(Continued from page 7) the members of the tournament committees and most particularly from the members of the Prize Committee. How about dropping the Tournament Committee at the Home Office a note? And, of course, the best uniformed teams again will be awarded suitable prizes. The experiences of the last tournament, however, have led the National Executive Committee to the conclusion that it will be best not to tie this part of the competition to entries Therefore, all teams participating in the Detroit Tournament will automatically take part in the “best uniform contest”. Neither registrations, nor entry fees are required for participation in this competition. No uncertainty prevails in the matter of entry fees. The . complete schedule of entry fees for the various events is published in this edition of the Journal. It appears also on the Tournament poster. Naturally, the 100% return of entry fees to the prize fund is guaranteed. The Financing Campaign Since the size of the tournament purse depends on the outcome of the financing campaign. it should be of great interest to all bowlers how the campaign is progressing so far? Instantaneous and most gratifying cooperation has been given by quite a number of branches. It was their response that enabled the National Executive Committee to set the minimum estimate of the tournament purse at $4,000. We hope, however, to be able to go far above that amount and pending continued cooperation on the part of the majority of the branches our hopes should materialize without any difficulty. Money started to come in the third day after the campaign material had been distributed. Ever since then, we have been kept busy keeping up with the flow. There was a definite slow-down around Christmas time, but that was to be expected. Immediately after Christmas, business picked up again and the volume has been steadily increasing. As far as soliciting advertisements for the Tournament Album is concerned, Detroit is far in the lead, and that, too, was to be expected. However, other areas have been lagging behind and, therefore, we appeal to all managers as well as teams to get the ball rolling in their community. Less than two months remain until dead • line date, March 15th, 1949. Canvassing for advertisement orders and sponsorship donations must commence without fail on an extensive scale and orders received must be submitted without delay, for the bulk of the material to be included in the Tournament Album must reach the printer far ahead of deadline date in order that the volume may be completed for the tournament. By setting the deadline date for March 15th we did not infer that it will be alright if we receive the bulk of the material around that time. Special attention should be given to the Patrons’ List. It is to include the full name, and address, of each and every sponsor of the Sixth Verhovay National Bowling Tournament. By contributing $2.50, ANYONE may become a Patron of this important event, but members of the Verhovay, entitled to a 20% discount, shall be required to pay only $2.00 for inclusion in the Patrons’ List. Every branch is urged to make an effort to enlist as many members, and non-members, as possible, as Patrons of the Sixth Tournament. Now that the costly Christmas season is over, we are looking forward to receive a great volume of entries in the Patrons’ List and of advertising orders for the Tournament Album. Please, do not wait until March 15th. for that’s the last day for filing income tax returns and, as such, not a suitable date for soliciting donations! The sale of shares is progressing very nicely. Up to this date. Branch 17, Lorain, Ohio, George Jávor, Manager, is the leader in this field. Apparently, the bowlers in Lorain work hand in hand with Mr. Jávor and the results show that real teamwork is being done in Branch 17! It is a pleasure to report that 99.2% of the branches are cooperating. Of all the V e r h o v a y branches only THREE have returned the campaign materia! refusing to take part in the drive. Well, there is no such thing as 100% cooperation and we believe that a 99.2% participation constitutes an all-time record. It BOWLING — SCORES — DETROIT, MICH. Branch 36 Here are a few more of our scores and you’ll notice that the boys are still out to break records. On December 15th we rocked the alleys with a mighty 3051, Poch leading the teáin with 654, We had a beautiful single game, too, with a score of 1052. Our District Manager Mr. Lukacs, is really building up his hopes for another championship in May, and even though I told him not to talk too much, he still insisted: “I’ll should be noted, also, that quite a number of small branches, most of them not pursuing any sports activities, already have done more than their share for the successful outcome of the campaigp. To the conscientious and devoted managers of these branches we say: thank you! It is too early yet to take any chances on forecasting the outcome of the campaign. But the signs are most encouraging and indications are very much in favor of a smashing success. Nothing will prevent the successful conclusion of this campaign if the bowlers in every branch will lend their wholehearted cooperation to their managers and keymen. The issue would be in doubt only if the bowlers, for whose benefit this entire campaign is being conducted, would leave the whole burden of the task to the branch-managers. take all bets!” (Ha! Ha!) All jokes aside, he never does say much bujt I'm convinced now that he is more on the satisfied side over last year’s changes. Can’t omit mentioning our girls here: they are bringing more honors for the Verhovay . . . Helen Fazekas rolled in the Detroit News Tournament over her average. Her average was 120 and she totalled 711 which gave her 111 pins over. She received a nice medal and also a nice little sum of money for bowling in 5 consecutive games. On January 2nd we tied Horn’s with the leader in which we held the upper hand in the duel for the three games. We had a very nice little audience for the evening, so maybe more of our members are hearing about the great achievements and honors we are bringing our Branch. Incidentally, because I’m the kind of guy who likes to give credit where credit is due, I’d like to mention one of our last year’s, bowlers, Mr. Jjoe Tofh, in the same league, who is carrying a neat 190 average at present, which isn’t bad, and 1 wish him more luck to hold,' or even to better that. Team standings in the Rouge Major Classics League, as of the end of December, showed Branch 36 holding 5th place with 36 games won and 24 lost. We have also retained 3rd place in the Team High — 3 Games category with the 3051 rolled on December 15th. In the Individual Averages list Paycheck holds 5th place with an average of 190, J. Vargo 22nd place with 186 avg., Poch 38th place with 181 avg., Konkoly 47th place with 178 avg., and Igyarto 49th place with 177 avg. The following are our two top scores for the last'month: December 15, 1948 J. Vargo 202 205 204 611 D. Igyarto 180 177 210 587 A. Konkoly 174 223 207 604 (Continued on prge 9)
