VOL. XXX. MAY 14, 1947 51 NO. 9 Hungarian Tag Day In Philadelphia HUNGARIAN TAG DAY IN PHILADELPHIA! These girls, most of them members of Branch 76, solicited donations for the American Hungarian Relief, Inc., on Hungarian Day, May 3rd, in Philadelphia Pa. — More than 100 ladies took part in the campaign! Merger Approved By Membership OE Workingmen's Sick Benefit Federation The approval of the prroposed merger of the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation in the 1 erhovay Insurance Association is great news which will make every Verhovayn proud of his affiliation with our organization. Fraternalists of all nationalities as well as all Americans of Hungarian descent have shown remarkable interest in the developments culminating in the referendum vote by the membership of the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation. It is, therefore, with great pleasure that we officially announce that the merger proposal had been approved by the overwhelming majority of the Federation’s membership. Considering the much complained of lack of interest in fraternal affairs, the membership of the Workingmen’s Federation is to be credited with exemplary conscientiousness and a truly remarkable participation in this vote. Of the 3,798 adult members of the Federation 2,018 had cast their votes in writing, or 53% of all members eligible to vote. The unusually high percentage of ballots cast speaks well of the interest of the Federation’s members in the affairs of their fine society. Of the 2,018 ballots cast 1,901 were in favor and 117 opposed to the merger. Of the 105 branches participating in the vote, 101 voted in approval while only 4 opposed the proposed merger. In other words, 95% of the votes cast were in favor and only 5% against the motion. The approval of the merger by such overwhelming majority of the membership certainly is a most encouraging sign for the future. Obviously, the members of the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation have great confidence in the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association and it goes without saying that the members and officers of our Association will go out of their way to prove themselves worthy of the confidence of their new fellow -members. We are confident, also that by cooperation and mutual respect our membership will succeed in winning over those members of the Federation who voted against the merger, mostly because they found it hard to tear themselves away from the consciousness of fraternal independence and self-sufficiency which has been a source of inspiration, pride and satsfaction throughout the history of their Federation. Deeply gratified by the vote of confidence of the Federation’s membership, we congratulate them upon their most unselfish and truly fraternal decision and extend our heartiest greetings to each and every member of the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation, our fellow-members-to-be in the greater Verhovay. As previously announced, the merger cannot be put into effect before the proposal has been officially approved by the Insurance Department. However, we have every assurance that the approval will be rendered shortly and, therefore, we already are taking all steps necessary for the preparation of the merger. In view of the impending National Convention, it is important that the membership of the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation be assured of proper representation. Since we have every reason to hope for the decision of the insurance department to be rendered within the next month or so, the branches of the Federation already are being assigned to the Verhovay Districts of their resp. territories. Immediately upon issuance of the approval of the Insurance Department the branches of the Federation will be notified to the effect that they are eligible to representation at the Verhovay District meetings and, through them, at the National Convention. Naturally, our branches as well as those of the Federation will be informed as to all steps to be taken as soon as the merger is approved by the authorities. Until then, all official matters of the Federation’s membership are handled as before by the Home Office of the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation. For the information of our readers we -will announce at this time that the W’orkingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation has 3,798 adult and 1,160 juvenile, or a total of 4,958 members. The assets of the Federation amount to $400,653.41 as of March 31st, 1947. Following the merger, VerhovayTs membership will rise to 61,000 and its assets will increase over eight and a half million dollars. To our way of thinking, this merger represents a great victory for fraternalism. For that we are grateful to the officers of both organizations who by unselfish cooperation and mutual understanding have succeeded in overcoming all those differences, human jealousies and ambitions that, in the past, have prevented the emergence of unity. Congratulations to all who had a share in the achievement of this splendid union which surely will benefit the memberships of both the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation and the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. Outlook Excellent For South Bend Tournament Notwithstanding the gloomy prophecies of many an anxious bowler, the Verhovay National Bowling Tournament approaches with all indications of success. Compared with participation in the previous tourneys registrations have hit an all time high which is a most encouraging sign of the increasing popularity of these events. 16 teams participated in the first Verhovay Tournament, in 1942, 21 teams in the second tourney, in 1946, but 33 teams had been entered for this year’s event. Considering that quite a number of bowlers had been barred from participation by restrictive rules, the entry of 33 teams means real progress!
