February 15, 1950 Verhovay Journal PAGE 3 ANNIVERSARY BANQUET AT TRENTON BRANCH 13 TRENTON BRANCH 13 EMBRACES FOURTH GENERATION- 45 YEARS OF FRATERNAL SERVICE TO BE REVIEWED AT DINNER ON APRIL 30 IN TRENTON HUNGARIAN HALL. — In the early part of the century, the organization of'a new branch, even though it occurred much more frequently than today, created quite a stir among the members of the Verhovay and the then existing branches outdid each other in overwhelming the new group of fellow-members with good wishes, pledges of helpful cooperation and, usually, .gifts for the treasury of the newborn branch. In those days, fraternalism meant a way of life rather than a mere insurance trademark. The members, who rightfully considered the Association their own enterprise, took a keen interest in its progress and voluntarily shared in all of its activities including the winning of new members which they accomplished not by salesmanship but by their contagious enthusiasm for the Verhovay. It was this enthusiasm that was the real asset of the Association in those days. Of money there w as very little on hand, for the assets in the treasury totalled less than six thousand dollars at the turn of the century while the faithfully satisfied sick benefit and death benefit claims absorbed all of the current receipts then amounting to about 15,000 dollars a year, but the confidence of the membership in the future of the Association and their loyalty (to the mutual aid organization of their own making more than made up for the lack of impressive figures. Today,'with 11 million dollars in assets, annual receipts near the two million dollar mark, insurance in force in excess of 45 million dollars, and a membership of 60,000 in 320 branches in 17 states, we have the impressive figures but we could do with a little more of the sincere enthusiasm that was the mainspring of the Association’s progress in the early years of this century. Branch 13 in Trenton, N. J., was a product of that era. Like most of the other branches and the Association itself, it had small beginnings, but driven by the enthusiasm of the founders it forged ahead and grew with the Verhovay. This branch, 500 members strong today, has retained in an unusual measure the qualities that have been instrumental in developing the Verhovay into an integral part of the American fraternal benefit system. The contributions of Branch 13 to the growing strength of the Association, to the humanitarian, social and patriotic phases of its fraternal program, are a matter of record. The 45th anniversary of this branch will be a splendid occasion to review this record and to draw' renewed courage therefrom for meeting the problems of the present and future with the undefeatable spirit of fraternalism. Characteristic of the vital interest with which the membership takes part in the affairs of this branch is the number of members elected to the committee in charge of the arrangements for the anniversary banquet to be held on Sunday, April 30, beginning at 1 p.m., in the auditorium of the recently remodeled Hungarian Hall of Trenton, N. .1. Included in the Banquet Committee are: Frank Itadvany, President, Charles Pentek, Honorary President, Alexander Virok, Vice-President, Nicholas Pentek, Recording Secretary, Leslie Hobos, Treasurer, John Nemeth, Sick Visitor, John Itadvany and Stephen Vágott auditors, Joseph Demko, Peter Molnár, Stephen Szmutko, Andrew Jármi, I.ouis Wago, George Orosz, Joseph Csorba, George Matuzsan, Louis Vigh, George Matolcsi, Joseph Juhasz, Charles Nemes, John Buga, members, and Frank J. Cher, Manager, Field Supervisor. The Women’s Committee, now' under organization, will be listed in a future issue. I Branch 234 ANNOUNCEMENTS The attendance of an unusually large number of members at our annual meeting was sincerely appreciated by the officers. For the information of those who could not attend, it is announced that pursuant to action taken by the annual session, meetings again will be held quarterly, in January, April, July and October, on the third Sunday of the month, GREAT-GRANDFATHER, GRANDFATHER, FATHER AND SON represent the four generations of male Verhovayans in the same family the picture of whose ladies graces the front page of this edition. The big boy in front is Alexander Virok, III., whose birth in 1948 opened the Fourth Generation Chapter in the history of Branch 13, Trenton, N. J. Fondly and proudly holding Alexander, III., in his lap is his great-grandfather, Mr. John Nemeth, Illustrious Member of the Association, a charter member of Branch 13. Born in Hungary in 1877, he came to the United States in 1901, and worked for 38 years in the wire mill of John Roebling and Son. He is the husband of greatgrandmother Mi's. Nemeth appearing on the front page with her great-granddaughter Kathleen. Standing to the left behind Mr. Nemeth appears Mr. Alexander Virok, Sr., also an Illustrious Member of the Association. Together with his wife, the former Regina Nemeth, they represent the second generation in the family. Their son, Alexander Jr., the third generation Verhovayan, standing to the right behind his grandfather, was born in 1924. He served in World War II with the Navy for four years in the Pacific Theatre of War. He married lovely Magdalene Mrazik in 1947 and is the proud father of Alexander, III., shown heie, and little Kathleen who, together with her mother, appears on the front page. With families like that on its membership roll, Branch 13 certainly has every reason to make a grand celebration of the 45th anniversary of its establishment (announcement of which appears on this page). The Verhovay hopes to serve Mr. and Mrs. Nemeth for many more years and their descendants for many generations to come. event.
