OFFICIAL COM MEM T \ DON’T SURRENDER YOUR OLD MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE The surrender of your membership certificate for its cash value is not to your best interests. The certificate which you have had all these years is worth its weight in gold. Years ago your monthly dues were a little less than they are today. Just as any other industry the insurance business has had high costs to contend with, so it is only natural that the cost of insurance purchased today is a little more than in the past. If you are among the fortunate ones who have lesser-costing certificates, hold on to it. You have an excellent investment, something which cannot be duplicated today, just as the 314% and 4% interest earnings which you once were able to get from your savings bank. If it is your intention to surrender your certificate just to replace it with another certificate keep in mind not only the loss mentioned above, but the fact that new insurance rates will be based on your present age. The older you are the more your monthly dues will be. Also, don’t forget that you run the risk of losing all insurance protection if you first surrender your certificate and then apply for other insurance. Since good health is not a guarantee to anyone, illness or accident may befall you when you least expect it. Your life may be insurable today, but it is possible that tomorrow you may be in the uninsurable class. Many people who surrender their certificates just to replace them with new ones overlook the fact that the new certificates for the first two years will be in the contestable period. Why replace your present certificate which is past the contestable period? Another disadvantage the member accepts when he gives up his certificate for a new one is the loss of his guaranteed nonforfeiture values. When he takes up the cash value of the old certificate he automatically voids the reduced paid-up life and the extended term insurance options. The- new certificate will not have such non-forfeiture values for the first three years. Furthermore, there is no loan value on a certificate before the first, three years. It certainly is a comfortable feeling to know that in case of financial emergency you can turn to your membership Certificate for help. The extended term insurance option mentioned in the previous paragraph is of the utmost advantage to the member. When a certificate has been in full force for at least three years it has an extended value. This means that in case you do not make a payment wthin the ninety-day grace period your insurance, for the full face amount less any indebtedness, is continued in force for a limited period. You do not run the risk of loss to your family in the event you did not pay your monthly dues within the grace period and you suddenly died. This one option alone is worth its weight in gold, and it has saved many a family from financial loss. A new certificate, for the first three years, could not offer you such temporary protection if you needed it. It is indeed unfortunate that people, despite all these disadvantages, still surrender their certificates. In most cases they are influenced by unscrupulous insurance solicitors, who for the sake of earning a commission on a new sale put them into unfavorable positions. For your own good beware of the insurance agent who would sell you his insurance just to replace the insurance you now have. Remember that the smooth talk he uses in advancing his arguments should not influence you into action until you have LAPSED MEMBERS — JUNE, 1950 SENIOR ORDER. 2 Delbo Emery; 21 Wargo Stephen J.; 27 Mihalec Mrs. Louis; 34 Gregovits Mary, Murányi Joseph, Varga Louis T.; 36 Folding John, Jr., Folding Matilda, Galloway Ralph; 45 Toth David, Vura James Robert; 48 Clark Herbert, Sr., Clark Mrs. Herb., Sr., Nemeth Ernest J., Zmenyak Vera; 76 Smith Charles, Sr.; 106 Drotar Paul J.; 129 Brekur George K., Burns Thomas C.; 132 Molnár Frank, Pajor John F., Rokop Elizabeth, Smith Charles F.; 138 Bodnar William J., Novotny John, Jr.; 159 Souch James P.; 197 Courtright June; 216 Legath Anton; 218 Balazs Betty; 236 Sipos Mrs. Andrew; 342 Hoblit Melby; 452 Baranowski Mrs. Wal.; 490 Meiszberg Robert J.; 537 Couch Wavalena; 548 Mocsary Frank. JOHN SABO, National Auditor. checked on his arguments with your branch manager or the Home Office. There are always two sides to a story and in fairness to those who have treated you so well hear the other side as well. In most cases you will keep your old membership certificate. If it is more insurance protection that you need, and most of us do, buy it. But don’t surrender your present insurance protection. If it is money you need, request a loan. But don’t give up your present certificate. If you are not satisfied with the class of insurance your certificate is based on, inquire about changing it to another class based on the same date of issue. But by no means surrender your present insurance. Your present membership certificate is worth its weight in gold. Keep it in full force.
