April 18, 1951 Verhovay Journal PAGE 3 Joseph Marczis To Be Honored In Detroit One of the old-timers, wrio has spent 35 years in the service of the Verhovay in some official capacity, Mr. Joseph Marczis will receive the Degree of Illustrious Member, with the diploma and the gold service me­dal, at the 45th anniversary banquet of Branch 36, Detroit, Mich., to be held on Sunday, April 22, beginning at 1 p.ra., in the Parish Hall of the Hungarian Reformed Church, Dear­born anti Vanderbilt, Detroit. Mr. Marczis joined the Verhovay on November 8, 1915, as a charter­member of Branch 286, in Portage, Pa. Immediately upon the organiza­tion of the branch he was elected secretary-manager and served in this capacity until June, 1928. In the meantime, the branch honored its highly successful secretary-manager by delegating him to the National Convention in 1917 which, in turn, elected him to the Board of Directors. At the Convention of 1925 in Hazle­ton he was elected member of the auditing committee and in this ca­pacity he served several terms be­tween 1925 and 1939. In July, 1928, he moved to Detroit, and transferred to Branch 36 whose members elected him President in 1930. Since then he has served in various official capacities. At the pre­sent he is comptroller of Branch 36. Highly active in all branch activi­ties, he is deeply concerned about in­creasing the membership of the As­sociation and in this he is a constant source of encouragement to the Man-MICHIGAN OPERA CO. STAR TO APPEAR AT BRANCH 36 JUBILEE MISS ETHEL SOLMOSE Musical enjoyment of the highest j order is promised those attending the 45th Anniversary Banquet and Dance of Branch 36, Detroit, Mich., on Sun­day, April 22, in the banquet hall and auditorium of the Hungarian Re­formed Church at Dearborn and Van­derbilt. Star of the musical program is Miss Ethel Solmose, dramatic sop­rano of the Michigan Opera Company, whose appearance at the jubilee cele­bration is awaited with great expec­tation by the Verhovayans who love music, — which just about includes all Verhovayans. Branch 36 is to be commended for its great contribution to Verhovay’s cultural program by winning the consent of Miss Solmose to appear on the program of this event. Br. 36 District Manager To Be Honored At 25th Service Anniversary STEPHEN LUKACS, DIST. MGR. On Sunday, April 22, at the 45th Anniversary Banquet of Br. 36, to be' held at the banquet hall and audi­torium of the Hungarian Reformed Church at Dearborn and Vanderbilt, Stephen Lukacs, District Manager, holder of two Verhovay service awards, will be honored by the mem­bership of Branch 36 on the occasion of his 25th service anniversary as Manager of Verhovay’s largest branch. Mr. Lukacs came to this country in February, 1909, at the age of 17, from Homok in Ung county, Hungary. He joined the Verhovay at the Parent branch in Hazleton in 1910. Two years later he was elected auditor at Br. 199 in Red Hill. In 1914 he was elected delegate to the National Con­vention in Pasaic, N. J. Subsequently he was elected secretary-manager cf Branch 199. He served in this capacity until 1921 w'hen he left Red Hill. He came to Detroit in 1925 and transferred to Branch 36 which elected him secretary-manager in 1926. His uninterrupted service in this capacity until this day has been mainly responsible for the progress cf this branch which now is Verho­vay’s largest branch. Seven years ago he resigned from his job and became a full-time .field­­worker, in the capacity of District Manager, for the Association. Pre­vious to that, he attended the Na­tional Conventions of 1931, 1935 and 1939 as a delegate of Branch 36. The 1939 Convention elected him to the Auditing Committee and he was re­elected in 1943. He resigned the fol­lowing year when he entered full­time service with the Association. DANCING STAR OF ’49 TOURNAMENT TO APPEAR AT BRANCH 36 BANQUET Beautiful Vilma Gage who wooed the boys from the stage — and how successfully! — at the 1949 Bowling Tournament banquet in Detroit, will high­light the program of the 45th anniversary banquet of Branch 36, Verhovay's largest, on Sunday, April 22, in tlie auditorium of the Hungarian Reformed Church, Dearborn and Vanderbilt, in Detroit. Representatives of the Heme Office, the National Officers and Board of Directors will attend the gala affair at which music wifi be furnished by Joe Balint’s popular orchestra. Ethel Solmose, soprano of the Michigan Opera Company, Rudolph Piszker, violinist, Clara Elek, another noted dancer, a recital by Elizabeth Elő, ind others will be featured at the program, which will be followed by a dance. Admission will be $1.75 and for only the dance 75 cents. That Detroit Verho­vayans will attend in large numbers is understood, but. it is expected also that many Verhovay branches from near and far will delegate representatives to the anniversary celebration cf Verhovay’s largest branch. Don't miss .his grand event! BACK IN SERVICE Eugene G. Kolaeh Eugene George Kolaeh of Branch 45, Cleveland, 0., has again been called to the service of his country. Having served in the last fvar, he returned to his schooling and 'grad­­uated from Michigan State where he played football. After graduation lie taught at the Kellogg School n Hickory Corners, Michigan as well as coached their football team. It was gratifying to him to have his boys, The Hornets, win a 43 to 0 victory for him just before he left. Gene is now a Radio Operator Third Class, with the Navy. We join with all his many friends in wishing him the best of everything. Good luck Gene. The Home Office and the Board of Directors will be represented at the testimonial ceremonies honoring Mr. Lukacs. Trenton Commissioner Of Public Safety Runs For Re-election ANDREW J. DUCH A City Councilman, Commissioner of Public Safety, Andrew J. Duch, Trenton, N. J., a member of Branch 13 enjoys great popularity among the Hungarians in Trenton. He is a well­­known attorney, married, an active fraternalist, who runs for re-election on the Republican ticket. Verhovayans ;in Trenton are certain to support him because as a public servant he has made himself an admirable re­cord, is well liked and highly re­spected by all.
