PAGE 8 Verhovay Journal December 21, 1949 I I 1950 Tournament City News I. How Are We Doing? Full information on all arrangements made for the 7th Annual Verhovay National Ten Pin Tournament, to be known as “The Frank Brogley, and Albert B. Ari Memorial Tournament,’’ scheduled for May 26-28, 1950, in Youngstown, Ohio, have been published in the October and November issues of the Journal. A brief review of all the important data, together with information on items to be cleared up hereafter, will be published in the January edition and those who may have missed some important points in the previous releases are requested to look forward to the next issue. The matter of utmost importance to the Tournament as well as every participant at this time is the progress of the Tournament Financing Campaign. Every bowler has a stake in the campaign. Let’s see how we are doing at this time? Up to the middle of December 23 teams in 15 branches have entered the campaign by ordering more than 2,000 books of Tournament Shares. 555 more books of shares have been ordered by managers of 8 branches in which there are altogether 29 active bowling teams who, however, have not indicated their intention of participating in the campaign even though this would be to their benefit I as had been thoroughly explained in the circular letters sent to the captain of every bowling team on record. No word has been received up to date, however, from 11 branches representing a total of 25 teams, that is, neither the managers nor the team captains of these branches have favored the National Executive Committee with a reply to its proposals. Obviously, there has been a great improvement since last month, but we still are far away from 100% participation which, considering the great advantages of the campaign to the bowlers, is not an unreasonable expectation. In most instances, we assume, participation in the campaign has been merely delayed. But if the bowling teams are to derive full benefit from the campaign, there should be no more delay. Participation in this campaign requires no lengthy conferences, discussions, debates. Everyone assuming his share in the campaign will benefit from doing so in accordance with the terms of the drive. Where teamwork seems »impossible, an individual still may go ahead and do his best to his own advantage as well as to that of those many bowlers who respond to the challenge of this campaign with — sportsmanship. Here is hoping that every team that has not yet decided to participate in the campaign will do so with the beginning of the New Year. Let’s show the world that Verhovay sportsmanship is a real force! Advertisers Everywhere To Be Offered Space In 1950 Tournament Album — Tournament Sponsors, Patrons And Advertisers To Be Solicited By Managers And Bowlers In All Branches. — Arrangements have been completed for the publication of a Tournament Album on the occasion of the 7th Annual Verhovay National Ten Pin Tournament, to be held on May 26-28, 1950, in Youngstown, Ohio, the National Executive Tournament Committee announces. The Album will be dedicated to the memory of the late Director Frank Brogley, in whose home town the bowlers of the Verhovay will meet in 1950, and the late Albert B. Ari, Vice- President, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the National Executive Tournament Committee, both of whom had died in the prime of life to the great sorrow of the Association’s membership whom they had served with unmatched devotion for many years. It is in remembrance of their outstanding contributions to the advancement of the Association and especially to the development of bowling as Verhovay’s national sport that this coming event will be known as the “Frank Brogley and Albert B. Ari Memorial Tournament.” In view of the commemorative character of the Tournament Album the Committee adopted a design that is essentially different from that of the Album published for the 1949 Detroit Tournament. Much larger in size and contents it will be a fitting symbol of the growth of the Verhovay National Bowling Tournaments on the foundation laid chiefly by the late Frank Brogley and Albert B. Ari, these two inspired leaders of the second generation membership. Its cover page, designed by an artist and printed in four colors, will make this volume an especially appealing product of printing art. YOUNGSTOWN, O. -Branch 21 Sports Club Speak by Steve Mislay Beware you out-of-towners With aspirations to win, The Yoco., Verhovay Keglers Might make your hopes dim.. —The poor-man’s Waldo Emerson.—Just who will take home all the prize money at the Seventh Annual Verhovay Tournament here in Youngstown I couldn’t say until I gaze into my crystal ball, but I do know that the teams of our fair City will have something to say about the outcome. All indications show that our teams will be in high gear come Tourney time. Every Thursday night/is near riot night at the Southway Alleys. That is the night our two Branch 21 men’s teams bowl. Everybody in the alleys knows that the “Happy Hungarians” of the Verhovay are gathered in full force. If there is anyone who has more fun than a bunch of monkeys, it’s the Verhovayans. When one of the lads makes a strike, we shout, when a turkey is scored we scream. In all probability, if one of our boys would happen to score a perfect (300) game, we would parade him around the alleys on our shoulders singing the Hungarian National Anthem. Then, when one of the boys makes a blow we threaten him with' everything from mayhem to farming him out down the Ohio river with luggage and bowling ball to one of the smaller branches. Another excellent phrase we use on them is “If you don’t strike out. hand in your bowling shirt to the captain.” The way the aces of the No. 1 team are bowling, it wouldn't be longbefore they will be pitching- in their undershirts. While we are on the subject of the Aces, (the No. 1 team,) I might as well relate, that is with a somewhat downhearted feeling, the standings of our various teams. The No: 2 team, which I am proud to be on, are battling for the first place spot with the Quench Bar five. The No. 1 team, or the Aces as we affectionately call them, bless their pointed little heads, are riding the cellar. They are down so low that one would be led to believe they are cavorting in an isolated Leprosarium. And that’s mighty low. Captain Joe Nagy states his team is laying low during the first half hoping that we, (the No. 2 team,) will win so that his team will come thru in good fashion to win the second (Continued on page 9,) The advertising campaign for the Frank Brogley and Albert B. Ari Memorial Tournament Album is to commence with the beginning of January, 1950. The major part of the advertisements to appear in the Album will come from the friends of the Verhovay in the Youngstown area where the Tournament will be held. However, in view of numerous inquiries in regards to advertising privileges, a special section will be reserved for advertisers outside of the Youngstown area. Orders for advertisements or inclusion in the Sponsors’ and Patrons’ list in this section will be accepted from any part of the United States. The rates, based on a page size of 8V2xlU’. are as follows: Full page advertisement ........................... $75.06 , Half page advertisement ........................... $40.00 Quarter page advertisement ................... $25.00 One-Eighth page advertisement ............... $15.00 One-Sixteenth page advertisement ......... $10.00 Sponsor’s donation (including 3 lines of printed text) ................................. $ 5.00 Patron’s donation (1 line text) ............... $ 2.00 Advertisements, Sponsors and Patrons listings will be acceptable from members and non-members alike. Managers, branch officers, captains or members of bowling teams desiring to solicit advertisements, sponsors’ or patrons’' listings for the Frank Brogley and Albert B. Ari Memorial Tournament Album will be furnished authorizations and album samples (“dummies” with the cover page printed in four colors,) upon request. The terms to solicitors are attractive, better thanin the last Tournament Album campaign. All those outside of Youngstown, wishing to participate in the campaign are requested to write to Mr. John Sabo, National Auditor, National Executive Tournament Committee, Verhovay Building, 436 Fourth Avenue, Pittsburgh 19, Pa. Youngstown branch-managers should contact Mr. Stephen Matasy, Atty., Chairman of the Tournament Album Committee, 704 Realty Building, Youngstown, Ohio. The National Executive Tournament Committee sincerely hopes that the branches of the Association, the businessmen dealing with the Verhovay membership, the friends of the Verhovay and its national sports program will favor the Frank Brogley and Albert B. Ari Memorial Tournament Album with their advertisements. At the same time the Committee appeals to all members of the Association to become Sponsors and Patrons of the Frank Brogley and Albert B. Ari Memorial Tournament. Donations for this purpose will be gratefully accepted and fonvarded to the Committee by the branch managers of the Association.
