NEWS From The Field (Continued from page 3) strike anyone, at any time. What a blessed feeling it would be to know that the great brotherhood of the Verhovay is behind us. ready to extend a helping hand in the hour of need. To have this assurance, however, we must be ready to stand behind others, ready to help them, too, in their emergencies. To help our fellow-members when help is desperately needed is one of the primary purposes of the branches in a fraternal society. If we fail to realize this, then we have no moral right to expect our fellow-members to help us if we should be in need of brotherly assistance. In conclusion, I’d like to call the attention of all those who have loans on their certificates, to the statements I recently have mailed to them. For the protection of your loved ones, please, at least pay the interests due on these loans. Pay them now, or in easy monthly installments; a quarter or a half a dollar a month will be acceptable. Don’t wait to the end of the year when you may be unable to pay the interests in which case the unpaid interests must be added to the loan. Don’t deprive your loved ones of any part of the death benefit you planned them to have in the case of your death. Finally, 1 think it will interest the members to know that Branch 194 consists at the present of 120 adult and 34 juvenile members. If every member would contribute only a small amount to the Entertainment Fund, we would again be enabled to practice brotherly charity whenever necessary. JOHN MOKRl, Manager. ALIQUIPPA, PA. Branch 345 CORRECTION Announcement was made in last month’s issue of my change of address. Please note that the correct address is: Harmony Grill, Main St., HARMONY, PA. All correspondence should be mailed to my new address. Dues, however, will be collected, as heretofore, on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 255 Calhoun St., Aliquippa. Pa. MOSES BOKOR, Manager. BUFFALO, N. Y. Branch 383 “AFTER DANCE” ON APRIL 22 An “After Dance will be held by Buffalo Br. 383 of the Verhovay F.I.A., on Saturday April 22nd, at the Ukrainian Hall, corner of Military Rd„ and Crete St. Refreshments, food, fun and fraternalism will be furnished by the Dance Committee and music will be furnished by Balint’s Orchestra. Members and friends of the Verhovay from near and far are cordially invited to attend. A good time is assured to all. So remember the date; it’s ‘after’ Easter, on April 22, and if you’re ‘after’ a real good time, don’t wait until ‘after’ it’s too late, but make it a date — now. THE DANCE COMMITTEE. LOS ANGELES, CALIF. Branch 525 WIDOWS’ DANCE Branch 525 scored another social success on Saturday, February 4th, by a unique and highly entertaining Widows’ and Widowers’ Dance that attracted a large crowd from all parts of the city. Each widow received a red and each widower a blue emblem bearing a number. Each one was asked to find the bearer of the number corresponding his, or her, own. Mrs. Paula Papp and Mr. Melchior Balázsi, bearers of number 55, were the first couple to find one another and they were presented with a charming gift. The music was excellent and the program, featuring little Frances Hagye who sang Hungarian selections, met with much applause. The excellent fried chicken and home made pastries won unanimous acclaim. The following donated pastries for the event: Mrs. Joseph Sipos, Mrs. Dennis Kocs, Mrs. George Papp, Mrs. Stephen Haluska, Sr., Mrs. Emery Győrvary, Mrs. Emery Bailey, M rs. William Nagy, Mrs. Pethő, Theresa Sanko, Mrs. Joseph Horvath. Mrs. Andrew Rohaly, Sr., Mrs. Louis Szabó, Mrs. Eugene Kovach, Mrs. I. Somogyi and Mrs. Julius Demeter. Sincere thanks go to them for their generous contributions and also to nil those who had helped make the affair a memorable success. THE COMMITTEE. SMILES OF COURSE, HE WOULD A parson had occasion to reprove a small boy for swearing. “If you feel you must say something just say ‘Brother!’” he said. “Your father doesn’t swear, does he?” “Oh no, sir!” “Well, then, if he were working in the garden and suddenly stepped backwards onto a rake which flew up and hit him from behind, what would he say?” “He’d say: ‘You’re back early, dear!’ ” PAPA ISN’T SO BAD The average man is neither as clever as his wife thought he was when they were engaged, nor as much of a dud as she thinks he is now that they are married. After giving the private a dressing down for being so late in returning with the supplies, the sergeant demanded, “Okay, let’s hear how it happened, Miller.” “Well, I picked up a chaplain along the road,” explained the woebegone rookie, “and from then on the mules couldn’t understand a word I said.” A wife is a woman who sticks with a man through all the trouble he would not have had if he hadn’t married her in the first place. A reputation is easier to keep up than to live down. A bad, bad man was shot in a saloon brawl in Cripple Creek, during the old gold rush days. They buried him; then everyone stood around the filled grave expectantly, waiting for someone to say a few good words for the deceased. All tongues were silent. At last one old man, who had knovtn the deceased longest, lifted his hand. “Friends,” he said with heartfelt feeling, “01’ Jim used to I shoot a mighty good hand of marbles, i as a kid.” PAGE 12 Verhovay Journal March 15, 1950 Birthday Gifts To Crippled Children’s Fund (Continued from page 11) lazs, New Brighton, Pa., Steve Deveke, 3d, A.
