Verhovay Journal PAGE 3 THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE VERHOVAY F. I. ASSOCIATION announce with profound sorrow the death of FRANK BODNAR ILLUSTRIOUS MEMBER OF THE ASSOCIATION, the Manager of Branch 408, Carmichaels, Pa., on Sunday, September 25th, at the age of 59. The Board of Directors, paying final tribute to the memory of our Illustrious Fellow-Member, convey on behalf of the membershp of the Verhovay F. I. Association their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family. NATIONAL PRESIDENT SPEAKER AT BR. 45 TESTIMONIAL DINNER — JOSEPH DROTOS AND JOHN MIKULA TO RECEIVE VERHOVAY SERVICE AWARDS AT BANQUET IN SLOVENE HALL, IN CLEVELAND, ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23RD. — The presentation of the Verhovay Service Awards to Joseph Drotos, President of Branch 45, and John Mikula, Comptroller, by National President John Bencze will be the occasion for a testimonial dinner to be given by the branch for its two outstanding officers on Sunday, October 23rd, beginning at 1 p.m., in the Slovene Hall, Dennison Avenue, rear building, West Side, Cleveland, Ohio. An excellent dinner and a splendid program will serve the enjoyment of the members of Branch 45 as well as the representatives of many other branches attending this event in honor of the two men each of whom had served this branch in various capacities for a great number of years. Both of the Illustrious Members are well known and highly popular in Verhovay circles. The banquet committee is confident that the membership of Branch 45 will turn out in a body to fittingly demonstrate their appreciation of the services rendered by Messrs. Drotos and Mikula to the entire Association. October 19, 1949 NEWS From The Field (Continued from page 2) Changing the subject to a more pleasant topic, I’d like to remind my fellow-members of the approaching Christmas season. It’s about this time of the year that most parents start to worry about what to buy their children. Personally, I am convinced that there is no gift more valuable than a Verhovay policy. It doesn’t cost as much as a new bicycle and it certainly is easier to pay for, yet it is of a much more lasting value than any other gift. An Endowment certificate, for instance, represents not only a certain amount of money at a certain future date, it is also an excellent instrument of character building, because it teaches the child the habit of thrift and the appreciation of future values as compared to the cheap pleasures afforded by costly toys that are junked a few days after the holidays. Those little ones grow up very fast and once they have attained the age of 18 or 20, it won’t make much difference to them what kind of toys they had when they were little children, but they will think the world of you if you have used the years of their childhood for accumulating a fund for them on the Verhovay Endowment plan that will give them a real start toward independence. At that time they may want to enter College, or they may plan to join some sound business enterprise, or they may even think of getting married. Whatever their plans, to be able to lay their hands on a substantial amount, be it only Five-Hundred, or a Thousand Dollars, will make all the difference in the world to them and you may be assured of their gratitude for your foresight, your wise planning and your understanding of their real needs. Why not give me a call and let me explain to you what endowment plans our Association has to offer for your children. Whatever your situation, I know that we will be able to work out a plan that will suit yoür pcicketbook and, at the same time, assure your child of help when he will need it most. JOHN MOKRI, Manager. SPRINGDALE, PA. Branch 296 IMPORTANT BRANCH EVENTS An excellent Gypsy orchestra will furnish the music at the Verhovay Home on Sunday, October 22nd. Trenton Member Retires After 45 Years’ Service — Company President Commends Nicholas Pentek, and Daughter In Congratulatory Letter. — Nicholas Pentek, an old, popular member of Branch 13, Trenton, N.J., of 118 Rusling St., recently went into retirement after 45 years of continued employment with the John A. Roebling’s Sons Company. On the occasion of his retirement he received the following heartwarming letter from Charles R. Tyson, President of the firm: September 20, 1949 Dear Nick: It gives me very great satisfaction to be able to say to you congratulations upon having completed fortyfive years of service with John A. Roebling’s Sons Company. It also gives me pleasure in the knowledge that this letter is being written by your eldest daughter, who with you has evidenced a deep spirit of loyalty to the Company. I wish that more of us who are devoting our lives to industry had the same convictions that you two have. As you know it has been customary to present to employees engraved lapel pins in acknowledgment of their record of service and as a token of the many years spent with the Company. With the enclosed emblem go the best wishes for your continued good health and happiness. Sincerely yours, CHARLIE, President. We join President Tyson in congratulating fellow-member Nicholas Pentek upon his marvellous service record and in wishing him many years of happiness and good health in retirement. PERRYOPOLIS, PA. Branch 389 ANNOUNCEMENT All members of Branch 389 are urged to pay their dues in time, in accordance with the provisions of the by-laws. Every manager is required to file his monthly report with the Home Office by the 25th of each month which means, of course, that the manager must close his books a few days before that date. Payments received after closing cause a great deal of correspondence and additional bookkeeping all of which can be avoided if the members cooperate with their manager. It would be sincerely appreciated if each member of Branch 389 would make it a rule to pay all dues before the 20th of the month. JOSEPH DOMONKOS, Manager. CARMICHAELS, PA. Branch 408 ANNOUNCEMENT The branch-managers office, vacated due to the death of our Illustrious Fellow-Member Frank Bodnar, has been filled at the last meeting with Richard Prodan, Box 321, Carmichaels, Pa. All members of Branch 408 are requested to pay their dues and report their claims to Manager Richard Prodan. THE HOME OFFICE. DETROIT, MICH. Branch 443 ANNUAL MEETING The attention of the members of Branch 443 is called to our annual meeting which will be held on Sunday, December 4, beginning at 2 p.m., sharp, at the former Verhovay Home, 8005 West Jefferson Ave., Room 12. It is very important that all members attend this meeting at which the officers of the branch will be elected for the coming year. At the same time I urge all members who happen to be in arrears to make every effort to settle their accounts in order that we may close our books for the year with every member’s j account paid up to date. We depend on the Verhovay for insurance protection when death overtakes one of our loved ones and we appreciate the fact that the protection afforded by the Verhovay is safe, sound and j dependable at all times. Let’s not forget, then, that the Verhovay, too, j depends on its members and let us | be as dependable and conscientious in discharging our obligations as the Verhovay is in protecting us from the economic consequences of illness, accident and death. Those who have loans on their membership certificates ate urgently requested to pay the interests due j thereon not later than at the annual meeting. Overdue interests will be added to the indebtedness which, in turn, will increase the interest load thereon. Remember, by paying the interests and reducing the loan we protect our loved ones against loss. I would like to hope that all members will attend our annual meeting and cast their votes in the election of officers. JOSEPH SZABÓ, Manager. COLLIERS, W. VA. Branch 452 A REQUEST May I request the members of Branch 452 to pay their dues not later than the 20th of each month in order that I may file my monthly reports with the Home Office on time, in accordance with the provisions of the by-laws? Please, do not expect me to make two-three calls i for the dues, because with gasoline prices being what they are, I just can’t afford to make so many trips and I certainly can’t pay the dues for my fellow-members. Please, make it a rule to pay all dues no later than the 20th of each month. Your cooperation will be sincerely appreciated. DENNIS PALFALVY, Manager. CHICAGO, ILL. Branch 529 MERGER ANNOUNCED This is to advise the membership of Branch 529 of the merger of our Branch in Branch 164, effective October 1st, 1949. The members of former Branch 529 are requested, therefore, to attend, whenever possible, the meetings of Branch 164 which are held on the first Friday of each month, in the evening, at 333 W. JOHN HOVANTZI, ex*manager. A five-year-old girl was taught to close her evening prayer, during the absence of her traveling father, with • “And please watch over my papa.” It sounded very sweet to the mother, but her astonishment may be imagined when one evening the little girl added: “And you had better keep an eye on mamma, too.”
