VOLUME XXX OCTOBER 29. 1947 NO. 20 Minutes of the XXL Regular Convention of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association MINUTES, taken at the XXI. regular convention of the Verhovay Fra­ternal Insurance Association on September 8th, 1947, and the following days in the English Room of the Fort Pitt Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 1. ) The Convention is called to order at 9:20 A.M., by Supreme President John Bencze who in his opening address extends a cordial welcome to the members of the Convention and requests the delegates to diligently apply themselves to the task before them. After briefly reviewing the activities of the officers during the last qudriennium he declares the convention in session. 2. ) At the same time he requests the Convention to pay a one minute silent tribute to the memory of the late fellow-members Joseph Bumbulucz and Frank Brogley. 3. ) The President introduces to the assembly Oscar E. Kottler, Deputy Insurance Commissioner of the State of Pennsylvania, who in his brief address conveys the following: He extends his greetings to the convention, expressing his appreciation of being able to be present. During the several years of his service in his office he has fully acquainted himself with the progress and management of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, of which he speaks in terms of highest approbation. The Insurance Department was glad to approve the merger of the Workingmen's Sick Benefit Federation with the Verhovay Fra­ternal Insurance Association. He hopes and believes that others, too, will fol­low this example and that, sooner or later, all the Hungarian fraternal so­cieties will be united. In conclusion he extends his best wishes to the Associa­tion for continued good work and success in its activities. 4. ) President John Bencze orders the presentation for verification of the credentials of the delegates. He appoints the following committee for the examination of the credentials: Augustus Habodasz, John Orosz. Joseph Soos, William Kohut and Albert Ibos, delegates. 5. ) The above committee finds that the convention has 166 votes. The election of several delegates had not been ratified by the Committee of At­tendance. The credentials of these delegates have been referred by the Con­vention to the Committe« of Appeals for final disposal. Accordingly, the convention has a total of 166 votes. 6. ) Upon request by President John Bencze the delegates, then, sing the national anthem “My Country”. 7. ) The president orders the election of the chairman of' the convention. The following were nominated from the floor: Coloman Kolozsvary, Moses Bokor, Rezső Geller and Stephen Lang. Charles Pozsgay declined the nomina­tion in favor of Coloman Kolozsvary. 8. ) The president appoints the following delegates to the Committee of Elections: Andrew Tyukody, Andrew Siket and Andrew Bandy. 9. ) The President announces that an absolute majority is required for the election of the chairman of the convention. 10. ) The Committee of Elections announce the results of the first ballot, as follows: Moses Bokor received 53, Coloman Kolozsvary 50, Stephen Lang 43 and Rezső Geller 10 votes. None of the candidates having received an absolute majority, the presi­dent orders the second ballot between the two nominees having received the highest number of votes. The result is the following: Coloman Kolozsvary received 92 and Moses Bokor 67 votes. 11. ) Fellow-member Coloman Kolozsvary has been elected chairman of the convention. Coloman Kblozsvary, elected chairman, extends his cordial thanks to the assembly for their confidence in him. 12. ) The president adjourns the meeting at 1 o’clock, for the luncheon period, until 2:30 P.M. 13. ) Supreme President John Bencze calls the meeting to order at 2:20 P.M., and yields the chair to chairman Coloman Kolozsvary. 14. ) By unanimous resolution the Convention elects Moses Bokov as first vice-chairman. 15. ) The following are nominated from among the second generation re­presentatives: William C. Kohut, Charles Young, Mike Korossy Jr., Joseph Taylor and Albert Ibos. The following are tlie election results: Charles Young 58, Mike Korossy Jr., 36, William Kohut 30, Joseph Taylor 17 and Albert Ibos 14 votes. 16. ) Accordingly, Charles Young has been elected second vice-chairman for the second generation representatives, by 58 votes. 17. ) The following were nominated, then, for the office of recording sec­retary: Bertram Kun, Mrs. Stephen Paul, Charles Uray and Andrew Tyukody. Bertram Kun and Andrew Tyukody declined their nomination. The Committee of Elections reported that Charles Uray has received 109 and Mrs. Stephen Paul 52 votes. Thus, Charles Uray had been elected recording secretary of the convention. 18. ) The chairman of the Convention, then, oiders the introduction of the present representatives of the press who are the following: Izsó Szekely, Paul Nadanyi of the Amerikai Magyar Népszava; Zoltán Gombos, Szabadság; Alexander Rákosi, Magyar Jövő; Paul Ács, Newarki Hírlap; Albert Fiók, Magyarság; Edmund Bohner, Mi Lapunk and Szabad Sajtó; Andrew Fay-Fisher, Hungarian Miners Journal, Szabadság. Toledo; Árpád Tarnoczy, Akroni Hírlap; editor and Mrs. Louis Tarcay, Az Újság; the Rev. Dr. John Kerekes, Perth Amboyi Híradó and New Brunswicki Ma­gyar Híradó; Mrs. Margaret Kunstadt, Otthon; Alexander Gondos, Detroiti Magyarság; George Szécskay, Jó Pásztor; George Kemény, Detroiti Újság and Californiai Magyarság; Coloman Kaldor, St. Louis és Vidéke; Henry F. Kelemen, Day­­toni Híradó; Emery Siket, Egyleti Élet; Ernest Kunstadt, Wisconsini Ma­gyarság; Hugo Kormos, New Brunswicki Magyar Hírnök; Charles Young, Buífaloi Híradó and George Jávor, Lorain és vidéke. 19. ) The assembly unanimously resolves that sessions be held daily from 8 A.M., to 1 P.M., and from 2 P.M., to 5 P.M. 20. ) The chairman announces that the sessions on Wednesdey and Thurs­day will be held in the Gold Room. 21. ) With 66 votes against 53 the convention resolves not to divide the assembly into committees. Should it become necessary, special committees shall be elected by the convention whenever indicated. 22. ) The Convention resolves by a majority of 74 over 46 votes to ap­point a committee for disposing of the matter of contested elections. 26 dele­gates have been appointed by the convention to this committee which is in­structed by the chairman to attend to this task and report on the next morn­ing. The following are the members of the committee; Dr. Andrew Kovács, Edward Lukacs, Joseph Letenyei, Alexander Puskas, Rezső Geller, Stephen Nyers, Michael Molnár, Louis David, Dennis Nagy, Frank Toth, John Bozs­vay, Andrew Bandy, Joseph Kantor, John Kopácsi, John Orosz, Ernest Palos, Mrs. Stephen Paul, John Müller, Julius Kovács, Paul Benyo, Anton Lachman, Louis Katona, Alexander Debreceni, Emery Készéi, John Bokor and Leo Fischer. 23. ) John Bencze submits in behalf of the Supreme officers and directors their report which is read, by request of Mr. Bencze and upon approval by the Convention, by Emery Florian stenographer. 24. ) The schedule or business as prepared and submitted by the officers, is adopted by the Convention. 25. ) The assembly resolves to summon the district managers to appear at the convention for the purpose of furnishing information in regards to promotional matters. The supreme officers are instructed to extend these in­vitations by telegram. 26. ) Director Henry Gross extends his greetings to the XXI. Convention on the occasion of the merger of the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation with the Association. 27. ) Leopold Hirsch, assistant secretary, also, conveys his greetings to the
