Brogley Memorial Trophy Tournament Administrator Gets Big Hand From Crowd Surrounding Stevie Balogh, wife of Captain Bela Balogh, proudly display­ing a reminder that this team has won the Verhovay National Championship for the second time, are the members of the Rose Ann Beauty Shop team of Branch 14, Cleveland, O. The picture appeared in the Sunday, May 28, edition of* the Youngstown Vindicator with the following caption: t “The name Balogh is becoming synonymous with bowling in northeastern Ohio. Men’s actual-pins team champions in the National Verhovay Tournament staged here this week end are the Clevelanders pictured above. They bcwli under the banner of Rose Ann Beauty Shop, are sponsored by Stevie Balogh, (center) who recently led Cleveland Fair Play Resurfacing to record-shattering performances here in the Ohio Women’s Tournament. The keglers had an actual 2836 in competition at Champion Recreation, and posted a 2920 handicap total.” THE TOURNAMENT STORY (Continued from page 5) A.B.C. PRESIDENT SPEAKS Mr. John Ackerman, President of the American Bowling Congress, at­tending with Mrs. Ackerman, deliver­ed a short address congratulating the Verhovay to the excellently managed tournament. Referring to events pre­ceding the A.B.C. Tournament in Columbus, he underlined the need for adhering to the American principle of “freedoin to play with whom we want to play.” This was the first time that a Verhovay Bowling Tour­nament was honored by the presence of the President of the A.B.C., and the honor was duly and sincerely ap­preciated by all bowlers as demon­strated by their fervent applause. INTRODUCTIONS Mr. Matasy, then, proceeded to in­troduce the guests each of whom arose acknowledging the greetings of the assembly.- Introduced were Na­tional Secretary Coloman Revesz, Na­tional Treasurer John Szalanczy, Na­tional Auditor and Tournament Ad­ministrator John Sabo, and Mrs. Sabo, Auditing Committee members William C. Kohut, Alexander Nyirati, Chairman of the Board and Vice- President Julius Macker, Vice-Presi­dent Andrew Kovács, M.D., directors Joseph S. Taylor, Henry Gross, Jo­seph Turner, Mike Korosy, former director John Korosfoy, Field Super­visor Henry Rettmann, editor And­rew Fay Fisher, Assistant Secretary Leopold Hirsch, the Rev. and Mrs. John Botty and the Committee of the Calvin Center, the Kitchen Commit­tee, the Youngstown Tournament Committee, and Tournament Secre­tary “Pop” Diliinger and his as­sistants. A telegram from Richard J. Phillips, extending his best wishes for a successful tournament, was read by Mr. Sabo. MRS. BROGLEY, MRS. ARI PRESENT TROPHIES The bowlers and guests attending the Frank J. Brogley and Albert B. Ari Verhovay Memorial Bowling Tournament were greatly honored and deeply touched by the presence of Mrs. Frank Brogley and Mrs. Albert B. Ari who graciously consented to present the trophies created to the memory of their beloved husbands, to the champion teams. Occasion for this very special cere­mony arose from the fact that this tournament was held in the home town of the late Frank J. Brogley who died on January 5, 1946, at the age of 39. And Mrs. Ari, whose husband died on June 26, 1949, at the hge of 41, consented to make the long trip from Trenton, N. J., to join Mrs. Brogley. in the presentation ceremonies. Called upon by National Auditor John Sabo, Vice-President Dr. And­rew Kovács, Chairman of the Na­tional Executive Tournament Com­mittee, introduced first Mrs. Frank J. Brogley who presented the excep­tionally beautiful Frank Brogley1 Memorial Trophy to Bela Balogh, captain of the champion Rose Ann Beauty Shop team of Branch 14, Cleveland, O. Dr. Kovács, then, in­troduced Mrs. Albert B. Ari, who presented the similarly beautiful Al­bert B. Ari Memorial Trophy to Bette Barany, captain of the champion Verhovay No. 1 team of South Bend, Ind. The brief presentation addresses of both Mrs. Brogley and Mrs. Ari were deeply moving expressions of National Auditor John Sabo, Tournament Administrator, got a terrific hand when he assured the assembled bowlers of his conviction that, the Ver­hovay Annual Bowling Tournament is here to stay. Shown here smilingly ac­knowledging the demonstration, he is getting ready to distribute a dozen beau­tiful traveling alarm clocks in leather-cases, to the members of the cham­pion teams and to Mrs. Brogley and Mrs. Ari who made the presentaiton of the trophies to the teams. No alarm clocks were needed on this affair, but they are certain to come handy on those long trips to future Verhovay Tour­naments. The National Anthem Was Sung By Ilona Majoros Ilona Majoros, Youngstown’s own Hungarian singing star, sang the Na­tional Anthem at the opening of the trophy-presentation ceremonies in Calvin Center on Sunday, May 28, Youngstown, Ohio. She brought the house down with her excellent rendition of Hungarian favorites later in the program. In the foreground are seen National Secretary Coloman Revesz, A.B.C. President John Ackerman, Mrs. Ackerman and Mrs. Frank J. Brogley'. Some of the beautiful trophies awarded on this occasion, are seen in the background. the fraternal spirit that inspired their late husbands in their devoted service to the Verhovay. * The National Executive Tourna­ment Committee, with the officers and directors of the Association, wish to take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of all those present on this memorable occasion, both Mrs. Brog­ley and Mrs. Ari for performing the presentation of the memorial cham­pionship trophies in such an inspiring manner. (It is deeply regretted that the pictures taken of these two presen­tations did not turn out suitable for publication purposes. Due to the swift pace of the program, only one pho­tograph could be taken of each epi­sode and, thus, because of some fault in the plates, we had been deprived Of the pictures' of the two highlights of the program.) National Auditor John Sabo con­­gratuláted all winners of the Na­tional Tournament and expressed his certain hope that the Verhovay Tour­naments will be continued in com­pliance with the unanimous desire of the bowlers of the Association. He, then, called upon Director Mike Ko­rosy, member of the National Ex­ecutive Tournament Committee, to present the trophies to the champions of the Two-Man, Individual and All Events in both divisions and. to an­nounce the top money winners in the handicap competition. J. Nagy, Jr., Jr. Marko of Branch 132, South Bend, Ind., D. Burt of Branch 14, Cleve­land, O., A. Stofcho of Ttraneh 14, Cleveland, O., Lillian Nagy and Tony Tanko, Stevie Balogh and again Tony Tanko, all of Branch 14, Cleveland, 0., each received a beautiful trophy. Finally, Mr. Sabo presented the members of the two champion teams and Mrs. Brogley and Mrs. Ari each with a beautiful travelling- alarm clock enclosed in a leather case. (Continued on page 11)
