Matters received after the above time limit or during the course of the meeting, shall not be discussed and the Board of Directors shall not consider them until the following meeting of the Board of Directors in September, 1949. JOHN BENCZE, National President The 63rd birthday of the Verhovay F. I. Association, on February 21st, is still before us, but the observance of this day, designated “Verhovay Charity Day” by the last national convention, already has begun on a scale heretofore unprecedented in the history of our organization. And the instantaneous and truly generous response of hundreds of fellowmembers to the appeal of our national officers encourages the highest hopes for the outcome of this year’s campaign. THE APPEAL A circular letter, signed by Natonal President John Bencze and National Secretary Coloman Revesz, was mailed to 25,000 Verhovay families. The letter reads as follows: “Dear Fellow-Verhovayan: Of all the sad sights in our afflicted world none is more heartbreaking than that of a crippled child, rendered helpless, hopeless and unhappy, by illness or accident. Of all the tragedies appealng to our sympathies none is more deserving of generous response than that of, a father and mother weeping in impotent despair over such an unfortunate child. To create a fund for providing medical treatment or rehabilitative training for Verhovay’s crippled juvenile members, February 21st, the birthday of the Association, has been set aside as “Verhovay Charity Day” by the Convention. Up to this date nearly Three Thousand Dollars had been contributed, but at least $12,- 000 more is needed for the Verhovay Fund For The Aiding of Crippled Juvenile Members to be put into operation. Pleading for your generous sympathy for the plight of our crippled children, we present the Verhovay Charity Day Appeal of 1949 to you. Please, write your name, address and branch-number on the enclosed coin-envelope, insert your donation, however small, and mail it in the also enclosed self-addressed return envelope, requiring no postage, on or before February 21st, the 63rd birthday cf the Verhovay. On behalf of our crippled children — we thank you.” The first batch pi letters left the home office shortly before the end of January. After that, approximately 2,000 had been mailed each day. Four days after the mailing of the first group the first 19 return envelopes were delivered. Since then the volume of donations received increased by leaps and bounds until on the 7th of February, the last day included in this report, 144 return envelopes were delivered. A total of 323 indivdual donations, totalling $460.85 were received during th’e first week of February, up to and including, February 7th, 1949. The AVERAGE contribution was $1.42 per donor in this group. In addition, two donations of $10 each were received from branches, which also are acknowledged at this time. Thus, receipts totalled $480.85, bringing the total amount held on the Crippled Children’s Fund as of February 7th, 1949 to $3,403.43. The donations received up to and including February 7th, 1949, are listed and officially acknowledged below. The list will be continued in the next edition of the Journal. We trust that the publishing of these early returns will segve as an inspiration to those mailing their contributions at a later date.
