Journal ______________________________________________________________________ February 21, 1951 DEADLINE MARCH 5 To start with what is most im­portant at the moment, the attention of all bowlers and especially captains is called to the rule requiring that' all Applications for Entry must be mailed before 12 A.M., MARCH 5, 1951. Strict observance to this rule, barring all exceptions, has been con­sistently demanded by the bowlers. So please realize that a good excuse will not make up for failure to mail the Application for Entry IN TIME. As to the forms and remittances that must ACCOMPANY the Application for Entry, please read the “Impor­tant Natice To All Bowlers Regard­ing Applications for 1951 Verhovay National Ten Pin Tournament,” re­printed for the convenience of. our bowlers elsewhere in this issue. The convenience of our bowlers is served further by the final reprint of the "Rules and Regulations” included in this issue. And remember, remit­tances accompanying the applications must be on money order or check, payable to “VERHOVAY SPORTS FUND,” so please do not designate payee as “Verhovay National Execu­tive Tournament Committee” or “Verhovay F. I. Association.” And please keep in mind further that applications must be accom­panied also by the BRANCH x\P­­PROVAL CERTIFICATE. Due to the necessarily early deadline date, team captains should attend the FEB­RUARY BRANCH MEETING and request approval of the application by the branch. The certificate must be signed by the Branch-President and the Branch Manager. Don’t forget either the AVERAGE SHEET which must be duly certified, together with the application blank, by the League Secretary. Don’t for­get to enter the ABC team card numbers on the application blanks. Last but not least, don’t fail to in­clude the REGISTRATION FORM which will be the “Open Sesame” to all social functions, banquet, dance, etc., for everyone listed on the blank, — provided, of course, that the $2.50 per person is included in the remit­tance in addition to the Entry Fefes. Don’t forget, keep in mind, remem­ber any and all of these requirements and to help our bowlers, all of it is reprinted, repeated and rehashed in this pre-Entry issue. TOURNAMENT COMMITTEES The National Executive Tourna­ment Committee is the standing com­mittee in charge of our Tournaments. Its members, elected by the Board of Directors, are Andrew Kovács, M.D., chairman, Vice-President of the Ver­hovay, and directors Richard Phillips and Mike Korosy. Their pictures with brief introductions appear in this is­sue. Tournament Administrator is Mr. John Sabo, National Auditor of the Verhovay, to whom all corres­pondence in regards to the Tourna­ment is to be addressed. This does not mean that the members of the Execu­tive Committee do not wish to re­ceive any mail. Their addreses are listed under their pictures for the convenience of correspondents. Then we have a local Tournament Committee, elected by the bowlers of branches 37-96-164-342-503 at a spe­cial meeting held On January 7, 1951 at Lakeview Recreation. The follow­ing have been elected to serve on this committee, known as ihe GENERAL COMMITTEE OF CHICAGO Mr. Frank Balogh, Chairman Mr* Louis Stefely, Co-Chairman Mr. George Reedy, Vice Chairman Miss Annette Reedy, Co-Vice Chairman Miss Marian Ritt, Secretary Mrs. Ethel Tricka, Co-Secretary At the same time, several sub­committees were formed. RECEPTION COMMITTEE Mr. Anton Lachman was elected Chairman and Mr. Matanyi Co- Chairman of this important commit­tee. Both of them are personally ac­quainted with most of the out-of-town bowlers who had attended past tour­naments. By electing these two gent­lemen, the Chicago branches made sure that the arrivals will be greeted by old friends. Other members will subsequently be appointed to serve on this Committee. TOURNAMENT ALBUM COMMITTEE One member of each branch was elected to serve on this committee whose task will be to lead and direct the great task of soliciting adver­tisements and sponsorship donations for the Tournament Album. They are: Mr. Steve Szekely, Sr., of Br. 37, Mr. Frank Tinich, Sr., of Br. 96, Mr. Andrew Janovics of Br. 164, Mr. Robert Reedy of Br. 342, Mr. Tony Barango of Br. 503. The bulk of the advertisements to appear in the Tournament Album will be procured through the efforts of this Committee. However, a spe­cial appeal to all Verhovay branches and members in other cities has been made by the Tournament Administra­tion by mail. This appeal, together with the price list of the ads appears elsewhere in this issue and those de­siring to insert an ad in the Tourna­ment Album are requested to look up this article for further information. PUBLICITY COMMITTEE This is the Committee in charge c.f providing publicity for Verhovay’s annual sports event in the Chicago newspapers as well as the Verhovay Journal. Elected to this Committee were: Mr. Frank Földi of Br. 164, Mr. James Radi, Chairman, Br. 503. The other members of this Com­mittee, representing branches 37, 96, and 342 will be appointed shortly. The impressive list of these com­mittees is token of a definite pro­mise: that branches 37, 96, 164, 342 and 503, our hosts in the City of the 8tli Annual Verhovay National Ten Pin Tournament, will do everything in their power to assure the success of this great enterprise and to provide, a home-like atmosphere of sincere welcome and friendliness for every bowler and spectator. The certainty of a sincere welcome surrounding our1 great fraternal holiday will make every bowler and every bowling fan look forward to this grand event. HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS Hotel Sherman, at Randolph and Clark Streets in downtown Chicago, a striking picture of which appears on the first page of this edition, one’ of the finest hotels in the entire country, «vili be Tournament Head­­quartersfcts 1450 rooms make it pos­sible toipccommodate all of the bowl­ers andpbut-of-town guests. In am probability, the presently ef­fective rates will be effective at the time of the Tournament. The rates are as follows: Single rooms: $4.95, $5.45, $6.45, $6.95, up to $8.45. Double bedrooms for two persons: $7.45, $7.95, up to $11.45. Twin bedded rooms: from $9.45 to $12.95. 2 rooms with connecting bath be­tween: for 2 persons $9.90, and $10.90. For 3 persons $12.40 and $13.40. For 4 persons: $14.90 and rooms at the rate of $2.00 per person. All rooms are with bath. RESERVATIONS Ail bowling teams will be furnished with a sufficient number ■ of reserva­tion cards. Visitors from other branches will be furnished reserva­tion cards by the Home Office upon request. The reservation cards are to be mailed directly to Hotel Sherman, Randolph and Clark Streets, Chicago, 111. The reservations will line duly acknowledged by the management. To assure everyone of the best possible accommodations, it is advisable to mail the reservation cards at the earliest possible date, well in ad­vance of the tournament. Hotel Sherman is a friendly place and all courtesies will be extended <o the participants of the tournament. REGISTRATION The registration desk will be- set up in the beautiful Emerald K®om on the Mezzanine floor. Upon checking in, all bowlers should register at the registration desk to receive their en­velopes containing the usual, tourna­ment tickets, informations, etc. To avoid confusion, please register im­mediately upon arrival. 815.90. Cots may be placed in many of the RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE 8TH ANNUAL VERHOVAY NATIONAL TEN-PIN TOURNAMENT — TO BE HELD MAY 5-6, 1951. — — Final reprint for the convenience of the bowling membership from the October 18, 1950 edition of the Journal. — No. 1 Each Verhovay bowling team shall consist of no more than 7 (seven) members, and entries will be accepted only from teams and indi viduals who are policyholders of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association with certificates dated prior to January 1, 1951. No. 2 Contestants must have team membership cards on their person and these cards must be shown to the Tournament Secretary. Participants lacking such cards are subject to disqualification. No. 3 No bowler may enter or participate more than once in a Five-Man, Two-Man or Individual event. No. 4 Participating teams as well as the bowling leagues of which they are members must be recognized and registered in accordance with the rules and regulations of the American Bowling Congress. The Women’s Division will be conducted according to the rules and regulations of the Women's International Bowling Congress. No. 5 In the case of the Men’s Division, the tournament handicap will be based upon 70% to 1,000 scratch to all teams, and will be limited to 3 (three) games of competition. No. 6 All teams desiring to enter competition will bowl under the team cards assigned to them by the ABC. All others desiring to enter in team competition must apply to the ABC for a team card as soon as possible, paying the fee of $3.50. No. 7 Applications for Tournament participation must be made under the name of one of the Verhovay branches. The application must FERST be approved by the branch members at a regular branch meeting. A certi­fied copy, signed by the Branch President and the Branch Manager, of such approval, based on the minutes of the meeting which approved the application for submission to the Executive Tournament Committee, must be forwarded to the Executive Tournament Committee in Pitts­burgh, Pa., AT THE SAME TIME the Tournament Entry Blank is filed. In cases where the branch sponsors more than one bowling team the teams will have the privilege of using another name in addition to “Verhovay” to distinguish one team from another. At the bowling tour­nament each bowler when bowling must prominently display on his or her person some suitable insignia indicating the Branch Number and the location of the branch which approved his team’s application blank for submission to the Executive Tournament Committee. No. 8 In the Women's Division the tournament handicap will be based upon 70% to 850 scratch to all teams, and will be limited to 3 (three) games of competition. No. 9 All teams desiring to enter competition in the Women’s Division must register as soon as possible with the W.I.B.C., and pay the customary registration fee. No. 10-(a) Application for tournament entry must be mailed before Midnight. March 5, 1951. Applications mailed after the deadline date will be re­jected. Applications must be certified BY THE TEAM CAPTAIN and THE LEAGUE SECRETARY. Applications must be accompanied by the designated entry fee. Remittances must be made by check or money order. Withdrawal after March 5, 1951 or Non-appearance of teams at the Tournament shall constitute forfeiture of entry fees. The Executive Tournament Committee reserves the right to reject any application. 10-(b) Each bowler must pay a registration fee of $2.50. This applies to any non-boWTCrs as well.
