Frank Balogh, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Balogh, used to be the Juvenile Order Branch Manager of the Branch and in this capacity has secured quite a number of new members for his branch. He inherited his interest ;.n Verhovay fraternalism from his father who has been Manager of Branch 503 for a number of years, securing an unusual number of new members while rendering conscientious service to the branch membership with an enthusiasm that made him one of the outstanding representatives of our Association. He voluntarily resigned in favor of Mr. Frank Nemeth”, District Manager, making it possible for the Association to establish an organizing district in Chicago, North Side, embracing branches 164, 342 and 503. His vast experience and willing help, is pf great assistance to Mr. Nemeth in his great task. Charles Stuparits, Jr., is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stuparits, staunch members of Branch 503. His father, the owner of the Stuparits Construction firm has been for many years an enthusiastic and generous supporter of Branch 503 in all of their fraternal activities. She was discovered by Horace Heidt when he was touring American air bases in Europe with his entiertainment troupe last spring. Commanding officer Col. Allen Reed of the Wiesbaden military post first recommended to him the beautiful blonde coloratura soprano who literally was singing for her suppW in GI service clubs in Germany. She auditioned for Heidt in Berlin. It was a dramate moment. Stagehands stopped moving scenery. Dancers stopped their practice steps in the wings. Band members put down their instruments. The other actors came out of their dressing rooms. When she finished, ihey burst into tremendous applause. Heidt started the wheels moving without delay. With the aid of the State Department and the IRO Sari arrived with her accompanist, Agnes Spetzler, on July 6th. She entered the Horace Heidt-Phillip Morris “Original Youth Opportunity Programkor. CBS, won several times, then lost She came back, however, to win the third-quarter finals with a thrilling performance before thousands in the Hollywood Bowl. Heidt signed her as a regular member of his traveling troupe. The San Francisco Opera Company engaged her for two performances of the “Magic Flute” and two months ago she was called Jrack for a return engagement. Movie producer Joe Pasternak offered her a contract. She also was wanted at Twentieth Century Fox. But Sari’s first desiije was to go on toúr with Heidt’s troupe and see the United States. On December 10, Sunday night, she appeared in the Grand Finals of the “Original Youth Opportunity Program” on the stage of the Uline Arena in Washington, D. C. 9,000 people were in the audience, not to speak of the millions hearing hqr golden voice over the radio. ' She almost won, judging from the tremendous applause accorded to her brilliant performance. But the $5,000 first prize went to two young Chicago teamsters, Rudy Varjú (also a Hungarian descendant?) and Lee Jenner, harmonica duo. Sari Barabas, however, still won $1,000. Not to speak of the fact that she is definitely “in.” How she likes America? “Wonderful. Wonderful. Wonderful. Can you imagine I traveled 5,000 miles and not a policeman stopped me to ask for my pass, my passport or identification papers. I didn’t have to change currency six times. There was a wonderful air of freedom, appreciated only by someone-who has lived in Europe all her life.” Welcome to America, Sari, and may good fortune smile upon you throughout what we know will be a great future! SMILES A judge was dining at the local restaurant and to a friend who was watching him from the other side of the room, he seemed to be taking an unusually long time. Finally he went over and asked what was taking him so long. The reply was, “I had to take four bowls of alphabet soup before I got to a period.” After a wild party, hubby weaved home, staggered up the walk and tried to navigate the front stairs. He fell and the bottle on his hip broke, cutting him. Realizing that first aid was necessary, he went softly to the1 bathroom mirror and backing up to his reflection made the necessary repairs. The next morning his wife accused him of overindulging. “Never mind the excuses: If you were sober last night, how did that adhesive tape get on the bathroom mirror ? ” Doctor: Has your husband taken Ihe medicine, a tablet before each meal and a small whiskey after?” Wife: Perhaps he’s behind a few tablets but he’s a month ahead on the whiskey!” Donnie: “What kind of things are ancestors ?” Dad: “I’m one and so is grandpa.” — Donnie: “Then why is it people go around bragging about them?”
