PAGE 10__________________________;____________ Verhovay BRANCH 37 Chicago South Side Greetings, all you Verhovayites! Gosh, it's been so long since I’ve pounded out a story for the Journal that I’m beginning to feel like a newcomer to the ranks of Journal contributors! But then MY excuse for not writing is a valid one, plus being very good, too! You see, I became accustomed to typing my stories and when a machine wasn’t available I just couldn’t seem to get in the groove by the Palmer method of sending in the dope. Well, to cut it short, my brand new Underwood Noiseless arrived last, week — big, heavy, table model — and P's really my pride and joy! But there is one drawback I didn’t count on . . . the machine won’t write up stories of its own accord! You gotta pound and peck at it, and sweat and strain and groan and ‘X’ out lines and add new ones. All along I was under the impress that the modern machine only demanded a constant supply of paper and it would do the rest automatically! Carramba, I’ve been bamboozled! How well I remember those fortuneteling typewriters that are featured at Riverview Park here in Chicago. All one does is hand over a two-bit piece to the operator of the booth and he presses a button which starts the machine working. And talk about speed! The carriage flies back and forth like magic, and in less than a minute your future is typed neatly on. a slip of paper. Now wouldn’t it be duck soup to have a machine like that to do all your work? Bowling Scores -Now then, let’s start talking about our bowling scores. Below are the results of the Verhovay Mixed Bowling League Br. No. 37 for the night of November 27. This was Thanksgiving Day, but I certainly can’t admit being thankful for the scores I made1 TEAM No. 1 p,Demeter 82125 104 811 J Frank 87126 102 315 p.Kun 133153 132 418 M.H. But j I’ll not be alone, so long as Coleman j Gyure keeps up his losing streak! ! Helen Demko recently acquired a j brand new ball and it’s doing her I justice, according to those scores. I My new ball isn’t up to par of late! Maybe I shine it too much. I put some Johnson Glo-coat on it last week and the ball looked wonderful, ! but it didn’t behave properly! Too ; slick! Next week I’ll try a little resin on it to make sure the ball curve properly! Look out, Branch 375! On December 13, a Saturday, we of branch 37 will hold a match game with branch 375 who, as you remem- • ber, were part of our league last year. Now that we’re bowling separately we’ll see just who is the better. Only ten from each league will participate in this match game, the ten highest bowlers. This should make the game highly interesting and fairly well matched as to scores. We’ll have to rely on Bill Kun of No. 37 to keep the big scores on our side as he has a terrific speed ball, as well as A1 Demko, who has that famous fire-ball special! (Oh, those poor pin boys, when A1 lets fly!) Last year we bowled two match games with Branch 342 of the west side of Chicago and they beat the pants off us both times. Now we're getting steamed up about those losses and maybe we’ll challenge No. 342 again, after we trounce No. 375! (Gads, what bold words!) 25 Silver Dollars . . . Mr. and Mrs. Louis Homyak, proprietors of Chesterfield Recreation where we bowl every Thursday evening, celebrated the 25th anniversary ! of operating that business on Sat- j urday, November 29 at their establishment. They made extensive pre- j parations to do justice to this special day, and an open house was held, to which all their close friends and league bowlers were invited. Talk about good food! There were so many good things to eat that we had quite a time trying to decide where to start eating. We had mammoth turkeys, delicious hams and kolbász sandwiches, and stuffed cabbage. Cakes and pies and pastries of every description and taste, size and color. Congratulations by the score were i preferred and all of us present wish- j ed that we could also celebrate with them their golden anniversary. The bowlers of Branch No. 37 held a meeting at their latest session of bowling and voted upon a suitable gift to present to Mr. and Mrs. Hornyak on this occasion. The gift agreed upon was a corsage consisting of 25 silver dollars. Very pretty, in addition to being highly useful! Who’ll go to Cleveland? Talk of the fifth National Bowling tournament to be held in Cleveland next year is being bandied about - amongst us members in No. 37 and we’re already trying to decide just who will go. But of course, as men-Joumal _____________December 10, 1947 Bowling News and Scores LORAIN, 0., HOST TO YOUNGSTOWN BOWLERS AT MATCH-GAME On behalf of the members of the Verhovay Bowling Team of Youngstown, 0., we wish to extend our sincere thanks to the members of the bowling team and the officers of Branch 17 for their marvellous hospitality and for the wonderful time we had in their midst on Sunday, November 23rd, at the 45th anniversary of Branch 17. We had a splendid match-gáme, followed by the anniversary banquet and a dance ’ that kept us in Lorain until the early morning hours. We shall long remember the wonderful time we had and we will do our utmost to return the hospitality of our Lorain friends when they come to visit us for a return engagement, for which, we hope, the opportunity will soon arise. Anyway, the first ten bowlers on our list will be the lucky ones and I think it’s a good idea if we all tried a little bit harder to pull our averages up and maybe some of the ones who think they don’t have a chance now will even surprise themselves. Yes, yes, I know, practice what you teach, or preach, or something! But I am trying, you gotta admit! Let’s aid the ladies! The Ladies’ Auxiliary of Verhovay Branch No. 37 are going to hold an evening of entertainment at the St. Peter and Paul Greek Catholic Church here in Chicago on Wednesday, December 10th, commencing at 8:00 p.m. Plan to attend this as a good time for all is assured. Get your tickets from any Verhovay member. The Ladies’ Auxiliary tries in every way to hold us younger members out and we should do our best in aiding them in their activities also. This election is one of the vital functions of our Fraternal organizations and all Verhovay members are urged to be present to cast their votes for whomever they deem worthy to hold office. After the business meeting and following the election, there will be refreshments served. I have it by wireless pigeon that something more fiery than ginger ale is going to, be served. Yup, even Yokey-dok, for them that crave it! Many thanks! Before we forget, the members of our bowling league wish tó extend their sincere thanks to those ladies who helped make our latest evening of entertainment so successful. We also wish to thank all those who donated such wonderful gifts and also for their time and efforts which insured such a grand evening of happy hours. By jeepers, it sure looks like I’ve hit the limit, so I’ll bring this report to a close, wishing all a wonderful alul joyous holiday season, and above all. keep smiling.
