The present chairman of the Federation is S. H. Hadley, Supreme President of the Protected Home Circle of Sharon, Pa., one of the most! outstanding representatives of the American fraternal benefit system. This is perhaps the first time in the history of the Federation that the officer of a fraternal society has been elected president; an encouraging s:gn of the growing respect in which fraternal organizations are held by commercial insurance companies. Highlight of the convention was the banquet, held in the ballroom of William Penn Hotel on May 4th. Admiral Louis Denfield, Ex-Chief of Naval Operations delivered the keynote address. • A splendid program of entertainment was furnished by societies affiliated with the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress. The famous Duquesne University Tamburitzans, Prof. Matt L. Gouze, Director, were sponsored by the Croatian Fraternal Union, the Serbian Choir, Prof. Boris Dobrovolsky, Director, by the Serb National Federation, the Duchnovich Choir, directed by Prof. Geo. Pauley, by the Greek Catholic Union of the U.S.A.; a Slovak Folk Dance, under the direction of Mary Kadrik, was presented by courtesy of the National Slovak Society of the U.S.A.; a solo by Igor Soroka, by courtesy of the United Russian Orthodox Catholic Women’s Mutual Aid Society, a Hungarian Choir directed by the Rev. Andrew Hamza of the First Hungarian Reformed Church in Pittsburgh, was presented by courtesy of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. Each of the performances was received with boundless enthusiasm, but the Verhovayans present were especially thankful to the Rev. Hamza who performed a miracle with his Hungarian choir of 35, earning great applause from the appreciative audience. Toastmaster at the banquet was John A. Mayer, President of the Reliance Life Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, chairman of the Banquet Committee was J. C. Donaldson of the Hartford Fire Insurance Co., and grace was offered by the- Rev. Wm. S. Wise, Pastor of the First; Methodist Church of Pittsburgh . SMILES [iiiiiiiii!iiiiniiiii!iiiniiiii BATTLE The tall, dignified man joined the crowd in front of a bargain counter, in an attempt to get a very special pair of hose for his -wife. He inched his way patiently, but was buffeted here and there by the women, and made no progress. Suddenly he lowered his head, stretched out his arms, and barged through the crowd. “Can’t you act like a gentleman?” inquired a cold feminize voice at his elbow. “I’ve been acting like a gentleman for the past hour,” replied the man, still charging forward. “From now on I’m going to act like a lady.”-----------•-«?’ ia-----------. Motorcycle Policeman A. A. “Tony” Kraker of Virginia, Minn., believes that when he reminds motorists that speeding may get them off the earth sooner than over it, he should do it politely and harmoniously. When it becomes necessary for Tony to speak of safety to a driver, he doesn’t yell, “Hey you! Pull over to the curb!” Policeman Tony motions to them with a smile, and hands a card to the offender. It recommends to the driver that he ‘Sing While You Drive,” and to use these tunes: At 45 miles per hour, sing “Highways Are Happy Ways.” At 55 miles, sing “I’m But a Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home.” At 65 miles, sing “Nearer, My God, to Thee.” At 75 miles, sing “When the Rol! is Called’ Up Yonder I’ll Be There.” A clergyman advertised for a man servant. The following day a young man called on him. “Well,” asked the clergyman, “can you light the fire and bring early morning tea at seven?” “I—I think I could,” replied the young man, puzzled. “Can you work in the garden?” continued the clergyman. “I mean, can you mow the lawn and prune trees and cultivate the soil?” “Well—er—yes, I think so,” stammered the youth. “Can you polish silver, look after a dog, and be generally useful about the house?” The young man nodded. “And drive a car, and wash the windows, and—-” “I say, sir,” interrupted the young man hoarsely, “I came here to consult you about getting married. If I have to do all that, it’s off!” BUBHBBHnHHHH BUY U. S. SAVINGS BONDS Buják John E.; 499 Dobry Victor, Jr.; 500 Cantrell Mrs. A.; 511 Nagy Joseph (2), Sándor Mrs. Joseph; 542 Svatavich Bela.
