(Stephen Danko allegedly is a member also of Branch 84, Luzerne Mines, Pa., where he is said to be a member of the Sick Benefit Department.) Di­rector Julius Macker moved and after due deliberations the meet­ing decided that Stephen Danko be deemed eligible in accordance with the provisions of the By­laws. The Recording Secretary is requested to secure the opinion of the Home Office on this mat­ter. 6. ) The choice between elec­tion by acclamation and by sec­ret vote was put before the meeting which unanimously agreed on the election to be held by secret ballot. — 7. ) Joseph Moso, John Szász and Andrew Toth are appointed tellers by the chairman. The tel­lers reported that 66 members were present. The folowing are the election results: 8. ) Ernest Palos received 44 votes, Joseph Heck 39, Stephen Danko 38, Stephen Józsa 34, John Bozo 33, and Casper Papp 33. These were declared the duly elected delegates of District 24. — William Horvath received 29 votes, Joseph Marczis 21, And­rew Azary 18, Rev. Tibor Toth 16, and Joseph Nemeth 7. These were declared alternate delegates. 9. ) Chairman called for the reading of the recommendations of the Committee of Amendments to the By-laws. Joseph Heck, Re­cording Secretary of Branch 36, rfead the recommendations which, with a few exceptions, were un­animously adopted by the meet­ing and are listed in the folow­ing: 1. ) Par. 3: the Convention. Re­presentation at the National Convention shall be limited to one delegate for every 500 mem­bers. It is deemed sufficient to have 50,000 members represent­ed by 100 delegates. 2. ) Par. 7: the text shall re­main unchanged. A roll call vote shall be ordered upon the writ­ten request of five delegates. 3. ) Par. 9: Effective with this Convention, the Association shall be divided into districts of each of which a director shall be elect­ed. Of the present organizing districts (with the exception of the California district) each shall elect a Hungarian director while every two districts shall elect a second generation American di­rector. Article 13 in this para­graph shall be amended to the effect that the chairman and re­cording secretary of the Board of Directors shall be elected from among the members of the Board. 1.) Par. 12. Article E.) shall be replaced with the following: The Supreme Organizer. Applica­tions shall be invited for this position to be filled from among the applicants by the Board of Directors. t 5.) A new article. Promotion: all branches having at lesat 1,200 members shall be made, upon re­quest, promotional districts. The Manager of each district, elected by the branch and confirmed by the Home Office, shall be ap­pointed district manager, who in­of the Distr dependent of all other organizers, shall be responsible directly to the Supreme President or the Supreme Organizer. 6. ) Par. 18: the last two lines to be amended to the effect that the appointment of employees be­longs To the jurisdiction of the Supreme President who is the head of the Home Office. 7. ) Par. 5 and 20: Instead of “15 members” at least 25 shall be re­quired. S.) Par. 39: In addition, to the $13.00 childbirth benefits the As­sociation shall also provide for the assistance of nurses wherever possible. 9. ) The recommendation of the Boarr^ of Directors that the dele­gates of the National Convention shall be paid at a flat rate, is not approved by the district which re­quests that the delegates be paid per diem fees, as heretofore. 10. ) The Verhovayak Lapja shall be published in its former size every week and it shall deal ex­clusively with matters pertaining to the Association. 11. ) The Association shall dis­continue its membership in the American Hungarian Federation which has no significance what­soever. 12. ) The district managers shall be summoned to attend the Con­vention for the discussion of pro­motional problems. 13. ) The expenditures of the meeting, totalling $57.57, were approved. 14. ) There having been no fur­ther business, chairman thanked the members for their attendance and the meeting adjourned. Signed by: JOSEPH MARCZIS, District President, STEPHEN LUKACS, District Recorder. DISTRICT 8/C PITTSBURGH, PA. The district meeting of Branch 34, Pittsburgh, Pa., was held on June 29th, 1947. The meeting was called to order by District Pre­sident Nicholas Kadar who ex­plained that the meeting was called for the purpose of elect­ing the two delegates of Branch 34 to the National Convention to be held in September. He re­quested the Rev. Paul Markovits to assume the chair and to con-V duct the elections while George Mészáros was appointed to take the minutes. The Rev. Markovits assumed the chair expressing his apprec­iation of the honor bestowed upon him. In response to his question the meeting voted in favor of holding the election by secret bal­lot. Paul Marton, Andrew Molnár and John Bishop were appointed tellers. Jphn Dernko, George Mé­száros, Nicholas Kadar and John Bishop were nominated. In re­sponse to several questions both chairman Rev. Markovits and Mr. Kadar advise the meeting that two nominees should be voted for, but a member has the privilege fo cast his vote only for one candidate. The tellers reported to the chairman who announced that George Mészáros, having receiv­ed 44, and John Dernko, having received 32 votes, had been elect­ed delegates to the National Convention, and that Nicholas Kadar, recipient of 31 votes and John Bishop, who received 23 votes, were elected alternate de­legates. ict Meetings Rev. Markovits extended his congratulations to the elected de­legates requesting them to re­present the interests of the mem­bership as well as the Associa­tion as a whole, at the National Convention. He, then, yielded the chair to the District President. Nicholas Kadar, President, stated that the discussion of the amendments to the By-laws was not scheduled for this meeting because the Committee has not yet. completed its assignment. However, they will be ready for the regular monthly meeting to be held on July 13th at which time their recommendations will be submitted to the meeting for approval. Thanking the members for their attendance the chairman closed the meeting. The recommendations of Branch 34, District 8/C, adopted at the meeting held on July 13th: 1. ) The office of the Supreme President shall be separated from that of the chairman of the Board of Directors. The Supreme Sec­retary shall not act as the Re­cording Secretary of, nor shall he be present the business to, the meeting of the Board of Direc­tors. 2. ) The Board of Directors shall have no power to increase, be­tween Conventions, their own or the Supreme Officers’ salaries. 3. ) We recommend that the Hungarian official Journal be published weekly and that the Engiish section be mailed to every member, together with the Hungarian issue. The solicitation of advertisements is recommended as a means to reduce the costs of publication. 4. ) Dividends shall be paid by the Association annually. The dividends withheld during the war also shall be paid. 5. ) The recommendation of the Board of Directors that repre­sentation at the National Con­vention be limited to one dele­gate for every 500 members is rejected by the District. The pro­visions now in force shall be re­tained. 6. ) The recommendation of the Board of Directors that delegates shall be entitled to $100, instead of per diem fees, is rejected by the District which leaves this matter to thq discretion of the delegates of the National Con­vention. 7. ) District 8/C recommends that the aged members of the Association be rendered extensive assistance. The Convention shall make provisions for a fund to be used for the purpose of aid­ing the needy and aged members of the Association. 8. ) Branches inviting the Sup­reme Oficers to their affairs shall assume their travelling expenses. 9. ) We recommend that the Chairman of the Convention shall order a roll call vote upon writ­ten request by seven delegates. 10. ) District 8/C unanimously voted in favor of the continued support of the American Hun­garian Federation by the Associa­tion. 11. ) The delegates of District 8/C were instructed to support all recommendations deemed to be to the advantage of the mem­bers and the Association. The meeting of Branch 37, Chicago, 111., representing Dis­trict 27, was held on June 21st, 1947, at 8 P.M. — The meet­ing was called to order by Pre­sident Andrew Varga. The recommendations of the Board of Directors were discus­sed and the prposed amendments to the By-laws adopted with the exception of the following: §9: there shall be no changes in the provisions pertaining to the fill­ing of the Supreme President’s seat, in the event of vacancy. To be inserted in §9: the Association shall be divided into 13 districts and a director shall be elected from each district. The American and Hungarian membership shall be proportionally represented in the Board of Directors. §10: there shall be no change in the provi­sions except the increasing of $100 to $200 as recommended by the Board of Directors. Joseph Kohaly was elected de­legate to the National Conven­tion and Michael Becze alter­nate delegate. DISTRICT 2/B TRENTON, N. J. A special meeting of the Com­mittee of Amendments of Branch 13, Trenton, N. J., representing District 2/B, was held at the Trenton Hungarian Home on^ Sat­urday, July 19th. Present were: District President Frank Radva­­nyi, Vice-President Charles Pén­tek, Frank Vereb, recording sec­retary of Branch 13, Frank Mol­nár, district recorder, László Do­bos, Andrew Jármi, John Hege­dűs and Alexander Virok. Charles Nemes, Stephen Freund, and Ni­cholas Pentek, being otherwise occupied, were absent. The meeting was called to or­der by President Radvanyi. The following actions were taken: 1.) District 2/B recommends that the office of the Supreme Presi­dent be separated from that of the chairman of the Board of Di­rectors who shall be elected from among the members of the Board. The Secretary who, attending to all official correspondence, alone is capable of properly presenting all matters of business to the Board of Directors, shall continue keeping the Minutes. A separate recording secretary shall be elect­ed. 2.) The Board of Directors and the Supreme Officers shall have no power to increase their own salaries. In the event of un­usual conditions, the Board shall submit such matters to the dele­gates of the National Convention, to be voted upon by mail. District 2/B objects to the unnecessary travels of the directors and sup­reme officers and to their action increasing their own salaries. 4.) District 2/B recommends that di­vidends be paid each and every year, said dividends to be in pro­per proportion to the ratio of the assets to the liabilities of the Association and in conformity with the provisions of the insur­ance statutes. 5.) District 2/B recommends that new branches be organized only upon request by at least 25 members and that branches having at least 50' mem­bers shall be entitled to repre­sentation at the district sessions while branches with less than 50 members shall submit their*recom­­mendations in writing to the meeting of the district to which they are assigned. The Commit­tee feels that by such action sub­stantial savings would be effect­ed enabling the Association to declare higher dividends. 6.) Dis­trict 2/B recommends that in the future no less than 400, instead of 300, members shall constitute a District eligible to representa­tion at the National Convention. 7.) It is recommended that each delegate shall receive a flat fee of $100 regardless of the dura­tion of the Convention. 8.) Dis­trict 2/B recommends that the per diem fees of the officers be set at $10 each and that 8 hours’ traveling time be considered a day, when on official mission. 9.) Members disabled for more than one week shall be uniformly entitled to receive sick benefits up to the first week. 10.) Mem­bers attaining the age of 70, who have been members in good standing for 40 years, shall be granted a 50% reduction of their dues, provided such action is per­missible under the insurance stat­(Continued on Page 4) T ■
