/ April 9, 1947 THE FERRET SEZfi By Mrs. Jolán Lucas “Teach us delight in simple things, and mirth that has no bitter springs.” — Rudyard Kipling. APRIL’S FOOLS’ DAY! After plenty of warnings from the daily newspapers about All Fool’s Day, old lady Ferret decided to stay within the warm and cozy confines of the Lucas domicile to escape being hoaxed by witty brats in the neighborhood. All to no avail . . . food had to be purchased, doorbells answered, and bill collectors to shoo away with a promising smile. Naturally I didn’t escape without the usual gags being pulled, but the Skipper topped the riotous list of ways to be fooled by excitingly yelling down the basement to come answer the phone as the “Treasure Hunt Radio Program” was calling us for the correct answer to some damfool question, with a cash jackpot of $320. Scrambling up 12 steps and nearly breaking my important bowling hand I 'gasped into the receiver only to be told to call a certain number within fifteen minutes and asking for Mr. Laidlow. Anxiously pacing off the necessary length of timq» I finally dialed the number and after asking for Mr. Laidlow was humorously informed that “you must have the wrong number, Lady, this is the County Morgue.” Mortified . . . and how! Before deciding to break the kid’s neck, he shoved the April Fool’s edition of the high school paper into my shaking hand with this remark, “Cool down, old girl, aren’t you the lass who is always preaching to us that the possession of a sense of humor is one of life’s greatest gifts ? Relax, and sée what the bobbysox generation thinks about this cheesy holiday.” Well, folks, talk about the originality of the modern teenage generation . . . that little old paper would have wiped the sneers from the combined faces of all the sourpusses in a 1,000 mile radius! Pictures upside down . . . misspelled words, original gags, columns tossed in any old way . . . and the write-ups! What chance have the old-timers against the stinging keenness of vitalized youth! * * * And now, can we get down to serious business? The major issue of the day among the sports element of the VFIA is the coming bowling tournament in South Bend, Indiana on May 30-31st. Personally, it’s too bad that we didn’t go into greater detail and clarification on Rule 5, part b, of the Rules and Regulations, which pertains to unattached teams. A few of us who are planning on entering these unattached teams were able to figure out that five fellows or women who bowl in various leagues, not with Verhovay teams, but others, must be ABC OR WIBC members and assumed it to be natural that such quintets who do not bowl together would naturally want to practise as a unit to 'test their strength and figure out who would bowl in which position. Since the Rules were not printed Until January 8 in the Verhovay Journal, it was much too late to enter such teams in organized leagues and the only way in which these unattached teams could bowl 29 games as independent teams would be to hold match games with other sanctioned teams. These match games were not only good practise for the newly organized quintet, but also served the purpose of advertising the Verhovay. On the other hand, according to ABC or WIBC rulings, as long as a bowler belonged to either of these organizations and had an established average, he or she was eligible to bowl in any tournament anywhere in the country. Such bowlers assumed that their established averages, plus the possession of their Verhovay certificates would be sufficient. Between you and me and the ten-pins, here’s hoping there won’t be too many disappointed Verhovay bowlers. Here’s an angle to figure out when making a rule which can, and has been, misinterpreted. Many men and women work swing shifts, or steady afternoon shifts and cannot be included in regular Verhovay teams. Another angle is that a branch can only support so many teams and with Verhovay bowlers in greater proportion than that which can be equipped by any one branch, they are forced to bowl with other teams. After all, a bowler, regardless of how good or mediocre he may be, can get signed up with teams which advertise other products ... in fact, bowling palaces are crying for bowlers to fill up leagues. Now then, if we are going to j restrict our Verhovay Bowling j Tournaments to regular Verhovay teams, unattached teams shouldn’t be allowed at all. If, on the other hand, The National Verhovay Tournament is for ALL VERHOVAY BOWLERS, such a rule as No. 5, part b, should not be included in the list of regulations. We must decide, ONCE AND FOR ALL, whether these j tournaments are for Verhovay bowlers as a whole or only those ; who bowl exclusively for our as- | sociation. From past experience, these Verhovay Tournaments create a lot of good will, excellent advertising and an entirely new idea in fraternalism and good sportsmanship. Each year more and more Verhovay teams are added to the Tournament roster, and it’s the personal belief of your Ferret that only by encouraging these unattached teams can they be convinced that bowling under the name VERHOVAY is nothing to be ashamed of. Of course, I’m sticking my necb out for the bowlers, as usual, but someone has to fight for them. The Verhovay bowlers are a swell group of members and we should be proud of them, and encourage them. * * * SCORES OF 429 WOMEN . . . Being away from the team for two weeks in the Smoky City didn’t help my lasses, and arriving home we found ourselves in second place. Knowing that only three weeks remained after last week’s games, we decided to Verhovay Journal PAGE 3 NEWS From The Field PHILADELPHIA, PA. Branch 76. BE SURE TO ATTEND THE DANCE sponsored by the Philadelphia Branch of the Verhovay, to be held at the Cultural Hall (Munkás Dalarda) 1144 N. 4th Street, Philadelphia, Pa., on April 26th, in the evening. Taking three, we found ourselves tied for first place again, and a grimmer quintet of women is hard to find. The Verhovay 500 women’s team is also in first, and I believe the branch 36 men”s No. 1 team also has that high distinction. Now if these Verhovay teams in Detroit can only finish in first place in the various leagues . . . oh boy! But let’s see the scores . r. Wednesday, March 26 . . .
