Secretary reads the Report of the Board of Directors (attached to those minutes) in conjunction with which the members of thei Convention pay a rising tribute to the memory of the late Albert B. Ari, Vice-President, Bertram Kun, director, and 1911 deceased adult members and 48 deceased juvenile members of (he Association. 19. ) Chairman adjourns the session at 12:55, until 2 p.m., for the lunch period. 20. ) National Secretary reads the messages of greetings received from the .following: Frank Földi, publisher of the ‘Iras-Otthon’ weekly newspaper of Chicago and a member of Branch 164; Stephen Botos, Manager, who wrote on behalf of Branch 192, Middletown, O.; John Szász, member of Branch 47, Canton, O.; William Feifar, member of Branch 164, Chicago, 111.: Anthony (Continued on page 7)
